No, the new owner of that tune is the Legendary Luke Kelly, who the poet Patrick Kavanagh asked to sing it to the tune of The Dawning of the Day

Well post and well spoken Riperpiper :-) Politics sucks...music not :-)

Because we love the tune. We're not interested in the politics. That's in the past, thank God. There are lots of great tunes about the Highland Clearances, the Slave Trade, etc. Should we not be playing those either? :)

As I say, I'm just a musician who appreciates a good tune. Put aside your prejudices and do the same. You'll enjoy life better.

This is really well played... a lovely tune! We're playing it in Oslo Caledonian Pipe Band as well, but we need to practice it some more. :)

Why do we Irish have to steal British tunes for our songs (and sometimes even complete songs - Will ye Go Lassie Go is but one example)? Are there no good composers left in Ireland?
Although the pipes originated in the East (they are mentioned in the Bible, Dan 3:5) and were brought to Ireland by the Scots (except the uilleann pipes - they're American) there are more pipe bands in Ireland (mostly in Northern Ireland) than there are in Scotland and Irish bands win championships more consistently

Hill Billy Your history is back to front? and Hill Billy moniker sums up your IQ. The Irish went to Scotland! Not the other way round! We bought the pipes to the jocks! Also Whiskey! The tune is Irish! Raglan Road and is a true green Irish rebel tune! Nothing to do with plastic planter paddies. Please read up before making dull witted statements. 😖

Also, Americans didn't invent or bring the the Uilleann pipes to Ireland. Union pipes were mainly played in the key of 'Bb' over 2 octaves. effectively, twice the range of notes to play. The Irish famine saw a lot of the Ullieann pipers to the gentry, migrate to America playing for money in the music Halls of NY. The difficulty was that Bb flat was to quiet for the audiences to hear, so they they adapted the instrument so they could hear, to the Key of D. Later to become known as Concert pitch 440Hz. This was a collective move, by instrument makers to make and sell more intruments Highland pipes are played in the key of C, with only one octave. Northumbriam pipes are small and ornimental because the watch makers of the East were able to skillfully apply their intricate skills to a scaled down version of what is a cross between both sets. Brittany celts are another hybrid of the pipes, more arabic because of the trade winds that brought the merchants and Spanish to Ireland. How do I know all this? because I play both the bag pipes and the Uilleann pipes. Styles of music and tunes are based on the diarlect of the region they origionate from
