The noise you hear from sebulbas engines sounds like a piston compressor for a scuba tank and a low compression pump at the same time. Could be for the fuel, holding the fuel tanks at 4500psi would make sense for the unfamiliar fuel tanks. Like precompressed diesel.
podracers could use a different heat source than fuel for the jets too. given the power of the reactors in setting if they were producing heat instead of electrical power, running the compressed air through that instead of a combustion chamber would run a jet engine just as well.
Your videos are very well made, edited and narrated! Really enjoying this channel. You even kinda sound like a classic star wars uk actor from the first movie, would make a great imperial officer

Not mentioned here RE: Ratts Tyrell is that his whole family was in attendance at the Boonta race; in fact, his wife had just gotten out of the hospital after having a baby. First of all I really enjoy your content. regarding that turbine cable scene: I was so sure I haven't seen this before when I saw it a few years ago and I watched the official VHS release of this at least 20 times when I was young. I think the versions released for streaming could be viewed as an extended cut.
I love how everyone who played this game has a love for one or other of the racers, and how strong and diverse those preferences are. Of course, Ebe E Endecott is obviously the best, but still...
He was able to grab the cable because of his latent and untrained but enormous Jedi abilities and reflexes. He wouldn't have even been able to race if he didn't have such extraordinary powers.
@42:48 I had the "Action Fleet" Gasgano's Pod Racer toy when I was but a wee encumbrance on my parents, and it used to make a most wonderful growl and a definitely safe to breathe smoke/smell effect when one 'revved' the Pod by the launch device.

Would have been fantastic to have the “crashing into a stalagmite” shot superimposed over the SPV’s video screen. I look forward to the 12 hour supercut podracing omnibus where this will be implemented. Excellent video as always!
Dude so.. most of my life, I've been obsessed with speeding. Most of my family was. As a kid I would rewatch the podracing scene over and over and over lol. I've mellowed out a bit now, but I gotta let it out sometimes. At the height of it, I used go on weekly speed runs in the middle of the night. It was like busting a nut. Oh and I played the n64 game a shit ton
The game's stats are misleading: there's a few critically important stats that are entirely missing from the stats screen for the racers: prominently heating rate and boost velocity. Heating rate is how quickly the engines start overheating as you boost, and boost velocity is how much actual speed you gain from boosting. Conceptionally, some of the terrible stats some racers have (Elan in particular) is offset by these stats: Elan's boost is actually far above average in speed, making him one of the faster racers you can play to start with. This is also why ben is the best racer including upgrades: because he has the highest boost velocity and a good heat rate to compliment.
We didn't know about that until two months ago! One of the prominent members of our discord community is a big fan of podracing, and he overturned the knowledge we'd taken for granted over the past twenty years. He managed to find Neva Kee in several different scenes, both before and during the race. I doubted a few of them at first, but he recreated a single frame of the starting grid in a 3D program, and proved this could only be Neva Kee peeks in from the edge of the screen. Incredible stuff, I was blown away by this revelation. We'll have an updated version of this video out shortly, in a compilation with the rest of the TPM series. -DZ
Thank you, thumbnails are often the part we're least sure about. Most of the feedback is about the video itself, which is of course a good thing. Still, it's nice to hear which thumbnails are the most well-liked. -DZ
There was an extended version of episode 1 on tape, I forget what all was added but I'm pretty sure the podrace was made like 10 minutes longer. What you saw on TV that didn't have anakin catching the control cable, was probably the theatrical version (or just edited for time) and then you had the extended version on VHS
15:56 - So basically, this shot was reordered. In a Deleted scene, i assume BEFORE Ody Mandrells Pit Accident, Ark "Bumpy" Roose went and pitted, if you watch the Food Salesman scene, you can see his pod fly by at a very much slower pace. That scene was then removed and reordered to be right after Ody Mandrells pit accident.
Gotta appreciate this video so much. Enjoyed the realistic engine analysis of each podracer. Boles Roor was my favourite pilot and I liked his vehicle design the most in Racer. Especially the cockpit of his pod was cool and stood out as being the longest in lenght. Fully upgraded his pod could rival the speed of Quadrinaros, at least in the Dreamcast version. I've noticed that the N64 had subtle differences in gameplay here and there. It makes me glad how much TPM gets love on your channel, it has always been my favourite Star Wars film despite popular opinions. Are you gonna make a continuation video for the additional game only pilots from Racer and Racer Revenge?
I had this on N64 as a kid, i did totally play a lot of anakin but sometimes i hopped around when i did 2 player split screen. I think the only reason i really remember neva kee, or rather the pod, even though it wasn't seen in the movie, is because it's so different from all the others. Also i always liked dud bolt just for the design and name, nothing more.
I've always described pod racing as "chariot races with jet engines instead of horses." Now I think I'll revise that statement to "The coolest parts of every kind of racing rolled into one." Idea for why Dud bolt and Aldar Beedo's engines have the sloping fronts and small intakes: Downforce. If these engines are getting enough air for their needs already, the slopes could have been added to force the engines down and give more control, similar to/reminiscent of how the wings on formula one cars use the front and back wings to get more grip.
12:35 In the book they explain how it works. Jet engines have spinning parts so they have centrifical force. On a plane usually you have 2 engines spinning in opposite direction to cancel out this effect though on single engine fighters this is something you have to account for. The engines on the pod aren't attached to anything and actually rely on the centrifical force to hold them in place. They are perpetually trying to pull apart with the energy beam binding them together.
1) You seem to have put a lot more thought in how podracers work than anyone who was involved in making the movie. I bet those people were like "magic space technology go brrrrrr!" 2) I remember reading somewhere, on some canon source back in the day, that the podracers that have big turbine fans in the front use jet engine, while those that have no fans, use rocket engines. 3) You left out some of the game exclusive podracers, I think Bozzie Baranta, Fud Sang and the secret characters Jin Reeso and Cy Yunga have some of the best looking and most interesting podracers. 4) Aldar Beedos podracers is my favorite to use ingame. I usually beat the whole game with anakins stock podracer, then after I've beaten all maps, I buy the upgrades. After that they no longer take damage between the races, so I can keep my podracers upgraded forever and replay any level I like. Also, that salute by aldar beedo is just, eh, suspicious xD

The VHS of Phantom Menace that I owned had that shorter Podrace sequence edit that you spoke of. I can't remember if anything else about the movie was changed, but the podrace was noticeable. To be honest though, I preferred the shorter cut. To this day, it's still jarring to see the additions to the scene in the Bluray version. Not only are they more cartoony in logic and throw off the pacing a little, but they also suffer in terms of the character animations and textures. Maybe due to the fact they weren't used in the original theatrical/VHS cut and so weren't priority... I could just be forever used to the original version I grew up with, though!
Interesting, good to have that confirmation! I definitely prefer the original versions of any Star Wars movie that had been later changed. For TPM in particular, I loved Yoda being a puppet instead of the later CGI versions. -DZ

I'm surprised Sebulba didn't have high traction and acceleration, to mimic the ramming. His stats seem more what I'd expect from Anakin, get up to speed and don't mess up
I watched the whole video. I did play the old podracing game as at least my area it was a popular option to set up a gaming console in your business with the podracing game for the kids to play. I believe they could make a new game that would be more successful than the original if they added elements similar to Mario Kart in particular the ability to do dastardly things to the people you are racing against where in the old podracing game the focus was on racing itself.
I wonder if his force abilities also played a role in his mechanical aptitude. One of the things about the force is that it gives those gifted with it more awareness of the entire world, which could possibly extend to non-biological objects such as pod-racers or droids.

Announcer Head Two: "Normally he's racing with his signature dual C7 Aerospace, J-X4 Whiplash engines. But today-"
Announcer Head One: "What even IS that monstrosity?"
Announcer Head Two: "Wait, I have notes. I have notes. That is the... Rockomax Conglomerate BACC4, 'QUAD-THUMPER'."
Announcer Heat One: "You mean the Quad JUMPER, right?"
Announcer Head Two: "No, it says it right here. Quad, Thumper. Apparently four solid fuel engines bolted together by... Struts?"
Announcer Head One: "He's going to race what amounts to solid rocket boosters held together by PIPES?!"
Announcer Head Two: "He's certainly going to try."
Announcer Head One: "How'd he get that past the race safety officials?"
Announcer Head Two: "We have safety officials?"
Announcer Head One: "Oh, good point. Oh and it looks like he's giving his engines a test fire..."
*_Jeb lights the boosters, they predictabily do what Solid Rocket Boosters do best... Immediately go to FULL POWER and cannot be shut off. Jeb's 'Pod-racer' immediately leaves the starting line_*
Announcer Head One: "OH! A false start from Jeb! That's going to disqualify him if he doesn't get back to his positio-"
*_The Struts of course fail seconds into flight, the whole assembly finds the nearest desert rock to explode spectacularly against, at least one booster spirals into the sky Quadinaros-style._*
Announcer Head One: "That, looked, painful."
Announcer Head Two: "Would you believe he tends to survive that?"
Announcer Head One: "I'll believe anything about those little guys at this point. Anyway, the next racer is..."
The podracing scene was indeed quite an highpoint in the movie. Just the finale, but something fast with action that isn't just people shooting or punching each other.
It also introduces a type of fictional sports, which is always great to expand the lore and make the place feel more real.
The amount of humble pie Sebulba must have eaten to walk over to Ani and Qui-gon, and ask to buy the pod.
One thing I do want to point out temto was raising clean until a bug flew into his visor. That's why he unintentionally rammed into Anakin
Now this is pod racing 🎉
1:07 bro really did the full:
*Fade in "Fuel" by Metallica*
"NBC Sports welcomes you to the NASCAR Winston Cup Season Finale. Its the New Hampshire 300 presented by the new movie 'Behind Enemy Lines.'
Its a beautiful late November day in Loudon, sunny skies, temperatures climbing towards 50 degrees. This race was originally scheduled for mid September, but was postponed because of the terrorist attacks on September 11th.
Hi everyone, I'm Bill Webber, welcome to Loudon, and on behalf of everyone at NBC Sports we hope you are enjoying the Thanksgiving Weekend. This field was set by the points standings as of September 16th. Some things have changed since then, others have not.
One thing that has not changed, Jeff Gordon. He was number one in points then, and he's number one in points now. One thing that is a little different, he's now a 4 time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion.."
*Metallica fades out*
The Use of 8 Bit Fuel In the intro is so perfect, reminds me of NASCAR on NBC in the early 2000's. Best Times
Amazing video! I love this game! I wish you talked about the last few racers. I always play as Bullseye Naviour because of his exceptional stats
who remembers those booths where you could use podracer controls to play this? that was my favorite arcade game as a kid played a lot of gasgano.
The Chuck E. Cheese I went to as a kid had one. It was a lot of fun.
me
There was one at my local arcade and I loved that game
Neva Kee was always my favorite guy. hearing all the pod sounds takes me right back to 1999 :)
The noise you hear from sebulbas engines sounds like a piston compressor for a scuba tank and a low compression pump at the same time. Could be for the fuel, holding the fuel tanks at 4500psi would make sense for the unfamiliar fuel tanks. Like precompressed diesel.
This should have way more views than it does. Very detailed and we'll done!
podracers could use a different heat source than fuel for the jets too. given the power of the reactors in setting if they were producing heat instead of electrical power, running the compressed air through that instead of a combustion chamber would run a jet engine just as well.
Mars Guo was my guy, every play through. That pod is OP 🔥
I'm still blown away that some people think the podracing in Phantom is boring
Ah my daily dose of quality content
Your videos are very well made, edited and narrated! Really enjoying this channel. You even kinda sound like a classic star wars uk actor from the first movie, would make a great imperial officer
We really appreciate you saying that. There's a lot that goes into the sound quality, references, and editing.
Also, I have to agree: I'd love to be an officer! I have faith the Imperial Navy will get around to processing my application forms any year now. -DZ
This is the kind of well-research, ultra-nerdy video I want to watch!
"a collection of parts flying in formation" lmao
I didn't love podracing in tpm but I LOVED the arcade game of podracing. It was like those motorcycle ones but with a full pod racer. So much fun.
Fun Fact: the pit droid that got sucked into Ody Mandrell's engine was named DUM-4
The 8 bit Metallica Fuel midi was a legendary choice, sir.
Teemto is my favorite, too! I love the enclosed cockpit.
Was that a 8-bit version of "Fuel?" Amazing
Absolutely! You got it. It seems the most appropriate choice. -ED-1TA
Bread Circus confirmed based
Ground Control to Major Tom. It's time to take your breadpills and put your helmet on. -DZ
Not mentioned here RE: Ratts Tyrell is that his whole family was in attendance at the Boonta race; in fact, his wife had just gotten out of the hospital after having a baby. After that race, his widow founded the Ratts Tyrell Foundation, which worked to have podracing banned as a bloodsport. Sadly, whatever reception such a goal had eventually became a moot point when the Empire banned most of the Outer Rim's moat popular forms of sport.
Now THIS is starfighting!
You might want to do a part 2 covering the game-exclusive characters. There's actually quite a few.
He was able to grab the cable because of his latent and untrained but enormous Jedi abilities and reflexes. He wouldn't have even been able to race if he didn't have such extraordinary powers.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow, easy way to remember how jet engines work 😂anyways, Holdfast and Beedo are my favorites, awesome video!
"Nucknog from the planet Sump" has such powerful insult potential, especially if you say it with a British accent
OMG I thought I was the only one who noticed 15:56 with Ody appearing after he was DNF xD
In the uncut Gleg holdfast gets wrecked by Sebulba, but then appears with Anakin right after
@42:48 I had the "Action Fleet" Gasgano's Pod Racer toy when I was but a wee encumbrance on my parents, and it used to make a most wonderful growl and a definitely safe to breathe smoke/smell effect when one 'revved' the Pod by the launch device.
Now you mention it, I distinctly recall the smell of a particular toy train's smoke effect. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, what could possibly go wrong? -DZ
that xamster image jumpscared the shit out of me
I plan on using the P-Hub bass guitar riff one day. That's _really_ going to jumpscare the crap out of people. -ED-1TA
@@thebreadcircus I'll keep that in mind...
The podracing game is something wouldn't mind seeing remade and expanded upon.
I wonder how much work it would take to fully remaster the game
There was fan remake couple years back, but got forced down by the Mouse.
It needs a Remake, not a Remaster
I've been looking forward to this. My happiness has doubled with this new video.
Neva Kee does appear on the track in the very first shot on the ground, in the back, hes being hauled.
-DZ
nailed that thumbnail
Love the intro where you did an 8-bit version of Fuel by Metallica. Flashbacks to old NASCAR on NBC there.
At 3:00 you give credit to warped perspective. The actual channel name is warped perception.
This game was so great when I was a kid, and I still love it. I'm glad to see someone else who appreciates it. Also, Mars Guo OP, pls don't nerf.
I've always described pod racing as "chariot races with jet engines instead of horses." Now I think I'll revise that statement to "The coolest parts of every kind of racing rolled into one."
Idea for why Dud bolt and Aldar Beedo's engines have the sloping fronts and small intakes: Downforce. If these engines are getting enough air for their needs already, the slopes could have been added to force the engines down and give more control, similar to/reminiscent of how the wings on formula one cars use the front and back wings to get more grip.
This video reminds me of speed racer special features
12:35
In the book they explain how it works.
You should talk about Grav-ball and some of the other sports in Star Wars, it's very interesting
I never thought I'd see the day where each podracer's engines get a deep dive. I know nothing about engines btw, I learned a lot!
1) You seem to have put a lot more thought in how podracers work than anyone who was involved in making the movie. I bet those people were like "magic space technology go brrrrrr!"
2) I remember reading somewhere, on some canon source back in the day, that the podracers that have big turbine fans in the front use jet engine, while those that have no fans, use rocket engines.
Still working on this vid 😅 2/3 through now.
Imo the video would have benefited from reversing opacity when highlighting something. Ie everything else is a white blur EXCEPT the point of interest. Xoxox
For sure. I was at the end of my wits and at the end of 15 hour work days when I did a lot of the effects work. Crunch. It kind of shows. -ED-1TA
How could you just leave out the best pod in the game!? My man Bullseye Navior!
I recognize Fuel anywhere 🤘🏼.
Hail The Bread Circus
Hail to you, champion. -DZ
I really enjoyed this video thank you for the effort!
Sebulbas pod racer makes an X because it's symbolic. Anakin (Vader) is chasing an X shaped ship through narrow trenches.
Ben Quadranaros A Star Wars Story is the real movie we need!!
Superb video.
Thank you! Our intention was to create the definitive video on this topic. Granted, there aren't too many podracer videos out there, at least not yet. We thought it'd be a good idea to make a decent one, something that could become a classic. -DZ
@@thebreadcircus Decent is a hard undersell. The only way this could've been more in depth or detailed is if you had someone from ILM or Lucas himself talking about podracing.
As Palpatine said it best in EP1, we will watch your your career with great interest.
-DZ
Great commentary
You should have played the deleted scene which was an extensive cut of the introductions, some of these characters actually appeared in that deleted scene
I remembered this game during the past year and found the CD-ROM at my parents' place, but I've not tried to install it yet. Knowing what he77 my Rogue Squadron 1 brings me trying to play it I've been afraid it wouldn't be worth it.
Maybe it would. And maybe it would work no problem.
Both of those games are probably going to bring heck upon you. If you join our Discord, we'll help you get both working properly. You won't need your discs. -ED-1TA
I believe the game is now also on Switch?
the small size of the fuel tanks make a bit of sense even without hyperdense fuels, the race only lasts about 15 minutes.
My favorite deleted scene is when they show us Ratts Tyrell's wife and kids before he dies in a gigantic fireball.
I'm surprised Sebulba didn't have high traction and acceleration, to mimic the ramming. His stats seem more what I'd expect from Anakin, get up to speed and don't mess up
The scene with his pod decoupling wasn’t in the theatrical or DVD cut either. That must be from the directors cut or deleted scenes
So...
Millennium Falcon: street legal hot rod
Podracer: Supermodified Sprint Car during the "golden age" of oval racing.
Mars Guo hands down for me, the reason his cooling was so bad was because his boost lasted 2-3x longer then other racers.
