When you hear the word respiration you would think it means breathing. But both the concepts are contrasting. When you breathe you inhale oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. When oxygen is being carried to different cells of your body, respiration takes place.
Respiration is when oxygen is used to breakdown glucose to generate energy. Breathing is a physical process whereas respiration is a chemical process.
There are two types of respiration. When food is broken down with the help of oxygen it is called aerobic respiration whereas when food is broken down without the help of oxygen it is called anaerobic respiration.
