I was quite far away but it felt like I was 50meters away from it , a bit like with Yasur volcano where you are watching the eruptive vents directly from the rim , less than 50m away from it.... Hi Ced what kind of smell is it near the volcano ? i 'm asking the question because i was given a stone once from someone who had been to the Stromboli, and the stone smelt of sand when it is very hot , though the actual stone was cold .
Most of the time if the volcano smells something, it is the sulfur dioxyde and hydrogen sulfur gases which smell like rotten egg. But this smell is not always there, it depends if there are some gases , their concentration, and whick kind of gases. Concerning the smell of hot and cold basalt, it's difficult to describe it other than saying it smells basalt :)

Nowadays nothing will happen as there are no eruptive activity inside Raung caldeira as far as I know. But if you had been close to the eruptive vents back in 2015, it would have scared the shit out of you for sure ! The explosions were so fast and so powerful in many different places that you would not have been able to guess where it would have started. Anyway it is quite difficult to go down the caldeira. There is a way but you have to find it and take some risks. I was there alone and from my location it was absolutely impossible to go down, a vertical wall about 100m deep so thanks but nope thanks 😅

I did a solo expedition of 3 days and 2 nights and I was able to see the eruptions only a few hours by day; maybe 3 or 4 , and same by night.... The first day was only fog rain and clouds , it was very boring ! And I could not risk myself into going further around the rim of the crater, alone in the fog so I just waited..... But it was definitely worth waiting ! The sound of the explosions was incredibly loud , gunung RAUNG indeed.....!
Haha yes you're right, sorry fort that.....I'm seriously thinking about remastering it completely. Not only the sound but the quality of the video is quite bad. I'm definitely not familiar with mixing and editing but I try to get a little bit better every time

As you can see with my other videos in 2016 I moved to La reunion Island with one of the most active volcano on earth. I am so happy and so lucky to live there since then. I hope you are getting well, you were young in 2015 so I guess you are not a student anymore nowadays , I wish you all the best !
You are completely wrong , there was no wind at all , the microphone was oversaturating only because of the extremely loud sound of the explosions. This volcano is called gunung "Raung" and I can confirm that the echo chamber caused by the caldeira makes the sound of the explosions extremely loud and frightening.

And this is why it is called "gunung Raung" which means the "roaring mount" : the caldeira acts like an echo chamber and amplifies the sound of the explosions !
