Hey folks. I was at PDI during Shrek's production and know Jono Gibbs well. If he said there's a longer test, he definitely knows what he's talking about and is not misremembering an animatic or storyboards. Nobody who works on an animated feature would possibly make such a mistake. I've never seen this test before personally (and I really appreciate your posting it!) but the story of this test, it's style, technical approach, and deficiencies, was known throughout the company and nobody who saw it with their own eyes would mentally substitute another clip or something like that. It's simply far too different from PDI's Shrek as it existed in any stage of preproduction or production.
The fact that no stills have been found which aren't in this version is pretty compelling. It's not out of the question there's more, but I think it's safe to call found until we get some hard evidence of that
It's still technically found regardless because they didn't know about more content before it was found, it just means that there is still an extended version to be found. For a hypothetical example, say 100 years from now it would be the same thing if the Snyder cut and original were both lost media and people didn't know the Snyder cut existed until they found the original.
This video is spectacular, but (and I mean this with all the love for the community in the world) it never ceases to amuse me how much the hunt for lost media ultimately drives people to talk about the most ridiculous things with such gravity and reverence
You're so right! And I always wonder if the only reason people are so interested is because it's lost. For instance, if the Shrek animation was out on the Shrek DVD as a bonus feature would anyone care this much or is it just because it's lost? Lost media is still so fun though
@@spencerbailey208 in my opinion, of course it is! Media of any kind has an ephemeral nature, hosting websites can disappear or remove content at any moment, and physical media literally rots away. I think that if it were a bonus from a DVD it would still be remembered, I for one loved the bonus stuff from The Incredibles, it's cool seeing "alternative realities" to movies.
Could 100% see this early rendition becoming a cult classic, hidden gem type of animated movie if they continued development with this general vibe and darker tone. Like the type of movie that only becomes popular like a decade later because a large cartoon TH-camr makes a video prasing it.
i def dont think theres a longer version of it. he said in the interview that they made one test before it was canceled, as in that was all that was made
I think that if there was a 2-3 minute long test, it probably was not compiled before the project was cancelled. The stuff we are seeing was probably the “completed” part of it and the rest was still missing its set.
My guess is that there actually is more to the animation test. The main reason I say this is because the Vimeo upload follows the “I Feel Good” animation up with various facial expressions. If you ask me, while this could’ve just been sharing hard disk space with the I Feel Good test, it seems a little conspicuous that they were of both the same Shrek model and the mugger model. Thus, I think he was right about there being a 2-3 minute full test, but I feel like it was likely a behind-the-scenes look at the components that made the final animation.
There needs to be more searches into other test animations made during a film’s development. One I thought of was Iron Giant before Brad Bird got involved it was originally envisioned as a musical. A little bit of footage could be seen in the Giant’s Dream documentary.
Watching the test animation again, I'm realizing that it shares a lot of visual similarities to certain areas in the "shrek" game for the Xbox. It was made before the movie was really in production and I'm wondering now if they didn't partially use the test animation for reference. Creepy Crypt especially gives me a similar vibe to the nighttime town Shrek dances and sings in
I would say its definitely been found lol. It was amazing to finally see the animation in full. Also this video explaining everything and how it happend was awesome!! Shrek being found gives me hope. You see, I've searched for years now for a lost episode of pixar Cars toons. It's called "to protect and serve" It never aired but was entirely finished. I've tried to contact many people before but it never gets me anywhere:(( If anyone could help me that would mean the world. Happy holidays!!
@YoshiBoy of course. It's called "to protect and serve." Sheriff decides that he's going to take a holiday away. While he's gone, two other police cars take over the job in radiator springs and overdo it. Lightning gets caught speeding and as to retake his test. Ramone gets fined for low riding, and mater gets covered in tape for reasons, I'm not sure. It would've been the last episode of season 2. They released a story book before the episode was cancelled
Incredible find. It was fun watching the search for years. I think it has to be completely found. What I think Jonathon Gibbs was referring to was the longer storyboarded segment. Perhaps they were intending to animate that entire scene for the test (the storyboards match up with his timing recollection of 2-3 minutes), but after this one segment was complete is when they scraped the remaining. The rough audio was also most likely an animator using temp as well.
Considering the voice doesn't sound like ether vas and looking at the video and listening to the audio I think it's possible we have the wrong audio. Like it seems to me Shrek is supposed to be the one singing but we just have the real original song.
I could say it has been found, but I'd appreciate a higher quality version, but still, it's finally great to see this test animation complete with voice and music, really great effort!
I do not think this is the full test animation: when the worth point listing was found, he said the test was around 45 seconds long and the test animation we got was 38 seconds long. here is what I think is missing in the test: the first video of the test animation had the beginning higher up in the sky than what we got in the beginning of the 38 second version. At the end of the test animation video we found, there was sculptures making Shrek's and the Mugger's facial features and at the end of the 38 second version, the screen cut to black.
If someone made a crowd fund for a 30-45 minute "Farley-cut" Shrek short voiced by Kevin Farley & animated by the same team, I'm sure it would happen. I'd donate to see what could've been, even if it's entirely different than what we got.
"Completely found" could be debatable. I have a feeling that the animation that has been found was much longer and more dialogue heavy than the simple exchanges between Shrek and the mugger. Certainly a milestone getting this much footage though!
"Shrek!" the book was a bedtime-reading favorite of my daughter when she was little. She loved how bizarre, off-putting and completely unlike the movie it was. I had fun doing a scary ogre voice that in no way resembled Mike Myers.
The type of computer you needed to make this in 1995 would of been jaw dropping back then, huge respect to the animators for the work, and honestly this doesn't seem that weird and creepy, it looks more dark but funny. would of been interesting to watch for sure
I wouldn't be surprised if the original animation was 2-3 minutes long, but I feel like at this point it's unlikely we'll find more of it. I'd be delighted to be wrong, though!
Even if this is the entire test animation, we should probably continue searching for a higher quality version as we know from some stills that there has to be a higher res recording, i still hope we see more of farleys voice lines
The 3d model kind of sucks, but the hand drawn art of him in this style looks really good? I feel like if they had done an animated version with this look using the art like the concepts showed, it would have had a really unique style and been something amazing.
Honestly, I feel like the reactions to the test at the time were overexaggerated as to me it looked quite fine for the 90's. Yeah, he's ugly, but he's an ogre, what'd you expect? And there's now ways to make characters that're ugly in a cool way, so I think a book-accurate Shrek reboot done in the style of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem could be something special.
You should cover some Lostwave topics some time! There's been a crazy number of finds these past few weeks, and plenty of other interesting searches still going on too
i would say. it is "partially" found. And maybe you guys will say "Why you say that?", and is because is in low quality and not on it's high quality. It looks like it was extracted from a VHS with the quality it has. Is still something that we finally see the full test animation, but we still don't get the hq version with better audio and better image quality, but again, is still something.
I don’t understand why these animators didn’t simply just uploaded the test animation titled "Early Shrek Test Animation" so fans could have found it earlier, but maybe the animators were ashamed of their work on this version of Shrek, or probably because they didn’t want to be reminded about the work they had done that was eventually cancelled. If the test animation was hidden under our noses for all these years than maybe there still could be more that hasn’t been discovered yet
The thing to note is that they were mainly apart of their own reels and it could have only been the footage of the test animation they personally helped produce, so they wouldn't have access to the full complete thing.

didn't realize until now that I actually read the childrens book Shrek as a kid... I vividly remember all of the pictures
There’s a universe where we got a darker, source-faithful version of this movie that was really wild and interesting, but that’s also a universe where the movie failed.
Barry Jackson was in Los Angeles pre production and the people looking for names just flew right past him and now he’s the one to reveal the test what a storytelling
While it is a big moment I can say with out a doubt its not completely found... or well there is another piece that goes to the animation (another scene) if memory serves me well.
15:28 Its also possible that Someone who was there is going to know more about it than a random person who just searches for things & when they can't find it, assumes it doesn't exist because apparently all those people are that good, but really they are just scowering websites. I know whos word id take.
Nobody will see this as I'm late as hell to this, but my theory is that while we have the actual footage, the original audio is still lost. I think Barry Jackson had to recreate the audio as on a Worthpoint listing it's stated that the audio was completely removed from all copies of the tape after Farley's death. You can tell because near the beginning of the video, the saxophone solo of I Feel Good repeats the same note twice, suggesting that he took the song and edited it into the video. Another reason is that Shrek is never heard singing the song, and is just lip-syncing to it due to Farley's audio being removed. You can also hear mouse clicking in the background and the audio quality is very poor, suggesting that Barry simply voiced over the missing lines himself. And while the video itself is found, it would be nice to find a copy that is in good quality even if we never find the authentic audio, as the screenshots prove somebody has a HD copy of the test. Nobody will probably see this but this is just my thoughts that I wanted to get out. 🙂

I love the background and the medical village. It has this dark and Lonely atmosphere that I would have loved to see more of.

Must have good healthcare, though.
