    I would love a video on orientation! I'm planning on coming in august and would love to know more about people's recent experiences as a lot of the videos I've found are a few years old

      Hey Victoria, I will definitely make one but it'll have to be after vacation as I'm flying out this Friday but I'll post one as soon as possible! For now, here's a link to my orientation vlog if you haven't already seen :) th-cam.com/video/HTGS28EbKuI/w-d-xo.html

    Awesome video! I'm about to finish up my contract here in Korea. I also taught middle school...the boys can be quite a handful, huh?
    Really enjoying your videos!

      Thanks Matt! I knew your handle sounded familiar and realized it's because I saw you in Jessica's videos :)
      Congrats on finishing the year! Are you headed back home? And I'm glad you understand.. I recently found out that my second school is changing. I had a measly but wonderful 3 all girls classes at that school but I'm being switched to another all boys school with a horrible reputation in my city haha

    Sharon, thank you for brilliant informative videos. Please advice did you purchase 160-hours TEFL or 120-hours TEFL? Which one is recommended ?

      Hi Aida, glad you found the video helpful! I did the 120 hours. More definitely can't hurt! I also have a video all about the recruiter I used and my TEFL certificate. Feel free to check it out! th-cam.com/video/uaXZR_kK18o/w-d-xo.html

    What means of transportation do you have ? Or do you just walk?
    And is it pretty safe in Korea?

    • @SnapshotsofSharon
      @SnapshotsofSharon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my city (Chungju) I primarily take the bus, taxi or walk. I bus to my main school (approx. 20 mins) and I walk to my second school (approx 15 mins). I have friends who have to bus an hour to their rural schools though so I got lucky. The city itself is small enough where you can walk most places and taxis are very convenient and cheap as well! I do feel very safe in Korea. I'm sure there's always those unfortunate encounters in any country but I feel safer here than anywhere else I've been.

    What's the difference in positives or negatives with POEs and MOEs?

    • @SnapshotsofSharon
      @SnapshotsofSharon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Brooklyn, MOEs are generally more desired since they consist of the largest metropolitan cities in Korea (e.g. Daejeon, Busan, Ulsan etc). POEs are good if you're not keen on a specific city. The risk with POEs is that might end up somewhere very very rural. If you're looking for a more "authentic" cultural experience and wouldn't mind rural then POEs would be good. However, even if you pick a POE, you could still end up in a decent sized city (e.g Cheongju) but it wouldn't be a metropolitan city. Also, we get paid more in POEs! :) however, you have no idea exactly where you'll end up until you arrive in Korea one way or another. You'll just know what MOE or POE you're in.

    Does this program include teachers from Philipppines and other Asian English speaking countries?

    How long are you allowed to stay in South Korea? And can you "renew" your contract when your time is up?

    • @SnapshotsofSharon
      @SnapshotsofSharon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My visa and Alien Registration Card is good for 13 months. You can keep renewing your contract if you want to stay another year (assuming you school is hiring again and likes you). In Busan, it's an option to renew contracts for 6 months whereas most other places is 1 year renewals.

    HI Sharon! :) How's the water quality? I hear it's hard, and some English teachers have said the water quality makes them shed their hair even more. Do you have any experience w/ that? Also, is there a water filter system or filter faucet attachment to purchase in S. Korea for drinkable water? Thank you! :)

    • @SnapshotsofSharon
      @SnapshotsofSharon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda! The water quality is definitely not great haha. I've heard the same about the hair shedding. Honestly, I shed a lot but that's not abnormal for me. I shed like a dog back home too so I can't blame Korea for that. At least I haven't shed noticeably more here hah. And yes, I've heard of water filtering systems/faucet attachments though I don't personally own one myself!

    • @musingsofajay387
      @musingsofajay387 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something definitely makes people shed their hair a lot. As someone who went through it myself I can say it differs for people. When I flew back from the states for vacation the climate change really messed with my scalp health and gave me a skin problem. After finding a proper doctor and medication it went back to normal. Other people may be losing hair due to improper eating (change in diet) , stress, or the water. I have a filter just in case because it leaves red rust residue all over my sink .

    Hello! First of all, I enjoyed the information you provided it have me so much peace! The question I have is about Moe? Pov? I can't recall the terms you used. Anyhow I am filling out the application and I only have the options of suburban and urban. What do you recommend I select? I personally would love to teach in a rural area, but of course as you stated it's all at random. Thanks! :D

      Hey there, I recently did a video on whether it's safe to move to South Korea as that's often a concern for family and friends. Perhaps in a few years time they will feel more comfortable with the idea of you moving abroad. I would just lay out all the details for them and include them in every step of the process. South Korea is one of the safest, best options for teaching English. They're a pretty developed country and the benefits they provide to their foreign English teachers are great! There's also a huge expat community and tons of other English teachers there as well so maybe start with those details when you try to ease their concerns :)

    So, when you apply for EPIK can you choose what grade you prefer? or do they just give you a random grade? I am 13 years old and I have wanted to do EPIK for a while but, obviously I am not old enough. But, when I get the chance I will most likely do it, so I am just trying to get as much information as possible.

      If you are a Korean national you can still apply, only if you have been a resident of one of the 7 listed English speaking countries and have studied there from 7th grade through University.

    Hi Sharon! Hope you are doing well :D
    Question, how did you pick your apartment?
    Was it chosen for you or you found it on your own near the school you teach at? But EPIK pays for all that right, just not your food and other things you want right? Hope that one day I will teach english in Korea!!! :D I miss my country lol. Planning on going again in two years for the Olympic Games if you didn't know they are having the games there, lol.

    • @SnapshotsofSharon
      @SnapshotsofSharon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Richard! I'm doing well, thank you :D You don't get to pick your apartment. The POE/MOE places you in an apartment and they try to place it near your main school. I teach at 2 schools (most people teach at 3 in my city) and my apartment is close to both my schools! But that's just luck as I have friends in this apartment who bus an hour to their schools. EPIK takes care of your rent, airfare, and gives you a "settlement" allowance to buy stuff for your apartment. I pay for my own utilities, internet, phone bills, groceries, etc though.
      I am indeed aware of the 2018 Olympics happening in Pyeongchang! :) I really hope you get to be here for that!

      I work in a POE so my base pay is 2.2 million KWN. I believe it's $100 extra for every school. Here's a break down of other base pay amounts: www.epik.go.kr:8080/contents.do?contentsNo=49&menuNo=278
