  • This video shows the 3rd step in throwing after you have centered and then opened your clay. For the centering stage please see my first video: • How to Center a Hunk o... - or for the dropping and opening please see the second video: • How to Drop the Middle...
    In this video, I show the hand positioning and techniques for pulling your clay wall upward by compressing your fingertips together to thin the wall. Remember, locking your elbows and hands for a beginner are vitally important! (With experience, you can develop other techniques that work for you too!)
    This video is for my students in Ceramics I, II, and III (Wheel Throwing) at William Mason High School, in Mason, Ohio as well as anyone in the general public that just wants to learn a bit more about working with clay! If you want more specific information on the rest of the beginning stages of dropping, opening, and pulling it up, check out some of my other videos! I also have specific videos on throwing various forms!

    I am a high school ceramics teacher and potter. I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
    I started my TH-cam channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

    As a beginner, I've been struggling to build a cylinder on wheel. Thank God ! I found your videos on youtube. I saved the whole series and watched over and over again. Thank you sooo much Karen!
    Please up load more of your videos.

    Thanks for this video!! I'm going to my wheel right now to practice. I'm getting better, but not consistent. In my local studio, I was taught the outside fingers should be lower than the inside, but I find I'm losing control. I'm going to try your technique with fingers together (as if there wasn't a wall of clay between them)!

    Thanks for this video Karan. One thing I notice that you didn’t do in this video is make a cone before you pull the cylander. Is this simply your style or are there times when you make the cone? Thx.

      Kurt Euler good question! I would have made the cone in the video prior to this where I showed how to center! How to Center a Hunk of Clay

      Yeah, I'm so used to the constant motor whine of the Brent wheels. The one she's on here must have a large flywheel to carry it between the "spin it up" stages when she hits the "gas". Is rather pleasant to the ears when free spinning. Perhaps it is a kick-wheel with a motor added.

    May I ask what kind of clay do you like to throw with? The studio where I throw offers many types. Currently I am using BMix without sand. Do you prefer with or without sand? I have had some challenges and I'm not sure if it's all me or perhaps the clay. Thank you?

      Hi Zellie50!
      I use B-mix cone 5/6 with grog. I love the grogless bmix, but it isn't quite versatile enough for me. I like to throw BIG things from time to time, and I like the extra support the grog gives my clay. Also, I found that I had to glaze fire my grogless bmix SLOWLY to avoid having bloating spots. When I use the grogged bmix, I can fire quickly with no bloating! That took trial and error to get that one right! ;-) But, now I have fewer issues with the grogged!

      I agree. I use with grog for large, but prefer the feel of B-Mix w/o. I hadn't noticed the bloating, but will pay more attention. I appreciate the response and videos.

    Help can't throw a cylinder! It gets too thin near the bottom and thick on top, ugh! Watching again

      @KaransPotsAndGlass  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Too much pressure down low can throw you off! Remember, keep the wall more wedge shape until the very last pull or so. You want to have it thick enough to support the wall as you thin it so it won't get a weak spot! :) It is always thicker near the bottom until my shaping pulls, really... and the rim is the thinnest part until the end as well... then it all gets that thinner thickness. :)

    my pottery teacher basically taught me how to pull with the sponge, but i hate doing that because i dont feel like i have enough control

      Lorenzo Vonmatterhorn I didn't really understand what my pottery teacher was trying to explain to me so I used the wood tools for most of the stuff.

    How much clay did you use for this particular piece?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That was probably about 1 1/4 pound, or 1 1/2 pound. 😊

      Thank you! That helps a lot. For the past few times I've thrown I always use too much or too little amount of clay. This really helps.
      P.S. This was a beautiful cylinder you threw.
