Plan built 74" glider. 1.2Kg The flight battery is hidden between the pilots feet. The four servos are all hidden in the wing with the receiver just below the wing.
Hello john I build the same Northrup primary Glider from the Plan out of Outerzone. I have build it for over half a Year ago, but not flying it😅 I am a bit nervous to fly it. My Flying Weight must be around 1500 Grams for the right CG. Is the CG. marking right in the plan? Greetings Timo from Germany.
@@timobarthelmes7740 Hi there Timo, I’ve got my GC set at 80mm back from the leading edge. I was able to get it to balance without adding much extra weight as I built the nose a bit longer than the plan showed, and managed to get the battery nice and far forward. Good luck with the maiden flight.
@@SlopeRCGliders thanks John for the fast answer, ok that is good to know were the CG. is exactly. I will try to put my battery Pack 4 cells AAA . also in front of the nose, I have also already packet Weight in my Pilot Figures Legs and the Body to get more Weight in the Nose Area, i think i have more Problems with the CG. That you on your Glider because my Construction is much Stronger and then also more heavy than yours. I also took Plywood for all Construction of the "Hull". And only for the Elevator and Rudder and almost for the Wings Balsa. And one more Answer, do you build your leprechaun on yourself or from a Builing Kit ? Greetings Timo
@@timobarthelmes7740 I built the Leprechaun from plans which we also downloaded from the Outerzone website. I made quite a few changes to the original design such as removing the wing pylon. Since posting the original video of mine flying, I’m aware that a couple of kit manufacturers have produced a kit with the same modifications.
@@SlopeRCGliders ok that is realy interresting that many manufactures chanched This🤔 so you have to look before you upload a Video also the producers look award to you. Do you have no interress to produce your Models in Kits? So so many people willnhave so such Beautiful gliders you build by yourself, but no one who can build these from plans only from Outerzone can bulid it by himselfs. For me its no Problem to build these fron plans from Outerzone. I already build around 5 or 6 models from Outerzone. Also the Medicine Man but not in Original Size, I upscaled him to 50% more Size, now he has 2,30 Meter Wingspan. And also the Sinbad with only open Windshield with no Canopy like the oldglider models. I build it in 3 Meters Wingspan for towline, and he flys so so beautiful, but i also bulid the sinbad just right now in 2 Meters Wingspan with motor in the Nose, but not finished him yet, have to bulid the Wings only. I wish you a nice Evening, healthy and many happy Landings. Best greetings Timo
There's something about the primary gliders that has always appealed to me, the simplicity and obvious aerodynamics are as attractive to me as the sexy composite gliders. Another beautiful bird expertly flown.
Hey! what a blast from my past. In 1978, I had a copy of RC Modeler with these plans and took to enlarging the plans from the mag to full size. Life changes, etc. put into a box that has followed me. Today I find this TH-cam video and I am young again. Over the years, I have found that many aircraft builders of the day, took the basic design and made changes to denote their brand. Rounded or elliptical wingtips or even a full body enclosure. I need to go and look at the parts again. RC transmitters and receivers have changed yet again and I feel compelled to complete the mission. I cannot believe this! Thank you.
I always pay extra attention to every Northrup design that is demonstrated in flight. Many diverse designs were shown for small and large aircraft - plus propeller and jet designs. I am still amazed today with the Northrup legacy.
Another beautiful glider! My father was a high school student during WW2, and he was a member of the school glider club. It was one of the 2000 schools in Japan which had primary glider. He often talked about the glider. Your beautiful glider reminded me of my conversations with my father.
Superb!Nothing to add more. It's interesting to see that at the same epoca, gliders looked alike.Northrop in the USA,SG in Germany, and Avia in France were quite similar. In less than ten years,a fantastic progress was made, particularly in Germany. Thanks a lot Mr. John !
Thanks-loved every second, it brought me 50 years back, i had an Action Man Red Devil parachutist, but the parachute on lasted a few jumps. My grandmother then made a perfect parachute from thin silk, and it worked perfect. Thanks for reminding me and thanks for your fantastic videos.
What a classic glider! Beautifully flown and built, hiding the servos and battery really shows off the exposed frame. Love how you can just park it and it sits there, makes for a very smooth landing as well. All maidens should go this well! 💯👍🏻
Absolutely lovely, John! Action Man doesn’t look quite so terrified now that he knows you are flying it for him! And, he looks quite the part in his new outfit - great work, Caroline!
Really beautiful - the video made me smile. As a model pilot, I was not interested in slope flying, but you bring across the fascination for it perfectly.
John, this is probably one of your most hand crafted models you've built to date .. really pretty build high details ... Hope you guys are all healthy and doing very well across the pond .. blessings Ed in Phoenix writes
This is one of my favorite gliders, not modeled often! Bravo, I am thinking my extra brick RX now has a new subject for a smaller version. Love to see you do a post WWII German wooden gull wing type
Looks so beautiful! Wonderful model, quite similar to the well-known SG-38. Both types were flown during these times mostly along the hill slopes. Today you can watch a reconstruction in flight on the Wasserkuppe.
many probably do not realize that these types of "primary gliders" were flown much like this a while before the Wright Bros ever flew . BTW even the earliest humans were aware of flight. All they had to do was watch the birds . They even most likely made little gliders, sort of like the little balsa wood gliders we have today, to experiment with. .
As usual, you never fail to entertain and awaken boyhood dreams of flying with Action man. Awesome build and flight demonstration. As a token of appreciation I would like to offer you an instrumental piece I have composed for use in one of your magnificent flight films.
All primary gliders are amazing fun, just very different fun from something with actual performance. Great model, may build a Zogling or Grasshopper myself
It actually flew better than I thought it might. Although it looks light, It’s relatively heavy with all the hardwood in the fuselage, and it’s obviously a very draggy shape. I wouldn’t have liked to try and fly it in less wind.
Um dos Hobbys mais lindo que existe, e esses vídeos são muito lindos, sempre que posso eu vejo um, meus parabéns por divulgar esse Hobby que é maravilhoso, muito obrigado meu amigo.
Is the fact that you fly near a cliff with an updraft necessary for its flying and maintaining flight or is the updraft a hinderence that you have to navigate around. It would be like a stringless lite in that respect. Like a wave furls into shore an updraft billows outward in sweep . Is it constant and steady or does it ever change direction. Is there a point of no return if you fly it too far out and it.gets swept away by the wind? Is Joe filled with sand or an adj adjustable wait to keep the nose down? Once built a balsa wood free filgtht glider and didnt have enough wait in the nose so I got nothing but lift ... It climbed very fast for about 50 feet on a windy day then went verticle, did a midair cartwheel and spun into the ground broke into 20 pieces. It was a free flight model with no rc controls. Set to get lift and flight in a large circle then land.
Hi there, the glider is getting lift from the wind coming up the slope. It is effectively always flying down through the air and loosing hight to maintain forward flight, just like a bike going downhill. However because the air is moving upwards faster than the plane is descending, it can maintain hight. The GI Joe doesn’t have any weight in it, however there is a heavy battery between his legs and a small amount of lead attached to the very nose of the glider.
In my opinion probably one of the most beautiful birds you've put in the air yet. I'd be very curious as to where I could get my hands on plans for a primary glider such as this.

This is crazy, amazing to see such a scale model of this iconic glider. Your work is really amazing.
Thank you. So glad you like it.
And the music synchronised perfectly with the movement!
beautiful scale vintage glider!! and so stable too! cheers!
I hope that little guy enjoyed it as much as we did.
Hi John.. what's nostalgic, i loved this model my friend, remind my dad and our models... thank's ... a hug for you
Great model and great flying. All I ever did with my G.I. Joe was to tie him to a homemade parachute and chuck him as high as I could.
That is gorgeous. What a view.

Epic , Many Thanks John and the Crew very nicely done
That looks superb, I do hope Action Man enjoyed his flight!
He did!
That may be the most interesting glider you have ever built.
Fantastic video, as always! The best on the net. That design is what I based the Affordaplane on.
This is my favorite glider. I have often wanted to build the full size one. Thank you
Another gorgeous model & captivating video.. :D
Love it, absolutely beautiful!
Thanks as always for sharing John, cheers!! 😁❤
Up there with my favourites. Fabulous!
Awesome John. That is really nice. Thanks for the share.

congratulations on a very nice flight
i love that model and its perfect flight. amazing.

And never ceasing to amaze and surprise us all…
Beautiful!
So beautiful. Thank you.

You've hidden the electronics very well! What a amazing job and flies so nicely.
Really Awesome Video Beautiful glider and flying
Nicely done John!
I like the way you've created the ailerons. Hardly visible, well done
Nice plane I live it and it Flys nice . I know your having fun
Beautiful plane. And beautifu camer work s always! I'd love to build one like that - I'd be scared of losing it off that cliff though!!
Just spectacular

Awesome !
