  • I decided not to disassemble the shot pouch completely as I wanted to keep it as original as I could. Besides the patina, the pouch had a lot of dirt and grime on the brass parts. Also the leather was very dry and stiff as it hadn't been taken care of. The leather also had some cracks but overall it was in good condition. I started by cleaning everything with soapy water.
The patina was removed with a mixture of flour, salt and vinegar which was very effective. The brass parts were then polished to a shiny finish and for the leather I used a leather care set from IKEA, ABSORB. It includes a cleaner and a leather cream. It worked really well, the cleaner handled everything the soapy water left behind and the cream made the leather soft and gave it a semi gloss finish.

Instead of gunpowder I would say that held shot for a black powder gun. Shot bags were very common and similar to this.

That's a shot pouch. Leather wasn't preferred to carry powder in because leather isn't waterproof like a powder horn or flask is. What came out of it in the beginning wasn't dirt, it was lead dust from the shot that was in there. In those days lead shot wasn't hardened like it is now so bouncing around in a bag like that the lead actually rubs off some.

That is NOT a powder bag. It's a shot bag for a fouling piece
