Idk I think there’s a difference between idol and celebrity. Like I’ll listen to anything Taylor Swift puts out but that’s not so I can get her streaming numbers up, it’s because I think she makes good music. Personally I feel the same about Yunjin. There’s no way she’s be able to single handedly end parasocial relationships, but she’s using her platform to advocate for things that matter and her musics good. I think I forgot where I was going with this

The people who compare idols and compete over whose bias does a better job of “changing the industry” are missing the point. We need MORE diverse idols with deeper narratives in their art to change societal perceptions of what should be expected from idols. We need public pressure on entertainment companies to stop treating idols as commodities and to give them the rights they are owed as workers and, more importantly, as humans. We’re not supposed to hope our faves get to monopolize the “not like other idols” image. That’s ridiculous and defeating the point of what idols like Yunjin and Soyeon are trying to do in the first place.

Late reply but I dont think "putting pressure on companies" would work as much as really supporting idols and groups who represent better, fair and mindful messages. We can prove it through success so companies can realize thats the better more profitable path to follow. Think about it, it took BTS to drive the "love yourself" narrative for the trend of groups suddenly talking about loving yourself more in the music. They werent the only ones to do that but it really drove the point in that we like as much flashiness as much as realness.

Yunjin can do actually nothing to change the industry, she can just convey a message through her song as she is an artist an influential person , but if her fans don’t understand what message she is giving and doesn’t try to reflect on it nothing will happen
At the end , fans need to change , fans need to first of all love songs not idols, we came here for music , but now it seems , kpop fans are not here for music but just to obsess over people they don’t know , we love idols and singers cause we love their songs , we don’t love songs because we love the idols , it will be fucked up that way

What ever these idols say people won't take them seriously and think that their just being problematic, quirky, trying to act different from other idols but they are simply just trying to spread a message.

the way yunjins message completely went over peoples heads this song isn’t going to simply change the industry unless kpop stans participating in such behaviour like bashing and judging female idols unprovoked reflect on if what they are doing is worth it .
yunjin didn’t just release these songs to have a quirky “not like other girls“ moment but to show how idols aren’t these perfect mannequins on display for you to pick apart. when I listened to i≠doll I immediately thought of wonyoung and the way she went from loved during her time in both produce 48 and iz*one to being hated for literally no reason now . some of you completely disregard the message being emphasised here .

i think y’all are just overanalyzing her statement. she claimed she wanted to “change the idol industry”, not flip it all around. idk where “parasocial relationships” came from, but she’s not responsible for changing things like that. it’s pretty obvious she’s trying to set a new MINDSET and be vocal about it (since a lot of idols do think similarly but don’t share it). change can be small. it does NOT have to be a dramatic change to be considered making a difference.

Thats literally what he was saying, hes not saying that yunjin is resposible for changing that, and about the whole mindset thing, that literally the exact same thing hes saying like i dont think you understand what he is say. He is saying that yunjin is trying to spread a massage to us fans and she needs us to help her in spreading it but i think people think that when she said that she "wants to change the idol industry" they (people) thought that she was gonna yk physically change the idol industry as in do some thing physical about it i rather than just writing a song about it. but the whole point of the song is so spread the massage because one of the biggest problems is the fans and how they want the idols to be and look and behave etc. so hes not saying that she wants to flip the whole thing around. and this whole thing is not even nesessarily about yunjin its about the fans focusing more on her persona than the massage shes actually trying to spread. She doesn't call out her fans when they either do creepy shit or attack other idols for no good reason and she's in a group with a 16 year old, she's not changing sh!t, idols like Hwasa and Soyeon have actually been changing the industry by going against the norms of the industry, like beauty standards, attitude, and groups concept and/or sound, yet somehow a basic idol from the big 4 makes a song about the idol life and gets credited as "the idol that's changing the industry", and y'all still say that big 4 privilege doesn't exist?? Overall I agree with this video, as an Idle stan I was disappointed that people turned Yunjin and Soyeons contributions to these types of messages into a competition rather than actually spreading the messages presented by both women in their music. it became a who did it better.
Kinda disagree with the para-social relationship bit, I don't think para-social relationship as a concept is the problem. the problem is the type of person who is involved in it. If you are a well rounded individual with good values then it will be reflected in your relationships whether in real life or on the para social front, my take is oversimplified hence i recommend Elliot Sang (another you tuber) who has a much better in depth explanation of this phenomenon. Video is called 'Bo Burnham vs Para social relationships'. His thesis on the topic is one i agree with the most. The complete eradication of para-social relationships is not a reasonable solution imo. but rather an education on boundaries.

Agreed. I also think Soyeon and Yunjin are doing two different things, with their messaging. Both fighting for others, and new voices. But Soyeons messages are about fighting for women, in and out of the industry. Yunjin is fighting for all idols, and pointing out hatred and treatment they receive. Tomboy, a song about women defying standards, and being free. Nxde, a song against the sexualization of women. Lion, a song that is literally about women empowerment, comparing women to lions. Oh my god is somewhat of the outlier. It’s message is saying, love all, and every form of human is and should be loved. Yunjin, she writes differently. She points out more specific issues, and sticks with them. Self love, and treatment of idols. She talks about how idols are mistreated, and seen as disposable machines. How idols shouldn’t be pressured to look a certain way, do certain things, etc. both of these women also fight for their beliefs outside of their music. Although, both are fighters. Both are making an impact, and both are advocates. Their messages are different. There is zero heed to compare, they’re both fighting things we should all want. Both are doing what they love, and making a difference.

What Yunjin is really TRYING to do is tell US to help her change the industry along with her, she's telling us to "STOP" these things as it only leads to self hate. As she has wrote in I≠DOLL in an "idol's POV", she points out how idols get hate for the littlest of things they do (for example "oh, they are such a pick me" or "omg their stage presence is so bad") She's not changing THE IDOL INDUSTRY but SHE'S TELLING EVERYONE, FROM COMPANIES, TO FANS, TO ANTIS, TO CHANGE WHAT THEY SAY AND POINT OUT! Continuing that in Love You Twice its in the POV of fans comparing themselves to idols, as if the fans want to be like their idols just like she says "Cause deep inside I wanna be her", meaning the fan wants to be all perfect and everything but what the fan DOESN'T see is that even idols may even be the going through hard times "behind the screen". One huge thing I noticed in Love You Twice is that the "fan" compares even the smallest things to her "idol" for example lighter and clear skin, dieting, working out consistently and even having nice clothes. So if ONLY ALL PEOPLE (ANTIS AND FANS INCLUDED) LEARN TO BE RESPECTFUL, maybe and JUST maybe something might change in this industry, but of course that is NEVER going to happen soon until people really start understanding and spread her message properly without just saying "SHES CHANGING THE IDOL INDUSTRY!"
i just wrote an essay help

I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Yunjin, I don't really care for her and le sserafim but I respect what she's doing. She's trying her best but even so I don't see it being very successful. Without the parasocial relationships, the kpop industry falls apart completely. And no matter how many idols speak out against it companies will never change, they never have because it won't be bringing in the bucks. Yunjin's own fans have terrible parasocial relationships with her, asking them to focus on what she's trying to say and spread her message? That requires them to break down their walls first. The kpop industry thrives on what she's trying to fight, and I think that as long as she's a part of it she'll become one of the people encouragingly these parasocial relationships, she already is by flirting with her fans and trying to make it seem like fearnots and lesserafim are friends. Until this method of manipulation used by companies stops bringing in money (which it won't) they won't change. It's sad

That’s the thing. They know how effortlessly she fits into the idol image. There’s nothing reasonable to criticize her on. When you’re deemed as perfect, people are more adamant on pinpointing your imperfections.
So when people hate on her for the things you listed, it’s not because they want her to be more perfect. It’s because she essentially is what the “perfect idol” is. And that puts her on a pedestal. To be put on a pedestal means that the slightest contrast to someone’s image of you will cause an emotional outbreak.
In my opinion, I think people hate on her for the “problematic” things she does because they’re trying to prove to themselves & others that she’s not perfect. And I’m not saying she’s perfect. That’s a horrible way to describe someone. That’s just the word people use when praising or insulting her.
When you’re “too perfect” it forces people to acknowledge how much they lack in themselves. That’s why so many people take everything Wonyoung does or says personally.

The bad, try hard, pick me attitude, bowing bs, etc etc. are all exaggerated to not end; just some stances they use as a cover up for why they actually hate her

banger video. i’d like to add that i think yunjin gets additional leniency from HYBE because she is gyopo. Koreans are less harsh and have less “perfect” expectations for idols from America and they talk more openly about their experiences - Jessi is an example. Le Sserafim also as a group has a concept of being a bold and fearless group of girls. So I think Yunjin was very lucky to be in a group concept that allows her to express herself. If she was native Korean in a group like WJSN or Red Velvet this wouldn’t have happened.

not lucky is talent. one of the deal with hybe was she can be herself and do her own music. do u think if she can't write, sing, compose, draw her own mv and produce song, hybe will take her in since she already back to US for almost 2 years not being a trainee? and these songs aren't solo because it was not promoted. u mean korean idols is all fake personalities since they not allow to express?

Im so shocked that some people actually GET THIS u know?? I thought Im the only one who feel something is off with this whole thing. Thank you for sharing your opinion!! I agree with everything u said.
When the first time I saw I≠Doll, I already know abt yunjin's 'ambition' to change the industry, and I LOVE the lyrics and the passion I feel throughout the song. Its clear that SHE CARE a lot abt the massages in it, and I was curious to know what her fans and kpopies think abt it. And u know whatt UR RIGHT, only handfull of ppl on twt actually get the song and care enough to help spread the massages but her FANS.. dude most of them was so proud about her DOING SOMTHNG to change the industry that they forgot to embrace the massage and be the kind of people yunjin hopes them to be.
But I think thats also on the company though. They fail to make the song impact full enough for the intentions n massage to be heard more than her persona. But then again why would they do that? They dont want the industry to change, they dont NEED the idol industry to change. So basically I have no idea what will comes for the future for yunjin. I personally like her, I hope she doesnt get discouraged by all this mess and continue to spread the massage in her own way.

i think her approach on wanting to change the idol industry is that she wants to change the restrictions one has when becoming an idol.. so intentionally she wants to have the freedom as an idol to do whatever she likes and to say whatever she likes, without getting criticized left and right. and her music shows this clearly. in my eyes she has already made changes to the industry, because she uses her music as a platform to freely discuss certain experiences (hardships in life) that she has gone through, and that many can relate to. her music sends an important and powerful message, sure not everyone will understand it, and some may hate, but i think we need to credit her more on her bravery and courage to do this.

No one's criticizing any *one,* the song doesn't even imply criticization unless you are among the toxic fans that harm and control idols because of your extreme parasocial relationship. It simply sheds light on the harm parasocial relationships does. It's a sinking ship on both ends.

She's still a product that's profiting off of this industry, working to earn money for a huge capitalistic company doing whatever her company allows her to do. She's not changing anything. She's still contributing to the problem and using the problem as material/content to further her career/image.
Instead of just singing about it, why doesn't she speak out for and defend Wonyoung and all those idols being unfairly hated on in her social media? Or post message that criticize certain people/power in the industry and directly ask her fans to do so? Singing her little songs won't change anything, because she's not really practicing what she preaches.
At the end of the day, this is just one of Hybe's clever marketing of their artist.

She now has the power to influence people and actually do something, but I don't see her doing anything other than singing her little songs. As long as she hasn't done anything concrete and substantial in her widely marketed aim of "changing the industry," you can't blame people for thinking it's all just a gimmick for her career. No one else is actually benefiting from her actions other than herself, her group, and her company, earning money and getting more popularity from all these.

She has changed the industry in her own little way. These songs have great messages and if she changed the way even 1 fan or 1 hater thinks of her and her band members, she did change the industry. Is it the massive OVERHAUL you and other may want or expect, no, but it's something. Young trainees may be watching her and think, I wanna be the villain if needed, I wanna play guitar, I wanna differentiate myself by studying opera or an instrument. Who knows. Whatever it is. Her existing and being herself is the change🤷🏽‍♂️ It's not that deep. I have the wherewithal to know that she is not going to single-handedly deconstruct everything wrong with KPOP, but she does indeed make an admirable contribution, persona or not. No one sits around thinking she is in her room thinking about how she is going fully redefine the landscape of Kpop...no. That is nuts. But the fact that she tries and she makes it apart of who she is and brings all of her worldly experiences to the table is a nice start. Let's not be super critical of these young woman. We don't need to analyze everything they say until it barely even exists. There is no "problem" with her as you expressed in that click bait title. I think Le SSERAFIM are definitely bringing something different to the table in general and the fight for change ain't over yet, so maybe we keep supporting them in the changes they hope to achieve little by little. Rome was not built in a day or whatever the 14 months give or take they have been a band. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Just saying. Maybe we as consumers set out expectation way too high for these young ladies. They are young. Yes they wanna be taken seriously but they are also in their teens and 20s. They are working hard and also trying to have fun. Let's just enjoy the music. Support those songs with great messages. Stream them. Let's help her make that change. She can and will not do it alone.

I think what she meant was that the majority of people see the idols in the Kpop industry as pretty, decorative “dolls”, inorganically put together by companies in order to gain fame and money, incapable of making any things of their own. I guess the message she and Hype are trying to make is that they’re creating a new generation of idols who are more “outspoken” in a way, and posses real musicality like true artists, rather than just some pretty girls who got picked from an idol factory show. Although she’s not the first idol to compose songs, I think it’s still inspiring for others to see a young girl being so talented and her messages definitely bring attention to her cause.

True. I don’t really put the “changing idol industry” with only yunjin on the pedestal. Kpop stans know many artists who break the standard idol norm in terms of beauty or how they should behave etc etc. but it’s a good thing to have a new gen idol with this mindset. When we say change...no one can ever change other ppl so toxic fans and hate will never be in anyone’s control. What she can start with is idols. The most she can do is be herself and prove that and that’s how she can be an example to other Idols....idols who may hold themselves back, who are sensitive to comments, who are influenced by what fans or the company say about them. Everyone is different so every idol will take their experiences differently. I do believe yunjin is a strong minded person so it’s good to have her around the circle. Smaller company’s may place control on their idols and not receive certain freedoms but you never know if it gives them the courage to speak up one day. Kpop industry is very different from western artists for sure and I feel like fandoms are even more stronger here but sadly I feel like the idol standard for perfection isn’t the only thing forced by companies but also by fans themselves...to the point of looking at every detail. It’s almost scary how idols get cancelled left and right. I think the rise of social media as good as it helps in many things it really kills a lot of things too.

This is why I love Yunjin, she's really talking about things so many people are so worried to talk about even though everyone knows those things happen and are painful. She also was capable to deliver her message in a better way thanks to her vocal skills (interpretation quality), but not only that, she also was capable to talk about their own insecurities as idols, also her insecurities as a human being and trying to deliver the message that idols ARE HUMAN BEINGS too. People need to stop thinking they're perfect or they have to be perfect or they have to be the best example for everyone, they are human beings with their insecurities, flaws, virtues, way of thinking, vision of life, preferences, etc. I hate when people start hating an idol just because they don't like him/her when in real life, when you don't like someone, you just don't stay around that person and that's it, it doesn't change your daily life. Just support someone when you like what he's doing and don't listen if you don't like it. The only thing to spread if you wanna spread something, it's love and support, sharing with people that idol / group that you like, accepting there will be people that won't like it, keep your mind opened.

i dont know how to fight it myself cause in the end its just everything i have just this parasocial relationship with the idols and i dont have anything else
thats the biggest problem that is hard to change and it will take enourmous amount of strength and time to get rid of
idk what needs to happen to change that like the whole new generation of companies and idols and fans who really want to change that but cause companies have profit of all that i dont think it will change untill fans stop massively donating in it

Yunjin can't change the industry, but with that said she can influence those who have that power, by putting light onto sensitive subjects that are put in the dark, people can see those things and start to talk about them and eventually the more people talk the more people who can do something about it will hear, and if they decide to do something about it then yunjin has done what she said she'd do, all she had to do was start the talking of it, that's how everything changes. We don't just sit around and think about changing things, we mention it, and someone hears it then thinks on it, agrees with us (or disagrees that happens too) and then passes it on, and it keeps going until a large number of people communitively agree or disagree. Someone with the power to change something may be in that crowd and eventually something may change, the first step is always realization that something is wrong, or something can be changed, then you talk about it, and that's exactly what yunjin is doing, but her efforts will only work if we listen

Hwasa is the same in this sense, though more so for freedom of expression and shattering the korean beauty standards. and it took hwasa many years to reach that point, you cant expect Yunjin to "change" the industry in a powerful and obvious way within less than a year of her debut - you need to give her time to develop her skillset, gain popularity and build connections in the industry in order for that to happen.

    Tldr of these comments:
Yunjin is an idol, and even if hybe allowed her quote of 'I want to change the idol industry' into her introduction video, just by talking about a want to change could inspire and cause the change. The fans consuming the music do have to take charge and boycott and resist to change the industry. The idols have to be supportive of these changes and, if they want to, adapt to it. The companies have to listen to its consumers. Everything is based upon the fans.

I feel like when Yunjin said she wanted to change the kpop industry, she doesent mean her specifically changing the kpop industry..Her main idea is sending us songs like Doll so we can realize the problem with us fans and change the kpop industry ourselves. Cuz lets be honest, no idol can change the kpop industry because there not the once causing scandals, accusations, bodyshame, disrespect and fanwars.. Its us fans who are causing these which means its only us who can stop them. Yunjin made us fans realize from her song the amount of scandals we cause can seriously affect a kpop idols career and its OUR job to stop them from happening.

what bothers me is also the fact that even when people DO listen to the song, they do not focus on the lyrics but instead only focus on the fact that yunjin's the one who wrote it which completely goes against what she's trying to convey. i mean, in i≠doll, she clearly says something along the lines of "i'm not just a pretty face, i want my voice to be heard and to be treated like a human" yet people misregard what she tries to say which is a shame.
i wonder, if she didn't say that her pre-debut video, would the impacts of her songs be any different?

if no one has the mindset of wanting change then nothing is going to change. It's not about how realistic her dream is. They also used to say human can't fly and then someone invented planes and paragliders...

Like the message in OMG from Newjeans, kpop fans make kpop idols crazy with impossible expectations to meet and the kpop industry won't change because the main problem are kpop fans who won't change

2:10 ok, but I also think it comes from the different cultures. Like she has lived in the states and Korea long enough to know the toxicity of the industry and wants to change it. She wants her juniors not to be criticised for weight gain or their visual. She wants the to create music and perform. The real reason why people become idols. I might be wrong but it's my opinion.

It's not impossible. The kpop industry is slowly changing, not because of Yunjin, but it's definitely changing

It just makes me so sad that people like this completly chalge the whole message. Yunjin is just tryna change the industry and she is right. The industry is too toxic anyways, she just wants all the idols to be able to speak out and you can clearly hear it in her songs. People like you just change everything to bring her down or smth. Just stop please, we finally got an idol that speaks out. Let's support yunjin

one individual wont change the industry but a community might not too it may be hard but trends die so maybe their standards may change one day
