From what I've read and heard from orthodox monks and priests talking about it, it's because of the fall of man. Being separated from God, we are constantly being influenced by our environment and our personality, our ego and emotions are taking over. We cultivate desires that serve our carnal body and mind. We should always question what we feel and think, figure out where it's coming from and ask the Lord to guide us.
