Be proud of your parents because they are authentic people----living within their means and always saving for tomorrow. Your relatives who only spent money on brand names (nothing wrong with this IF you can truly afford it without sacrificing your savings rate) and called your parents "khibnyiab" are nothing but pretentious (tsabmuaj) people who may look "shiny" on the outside but probably have very little in their bank account.
My family same situation. We have 9kids I’m the oldest. Only difference was we live in MN so there was a lot of jobs them nyiaj ntsuab and my parents worked as dishwashers during winter at restaurants 6 days a week thiab noj nyiaj welfare. I remember when my mom didn’t know how to drive yet and she takes the city bus to work all the time. She leaves us kids home alone (I was the eldest girl so i watched all the younger kids) cause we had no grandparents. I didn’t know how to cook yet so she would leave food on the table for us. During summer they take us kids we go pick pickles or ginseng in WI. They saved every penny never bought anything unnecessary or new. Later on they joined farmers market then start investing in real estate as us kids got older. Today my parents have more money than all us kids combined but we did learn from them about saving money and working hard. Today none of the new generations can ever beat the older generations.
your parents did the right things from buying stuff from thrift stores. this is the best way to build a life with small income. i wish i had known there’s a thrift store when i first married and built my family. it’s old to the owner but new to new owner and as long as it is still helpful to one it’s all good products. noone should insult anyone regardless what or how one person does
Wow, zoo siab rau tsev neeg no ua nej yeej muaj leej txiv zoo qhia nej ua neej es nej ua tau tshaj nej niam thiab txiv txoj kev ntshaw lawm mog. Very inspiring story! Thank you for sharing with us. 😊
Best dad and parent's forever.. wish I had this growing up! I don't think it's a bad idea going to the THRIFT STORES, some items is useful but now I know it's sometimes the ones who passed away or you don't know where it came from! But, I don't feel bad, we all go THRIFTING once in awhile!! That's my secret too all my life too growing up!! But, nobody knows when you wear THRIFT STORES items unless you let them know or go with them shopping!!

Nothing wrong with buying clothes and misc items from thrift store. It can save you lots of money. Parents had their priorities right. Everything doesn't have to be brand new and brand name.
Thank you for sharing your parents’ story. Your father is a very wise man for his time. Congratulations to all of your siblings for reaching your goals. This is an inspiring story.❤❤❤
I agree with your parents there is no need to be wearing brand names lol I never got to wear any growing up either and nobody say anything. It was after I got married that my husband spoiled me and I spoiled myself. Living within your means is hard to do but it's always better. Your parents deserve the new house and you kids txawj xav kawg to love them in the end.
Now, don't get this wrong. The secret to a fulfilled life is not material things which includes money. But it what you have in true respect. Do not misunderstand respect for envy, jealousy, or luck. Furthermore, Success is not necessarily respectful. So, we don't just do anything to win, but we do what is right and fair. The story is a wonderful story of hard work and fruition. Work hard and long enough and is bound to yield some goodness. But to say that the story is a complete and the better way to success, falls short of decency in many measures. In life, we must truly care and love to the best of our abilities, and it does mean using all of our resources accordingly. And, we must keep disappointments and hurt at bay for they are only good for growth and learning. Prolong emotional distress will do much harm and limits clarity. Have a wonderful night.

I applaud your parents who persevere through it all, especially coming from the mother land with no education and not knowing how this new world works.
Don’t feel bad about your parents. I do the same to my children too. We are shopping at Kmart for clothes and shoes for my kids when they grow up. We still lived in the same house for 45 years to these days. My kids are very successful now. They are BA and Master degrees and they have their own job. My goal is to help my children ‘a future.
This is what an American dream is about! The journey from rags to richest. Congrats on your parents' success. It truly takes discipline and dedication to stay on track!

I rather live a modest/simple life and have money than spend foolishly and worry about money.
This is why the rich get richer n the poor get poorer… the rich act poor while the poor act rich
