Finally...an intelligent guy without narcissistic tendencies, making the presentation about the equipment instead of himself. Clear but plain spoken so those of us technologically challenged can at least follow the bouncing ball. Thanks.
This mixer is astonishing. I've had it for a week now. My acoustic guitar recorded with my condenser microphone and in my room sounds much better than before! (and I was using an expensive card and mixer). I also recorded electric bass with the DI input and it's marvelous. We have a winner here.
Really great review, I just bought one! In the UK the power switch orientation is natural and the 'correct' way for us. All our light switches and power switches operate in the opposite direction to the US.
Thanks for a great clearly spoken review... produced in plain english for someone such as me who is new to mixing and recording Really appreciated Alan
Thanks for the review! I was torn down between this and the Yamaha MG10XU, but I'm not too concerned about built in FX and also multi-tracking on this one is a very nice touch. Thanks again
'Off = Up' /'On = Down' is how all power and light rocker style switches work in Australia and as far as I recall, the UK. Reasoning being is that the OFF position typically has a red dot on the top of the rocker which can only be seen with the switch is in the 'Down = On' position. IOW: Safety.
I've had this thing for...years and years, put it through hell and possibly close to 600 shows, used it for home recordings...I think it's time has finally come, maybe if it's just cleaned properly but...guess what... I'm putting an order in for a new one whooo!!! I'm not surprised, there is really no alternatives for the working muso at this price point
Wow….. by comparison, I’ve had two , more expensive hybrid mixers during that time. The soundcraft and presonus series. Both were babied, stayed in one place at home the whole time and just crapped out on me for no reason. Those things are absolutely garbage but at the 500 bucks range.
Half the value of a Ray Ortega review is in the outstanding video quality and production levels. Of course the info was also excellent as always. If/when I need to step up to a mixer, I will hit your link; thanks!
On/Off is backwards on this mixer. Most A&H consoles use a push button switch, recessed. Build quality seems great, similar to larger GL, GS, series with each pot having a retaining nut securing it to the surface. The preamp gain is similar as well but the USB output has to be low to not allow clipping the AD converters. More expensive units use a hard limiter before the AD but hard to tell at this price point. Looks like a nice analog front end for a podcast or project studio, USB out to a channel is nice. If you need more complex look at the Behringer XR18 or X18, 18x18 usb bidirection, tablet or PC/OS controlled.
Thanks, Peter. What I did find is that you can record at pretty low levels and the dynamic range of the preamp is good enough to bring up significantly in post without introducing much noise. So outside of having small waveforms while recording, it does a great job.
I have the same model and the only thing that I could say is that the best mixer for the money. Great review, keep up the good work. You just gained a new subscriber.
Thanks for doing this. Been excited to hear your thoughts. Definitely putting this on my wish list to replace my Mackie 820i with a dead FireWire board and outdated drivers.
I was about to get the new Rode RODECaster Pro for $599 but you sir have convinced me otherwise. I don't really need that much of equipment for LiveStream. The Allen and Heath ZEDi-10FX will do.
Thanks. I don't know of a battery option but it doesn't mean there isn't a way to hack one ;) I haven't looked into though. Might be some portable battery options these days.
Hey Ray, wondering if you think the recording quality of this is better than one of the UAD interfaces. I understand this is more of a mixer and just so happens to also be an interface, but wondering if latency issues are solved with DSP based interface versus this.
Thanks, Roman! You probably don't need a multichannel though, do you? I might lean towards another Mackie if not. Are the preamps actually going bad? A Mackie is usually a lifelong workhorse.
My bad, It's not the MIxer. For the podcast I'll run two mics in person or my mic and skype/fb call/phone call on a mix minus setup then record it all on a digital recorder via the tape output. It sounds clean on my headphones and on the tape output so I think it's something else. I'm trying to do a live broadcast setup with OBS and use my Mackie to mix all the audio outside of OBS and then just feed it in as the main audio source for the whole broadcast. I'm getting these clicks and pops in the final recording. I've isolated it down to OBS. It might be a setting in OBS or my computer maybe cant keep up. Thanks for your help! Sorry for the random tangent conversation. ;)
Hiya Ray and Interested people, The reason the on/off switch is oriented that way is in the case of something falling down the back of the mixer it won't strike the switch and cause it to turn off. The other option is to simply orient it sideways
I have a zed10fx and I have the same issue with having to turn up my gain higher than I am comfortable with. The audio is nice and clean but the waveform is small.
I'm not sure of the issue, I think maybe the USB is attenuated but the good news is that in the end the audio is fine. Do your normalizing in post and you're set. That said, if you're live streaming it may be a bigger problem.
BEWARE of the USB side of this thing. Know that in M1, M2, M3, M4 mode, the Mixer's EQ is NOT recorded in your DAW (ditto effects on the Zedi10 FX version) only the DRY (pre-EQ) signal is recorded. In M1, M2 Aux and FX mode, NO EQ is recorded either (ditto effects on the i10FX). EQ (and effects) will only be recorded in M1, M2 L & R mode and they will actually be recorded on both, tracks 3&4. For example, if you have a guitar in slot 1, the EQ and Effects will only be recorded on tracks 3 & 4 in your DAW and track 1 will remain DRY throughout. Not sure why it behaves this way but it is just weird and very confusing.
In most cases, the isolated outputs of a multichannel mixer via USB will be 'dry' because they are direct outs meaning they come right off the preamp and the stereo output is post everything else like EQ and faders cause that is considered an actual mix. The nice thing is you can mix without affecting the recording and then do all your post production with your clean, isolated tracks. If gain staged properly, you won't have to worry about messing up the recording while you can also mix for an audience or a final track that you want to deliver right after recording. This has it's downsides too of course but that's just how I find that most multichannel mixers work. It may be different or you may get a pre/post choice in upper end mixing desks, I haven't gone down that rabbit hole far enough;)
Thanks to Brian Frushour and the good ppl at Sweetwater for recommending this mixer to me for my own podcast and thank you Ray for giving a great in depth review of the Zedi 10... I'm eager to set mines up now... one quick question i do have is how do you record a regular phone conversation into this mixer? im unsure of what channel i would plug my cell phone into... thanks again
You can bring your cell phone into any channel. Connect a cable like the Hosa CMP153 in this Kit kit.com/rayortega/mix-minus-to-smartphone and if you want to send all the audio from your mixer back into the phone without that person on the line hearing themselves back in a loop, check out the video in that Kit along with the iRig2 that I use for creating that setup.
For skype: Use a microphone that is a bit more sensitive. You should be able to have enough gain for the mike to clip. Then just turn gain slightly down, and you are good to go.
Yes, good review! You said something I need clarification on. Regarding the PR40 and the mixer preamp....You said that by cranking the gain up on the mixers preamp could lead to mic bleed to other mics if used. Would it? I would think that it would increase the amplitude of the recorded signal but I don't see how it would increase the sensitivity of the other mics to create bleed over...(?). I might have misunderstood what you were saying.
Robert Zebrowski thanks. Bringing the preamp near full is going to make the mic much more sensitive to any noise in the room. So someone sitting close is much more likely to enter your mic.
I'm a bit late to the party but that's me lol. But I have been using A&H digital/ analogue desks for a loooong time, so it's a supplementary little thing I'm looking to add to my gear and this looks perfect. Great review and well put together buddy. Thanks a lot!
@@RayOrtega I did get one. It's a got a whole lot of functionality inside a small package. Knob spacing is a bit tight but nothing that will impair use. It's a great bit of kit so far!
Ray Thanks for the great review, very helpful. How do you think this compares to something like the Mackie ProFx8v2? I'm a little torn between the two, at about the same price point, but the Zedi seems to have a better USB connection (though some people online have had trouble with the Windows 10 drivers?).
+Michael Neal when it comes to Windows and drivers I don't have any experience so the reviews you see should definitely play a role if that is your setup. I think the main difference here besides the drivers, is multichannel. Either you need it or don't. That will make a lot of the decision. The Mackie will have a better build quality but probably performs about the same with multichannel.
Hey Ray, How does this mixer compare to the Allen & Heath ZEDi10fx ? Are all the effects necessary for podcasting? Also I am hoping to use this mixer with Samson Q2U mics. Do you think they will sounds good with this mixer? Thanks
Hello, I really need to know if (maybe by firmware update) I can assign in my DAW the 6 channels this mixer has (4 xlr + 2 lines), or definitely just the 4 XLR.
Hello, Is the AUX OUT stereo or mono? I plug headphones and only listen one side of the headphones, once I pull it out a bit then I can listen both. is mine broken?
I think typically and aux is mono so when you insert the jack to a single ring, it may be forcing the signal both left and right, my cable knowledge is lacking but I don't think it's broke. You should be monitoring via the headphones out and using the Aux out for mix-minus etc though.
Hi Ray, here from Chile. I just bought the Zedi10 and I'm trying to setup this thing so I can talk from a microphone connected to the mixer but hear my voice from the computer speakers. Is this possible can you explain to me how to do this? Thanks!
Hi, Patricio. If you connect your mixer via USB then set your computer speakers as the output in your computer settings you'll still need to use a DAW (editing software) to then use the monitoring option. However you don't want to do that because the audio will come out of your speakers and back into your mic. The other issue is latency, there will be some delay monitoring through the computer but you can give it a shot and see if it works for you. Thanks!
@@RayOrtega thanks!!!! I have another question. Do you know how can I ser the Zedi 10 and my notebook so I can play music on my notebook (ej. Spotify) but manage the volume, etc from the Zedi 10?
@@patricioibarrag Not sure if I understand but when you have the mixer plugged into your computer via usb, you make the mixer your output device and then when you play anything from your computer, you will control the volume to your speakers or headphone via the USB input on the mixer. Check out section 3 of the manual for info about the USB in and out controls
Hi Ray, great review - thanks! Fast forward to July 2018: Can your recommend any other compact mixers, even at a higher price point, that can record multiple independent tracks? They seem to be rare birds. I was hoping to find one with built-in compression for use by my clients, who need to create audio content quickly, without technical complication. The Yamahas offer compression, but only record a single stereo track. Being able to record multiple tracks is more important. Thoughts?
I have this mixer and have recorded a couple of in-person podcast episodes successfully. However, in testing adding a zoom call to the mix, I have spent hours trying to get Audition to pick up the caller's voice into a separate track without echo and cannot figure it out. The board claims a mix minus capability. Could you shed light on what I may be missing?
Although the Allen Heath Zed series are built well and the sound quality is very good, there is one issue with the stereo channels inputs: while these inputs accepts both TRS (balanced) and TS (unbalanced) jacks, the inputs are actually unbalanced so, if you want to connect the output of a balanced device to the stereo channels TRS inputs, you loose the balanced connection because the inputs are actually unbalanced. What is the point of fitting a mixer with TRS inputs that accepts a balanced signal, only to loose the balanced connection and half of the source signal level at the mixer input?
Hi thanks for the video. Would you say the record quality is comparable with the SSL2 Interface? in terms of gain, noise level, frequency rate? I just that I was between these models and I finally bought the SSL for my inmediate term purpose: record.
Hello Ray, could you tell me if the PFL feeds on this mixer are in stereo please? I was about to get the older Zed 10 series before i found out the PFL switches on that only allow you to hear a mono signal of each channel when active. I'm hoping it isn't the same for this one. TIA.
Sorry, Matthew, I don't know. I work mostly in dialog and don't often work with much stereo and this was a review unit so I can't test it. Hope you find out!
For the price, this mixer stills wins. Soundcraft came out with a series amzn.to/2MkYNm6 (affiliate link) and they have a good rep. in the industry but I haven't tried them yet
How to test out ST 3 USB Input? Just got my new mixer. Look like USB iN can be accessed on AUX out. However, no signal arriving from this channel when tested. Other channel AUX signals arriving fine. ? Mixer got a problem?
I just purchased the Allen & Heath zed10fx and want to add my own fx pedals to affect all active channels. It was easy on my Mackie mix8. I can’t seem to figure it out. Someone help, please.
Great review as always, thanks. Have you looked at the TASCAM US-42 Ministudio Creator? It looks to be geared for the podcast community. If you have I look forward to a review in the future. Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I have seen the Ministudio but haven't check it out yet. It might be an interesting option for some podcasters. Hopefully I'll take a look at some point.
Quick question. When sending M1-M2-L-R via USB to PC. How are those showing in Windows? will L and R show as one stereo device or 2 separate devices? Secondly, if they are 2 separate devices for L and R, are those going to play in windows into left and right channel of this device?
Thanks! This mixer is a still a great value option in 2020 but I also prefer to use something with a recorder on-board but of course that also increases the budget. But check out something like the L8 podhelp.me/ZoomL8zon
Hi Ray. Do you think this would be an appropriate device for using with Zoom, as Zoom would need a single mono sum output instead. Or do you think I should get a dedicated audio interface for streaming with Zoom?
Hello Ray, Thank you for the informative review. I have a problem playing music from my new 15” MacBookPro through the USBC TO USBB cord and getting sound on my new ZEDi 10. I don not even get the green level LEDS to light. I am thinking there is a setting on the Mac that I am missing. Any thoughts? Thanks again.
The Soundcraft Notepad 12FX is the most affordable. Its cheaper than the Allen & Heath and have incredible Pre-amps, Lexicon effects, Duck feature for podcasts, and you can record through 4 inputs plus use 2 headphones for monitoring for less than $180. Sry but no by far not the cheapest.
my Zedi8 mixer will not connect to my MAC at all. please help me out. My MAC has all the requirements, updates needed. My USB ports work on my MAC with any other device and mouse or external hook up. But the Zedi8 will not connect to it. It wont show up in the system preferences at all. some help would be a saver. thank you.
try using channel 3 instead of the line level "direct out" for the guitars, and/or do you have a plus 4 or minus 10 setting for the preamps? Also, it looks like you 48v phantom power is not activated. This may be why you have to boost the gain so high. The red light doesn't look lit compared to the blue light below it, and the button to activate seems raised. Please let me know if I am missing this, and completely wrong. I am speaking around time 7:16, Great review otherwise. Thanks.
Dynamic mics don't use phantom power and because they have a very low output, you have to boost gain most of the way. And as far as guitars go, I don't use them. A review focused on vocal dynamic mics meant for podcasting. Thanks for watching.
If you were live streaming, and had a skype caller, could you not: Patch AUX OUT to M1 LINE. Use M2, M3, M4 for studio mics. Turn off ST2 to AUX. Turn off M1 to AUX and turn off M1 to MIX. This would give M1 a mix minus the skype caller on ST2, and skype uses M1 as its default input. Your podcast would be streamed from Main Mix by pressing the M1 - M2 - L - R button. I don't have this mixer to try this on, would this work?
The sound quality and portability is great! But might be best suited from a studio or amateur occasional user. I work 6-7 days a week and this mixer apparently cannot take the constant movement. I use metal road cases and my gear is highly protected. I am on my 2nd Zed60 FX in 14-months time. the 1st mixer died 1 month out of manf warranty! Now Sept 03, 2018 I bought another Zed-10FX - Now almost 60 days into my daily use, the Right & Left XLR outputs are dead!! The store won’t take it back cause it past the 45 days -I bought the So called Pro- Warranty, plus it’s still under the manf warranty - So here’s the joke - I called the pro warranty company the deal is they’re supposed to do a replacement within 24 hours Right… yes what that means is if you use your pro coverage it’s a 1-time deal - They give you another mixer but the $75 that you paid for pro warranty is now gone! You will have to buy a whole new warranty when you get the new mixer - - REALLY?? Ok so now I call ALLEN & HEATH - A&L tried to throw the responsibility on the external warranty company - the warranty company throws it back to A&L - Allen/Heath decides to fix it with 4-6 week turn around - and I pay the $46 SHIPPING to get the defective POS back to them!!!!! I wished I could get my anger and frustration out through typing. I think its just a dam shame that ALLEN & HEATH are such HUNGRY good for nothing DOGS who don’t want to stand behind their so called HIGH- END JUNK unless you give them MORE MONEY!!!! It’s like Hooray for me and the hell with you - Right!! SHAME ON ALLEN & HEATH I will NEVER use their Expensive JUNK again and I don’t recommend it to any PRO user!
Hmm sorry that's really too bad that you had so many issues but glad to hear about your experience which might help someone else make a decision. Thanks for watching.
question: Can I record at the same time from stereo 1 and M1 or M2? And if yes, how the Stereo channel apears in my DAW? Two separate tracks, or one stereo tracks?
It's a good question, at 7:43 it looks like what I say indicates that but looking at the selection it's M1, M2 and L+R so that makes me think it's a stereo mix of the full mix. Unfortunately since this was a loaner mixer I can't test it for you but the manual will definitely be helpful if you need to find the exact answer. Wish I could be more helpful.
The non "i" version is older and honestly I don't know why you'd choose it over the ZEDi10, it cost more and can't do multichannel. Maybe I'm missing something but I think I'd go with the i10 than the plain 10 version
Hi Ray, many thanks for replying so quickly. The only reason (that I could find in my own research anyway) was that the non "i" version had this capability called "mid frequency sweep" described as follows: "ZED-10FX features a responsive 3-band, swept mid frequency EQ design which utilises MusiQ - with optimised slope (or Q factor) for equalising individual instruments." Some people on acoustic guitar forums seem to think this is very useful. But I don't know if that would tip the scales versus the multitrack capability as you mention in the "i" version. Plus, as you say, the "i" version is a bit less expensive. I may need to call Allen and Heath and get a further in-depth explanation.
Any EQ feature is definitely not going to override multitrack if multitrack is something you need. Even then, with it being more affordable and offering deeper features such as multitrack, I think I would still lean towards the "i." But if you're a musician and that is important, maybe but still something I can do in my software. For dialog, for podcasting, or VO, I want a "flat" uncolored signal that I can then process in the editor later.
The effects are unusually high quality. I usually use studio effects and have never gotten a small mixer with them. They are useful so I think it's worth the extra few dollard (I've always steered away from fx on mixers) Glad I went with it this time. They are simple, but of good sound. However, compression is not among them, and that's a really miss.
Can I record everithing or is it just a multichannel mixer? For example, I want to stream with two mic´s the auxiliar inputs (l & r) and also stream the fx asigned to any particular channel... It means I´ll need to record or stream basically all the channels, but I dont know if I require an external soundcard to plug into master outputs. I don´t really need separated channels, just need to record the master channel.
Hey I'm new to this, I'm wanting to know is it possible to have my mic , gamesound and voip(my friends in teamspeak) an have them all on a different channel which I can adjust volume on all 3 of these. If I can do this what type of mixer would I need/type of wires etc. Thx sorry if this is stupid.
Thanks for the review. Ad an interface am I able to adjust sound levels on seperate tracks post recording. For a quick studio mix. I have the z10ifx. I can only get playback through the fx mix knob and main mix slider. Doing my head in. Ta Pierre.
Hello, I would like to ask whether it is OK to use this mixer or ZEDi8 to record guitar on the computer or better will be to use interface like Focusrite or Presonus? Before, I saw your review of Beringer Q802USB but there was problem to monitor in and out signal at the same time. So, I wanted to buy usb interface like Presonus audiobox usb96, but after seeing this video I think this mixer or ZEDi8 ( I think it is simmilar) can be also good to record instrument on the computer. Also, as you said, it is possible to record up to four instruments with this mixer as separate waves at the same so this could be good for small band...
The possibility to send M1,M2 and L & R. These left and right, are they the main left out and right out of the mixer or are they stereo 1 left and stereo 1 right?
Is there any way it's possible to listen to the stereo output trought headphones without having the computer on? Currently i have a setup with some setereo signals plugged in the ZEDI10. Not even when i plug in the ST1 channel i get a stereo image. every thing is mono what i hear trough the headphones..
Hey Ray, another great review. I always enjoy your videos. I have an unrelated question if you've got a second - I am planning on recording some interviews using my H4n and would like to monitor the audio in the process. However, I'm going to be on camera as well, so I don't want to be wearing wired headphones. Do you know of any wireless headphones that I would be able to monitor the Zoom audio with? All wireless buds I'm finding require pairing via bluetooth, and I don't believe you can do that with the Zoom. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, AJ. Interesting question. Not something I've tried or looked into before. Check this out amzn.to/2qRmztW lots of ratings and great overall but maybe look into reviews. Might be worth a try just to see if it might work.
Ray, thanks so much for looking into that! That product actually looks like it should work perfectly for what I'm wanting to do. I've got it ordered, so I'll let you know if it ends up working. Thanks again!
Good review. But discouraged because he did not show direct guitar plucking; how well it sounds. This mixer is designed, guitarist in mind; you don't need to us DI for guitar as manufacturer claims. I wanted to see that before I buy it.
Sorry you didn't get what you were looking for. My focus is voice over and dialog/podcasts, I'm not a musicians so I can't do those tests but hopefully someone who is has done them, that is the beauty of TH-cam, usually a video about it somewhere lol.
Ray, really enjoying your channel and reviews...thank you! Quick question for you...I'm auditioning analog mixers in this price point that will allow me to use DAW software on the computer, however I will also be using it with my new iPad Pro, so USB compatibility/usage will be important as well. If y ou had to choose between this Zedi1010 and the Yamaha MG10XU, how would you lean, and why? THanks in advance for your time and answer. Lou in Jersey
Thanks you, great video. I'm using the identical zedi10fx, usb to macbook pro, Logic x, for some strange reason the Mic 1 is the only physical input that will deliver a signal to Logic. I've solved a million things like this over the decades, do you supposed there's a setting I've overlooked. I've tried all combinations of usb output allocation, I've put in test proven cables. Have you ever heard of that? I worry it's an actual hardware problem, but so often a close look reveals it's really the user. Thank you for the video, any thoughts?
Usually to get multichannel into your software, the setting you need to change is in the software itself. Perhaps also on your computer's audio settings and maybe even updating drivers if required.
I'm pretty annoyed with this low volume recording going on with these new usb mixers. Even Yamaha and Soundcraft have these thing. Though I'm thinking maybe Behringer (my current mixer) is the one doing it wrong because volume, waves and the knobs seems spot on to me LOL but I need to upgrade to 4x4 usb soon.
Have a question When I use the 4 mono channels for the audio interface. and edit the tracks in the DAW individually with internal DWA effects. Do I still have a channel where everything goes back to the mixer?
What would you recommend with this as the minimum functionality but with slide type faders instead of knobs? Great video and info as always Ray! Thanks
In multichannel with sliders, this is the next step up podhelp.me/UFX1204BH a pretty cool mixer that I had in studio for awhile, did some tests with and liked. I have a ton of recorded audio tests with this mixer including my thoughts about it here soundcloud.com/rayortega scroll down and you'll find them all in a row
Hi, Ray! Would you recommend this mixer over the Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK? I have a remote podcast co-host via google hangout who records his audio locally and sends to me for final post, but I want to take live phone calls, send my audio + phone call to my co-host on google hangout, send my voice + co-host to the caller, monitor the entire mix in my headphones, and record my voice + caller locally on my mac + my H4N for a backup. I had originally settled on the Soundcraft , but we can't quite figure it out yet and this review is swaying my opinion! : )
So you already have the Soundcraft? I haven't tested it yet but from what I know, it seems like a great mixer. In either case, you'll get the same functionality and maybe even a little more from the Soundcraft but what you need is a couple different mix-minus setups, one for the phone and one for the co-host and then send all of that to individual tracks via USB to software and the H4n plugged in for backup.
Amazing. Thank you very much. We're placing the order for the mixer today and we'll give that set-up a try. Makes sense! Love your videos. Very helpful!
Ray, thank you again for another great video. I purchased this mixer because of your review and my recording needs. Currently, I am recording a podcast with Audacity. I have installed the ZEDi10 on my computer with the latest drivers. However, it is not recording multiple tracks out of the box. You showed that you do this in the video. Do you have a guide on how to setup multi-track recording some where? A side note, I use the ATR-2100 mic and I have the same issue with the gain. I think its the mic. I used a Behringer Q1204USB before and I have the same issue with the gain on that board and that mic. I was hoping that problem was going to be fixed. All that said, so far, I think the sound quality is tighter/smoother with the ZEDi10. That will not make a difference if I cant get it to work with audacity properly. With the proper drivers installed it is only recording in mono. =/ Thanks Ray
It could be a setting on your computer but not sure with Windows. You should try another piece of software to see if you can get it to work so you'll know more about where the problem is. I think you can download and try Reaper for free and if you try it and it works you probably won't go back;) As for the ATR, all dynamic mics need lots of gain. You have to be really close and you need to give them most of the gain the mixer has but make sure you watch my gain staging video and instructions for podcasters thepodcastersstudio.com/gainstaging
"4 in, 4 out 24bit/96khz USB 2.0 with true multichannel output to your DAW including bi-directional audio (audio in and out). This means you can connect up to four XLR microphones and input those mics into audio recording software such as Audition or Audacity with each channel of audio onto its own track. This allows you to edit each channel of audio, each microphone, independently in post production." This is description but is it works this way? I heard USB mixer can record only stereo signal so only 2 channels... Anyone can advise?
Tnx for this great video, So it can do Multitrack recording over 4 channels. Question, will aux and FX also send out on these 4 channels? Or will fx and aux only be outputted in the main outs. So can this mixer do multitrack recording with fx..? Im not used to mixers so hope its not a stupid question.
Hi Ray, ive in a lot of research about this mixer. I have a lexicon alpha and i want to upgrade. I have a metal proyect with decent quality with my interface, do you know if this mixer has better preamps or Di converters? The other option is a Scarlett 2i2, but im not sure. This is the mixer enough To seems closer to a Scarlett? Or at least to handle a guitar with vst and sounds natural? Please, help me.
Hi, good review! I bought zedi 10 fx and i have a question about FX of Zedi. I want to record my analog synthesizer sound through Line input with FX into DAW... I tried, but I could record just sound without FX of Zedi. Do you know maybe something about that? Thanks!
What would be an affordable mixer if you didn't need a multi-channel but did want to hear audio in and out in your headphones? would the Behringer XENYX X1222USB allow this?
Finally...an intelligent guy without narcissistic tendencies, making the presentation about the equipment instead of himself. Clear but plain spoken so those of us technologically challenged can at least follow the bouncing ball. Thanks.
Thanks, Jack. I really appreciate the feedback and kind words. Glad this was helpful!
I hate the Narc showoff. I switch off immediately......
This mixer is astonishing. I've had it for a week now. My acoustic guitar recorded with my condenser microphone and in my room sounds much better than before! (and I was using an expensive card and mixer). I also recorded electric bass with the DI input and it's marvelous. We have a winner here.
Is it true there are four seperate outs for recording via USB. Does it record "dry" or does it carry over FX or EQ settings? Thx
Really good review - refreshing to see someone giving the verdict at the beginning of the video too
Thanks, Bradley!
Really great review, I just bought one! In the UK the power switch orientation is natural and the 'correct' way for us. All our light switches and power switches operate in the opposite direction to the US.
Thanks, Thane! I appreciate the confirmation!
Thanks for a great clearly spoken review... produced in plain english for someone such as me who is new to mixing and recording
Really appreciated
Alan
Really great review, Ray.
Just waiting for my new Zedi10 to arrive and so this was a post-purchase check. Feeling extremely confident now!
I have the Zedi 10fx for about 4 years used mostly for karaoke. Is a good mixer in his range of price.
Thanks for the insights!
Enjoy the new mixer!
Wow….. by comparison, I’ve had two , more expensive hybrid mixers during that time.
Been considering buying one, thanks for the effort in making such good review!
Thanks, Javen, let me know if you get it?
Damn Brits, they screw up everything..They drive on the wrong side of the road too lol~
I have the same model and the only thing that I could say is that the best mixer for the money. Great review, keep up the good work. You just gained a new subscriber.
Is it okay to use as an audio interface? Thinking of swishing från apogee duet to this one.
Yes, this is also an audio interface, just with my external controls than having to make changes in software.
Thanks for doing this. Been excited to hear your thoughts. Definitely putting this on my wish list to replace my Mackie 820i with a dead FireWire board and outdated drivers.
Thank you! I appreciated your insight. I've been considering purchasing this unit. I now have more confidence about my purchase!
Ha, no, that was an edit;) That would be a problem if it did wouldn't it lol. Thanks for watching...so closely:)
I was about to get the new Rode RODECaster Pro for $599 but you sir have convinced me otherwise. I don't really need that much of equipment for LiveStream. The Allen and Heath ZEDi-10FX will do.
I also have the RCP and love it but glad this will work for your needs and you'll save a good deal of money!
Really good. Can use battery and doing recording without computer or mobile phone?
Great review Ray!! The pre-amps on my old Mackie are so done. I was actually going to ask you about a good mixer to get. Your timing is great!
Sorry for the random tangent conversation. ;)
Hiya Ray and Interested people,
The reason the on/off switch is oriented that way is in the case of something falling down the back of the mixer it won't strike the switch and cause it to turn off. The other option is to simply orient it sideways
Very interesting insight...hadn't thought of that one...thanks for sharing!
Im actually looking into this to replace my 1st gen Alesis Multimix.. it looks like a sweet solution!
Hard to beat for the price. Enjoy.
Hi Ray, nice review. Allen n Heath gear look top notch. But how does this compare with soundcraft notepad-12fx, which much cheaper? Thanks in advance.
Ray Ortega cool... thanks a lot i appreciate it
For skype: Use a microphone that is a bit more sensitive. You should be able to have enough gain for the mike to clip. Then just turn gain slightly down, and you are good to go.
Yes power switch is standard in the uk, great review thank you
Thanks!
I love these mixers, but they almost never have 70-75db of gain for my RE20 so I have some headroom.
I'm a bit late to the party but that's me lol. But I have been using A&H digital/ analogue desks for a loooong time, so it's a supplementary little thing I'm looking to add to my gear and this looks perfect. Great review and well put together buddy. Thanks a lot!
Soundcraft Notepad 12 FX is the only one I found that might be an alternative. A comparism would be interesting.
Thanks for a great review. Hope to grab one of these second hand on the weekend fingers crossed. Perfect for my needs it seems. Cheers!
Cheers! Let me know if you get one and how you like it
@@RayOrtega I did get one. It's a got a whole lot of functionality inside a small package. Knob spacing is a bit tight but nothing that will impair use. It's a great bit of kit so far!
@@MarkTurnerImages Great to hear, thanks for sharing!
Hey Ray! So, is it possible to multi-track/record 10 channels without latency or any noise?
kind of makes sense the switch , most house hold appliances here in Ireland clicked down is on :) , great review though :)
Thanks for the insight;) Cheers!
Eh! Ray como estas?I have zed A&H board, but I dont know how to use it...yeah... y need to do a stream show, is it useful for that?! thanks
Hey Ray,
How does this mixer compare to the Allen & Heath ZEDi10fx ?
@@RayOrtega no worries at all, thanks for the reply! 👍🏻
Hey any update if there is any mixers that compete with this now 2 years later? thanks!
Good review. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Ibarionex!
Excellent review, Thankyou Ray.
Quick question. When sending M1-M2-L-R via USB to PC. How are those showing in Windows? will L and R show as one stereo device or 2 separate devices? Secondly, if they are 2 separate devices for L and R, are those going to play in windows into left and right channel of this device?
Excellebt review ray. Appreciate it. Is there any update for 2020 on this or other mixers?
Thanks! This mixer is a still a great value option in 2020 but I also prefer to use something with a recorder on-board but of course that also increases the budget. But check out something like the L8 podhelp.me/ZoomL8zon
@@RayOrtega thank you
Hi Ray. Do you think this would be an appropriate device for using with Zoom, as Zoom would need a single mono sum output instead. Or do you think I should get a dedicated audio interface for streaming with Zoom?
Hello Ray,
Thank you for the informative review.
Yes, that series came out after this mixer. I have it on my list to review.
This might be a dumb question but how do hear your podcast while you’re recording
Ideally yes. You want to monitor the audio so you can catch issues when they happen.
my Zedi8 mixer will not connect to my MAC at all. please help me out. My MAC has all the requirements, updates needed. My USB ports work on my MAC with any other device and mouse or external hook up. But the Zedi8 will not connect to it. It wont show up in the system preferences at all. some help would be a saver.
thank you.
How can I record the four channels at the same time?
try using channel 3 instead of the line level "direct out" for the guitars, and/or do you have a plus 4 or minus 10 setting for the preamps?
Hello friend, does this hallen & heath Zed 10 mixer work for my home studio?
Do you dry record or transfer the EQ and FX that is set up in the mixer?
Hey Ray I have a serious question. Is there a way to set up a mix minus with only picking up skype audio, and not other desk top audio?
Hi, which one is better for live performance? ZED or ZEDi?? I don't need interface.
Is this better than buying a focusrite 18i8 interface ?
This was helpful! Are FX out and Aux out stereo or mono?
Hi, Richard, yes the aux/fx. sends will be mono on most if not all mixers
@@RayOrtega thanks... I am afraid that in this mode, records 1,2, AND the full L&R (WITH 1&2)
Can you kindly explain the reasons why one would choose the ZEDi10FX over the ZED10FX and vice versa? I'm really on the fence. Thanks much.
It's the Main Mix L/R
Thank you very much! great review!
Is there any way it's possible to listen to the stereo output trought headphones without having the computer on?
Currently i have a setup with some setereo signals plugged in the ZEDI10.
Not even when i plug in the ST1 channel i get a stereo image. every thing is mono what i hear trough the headphones..
Great Review Ray. I´ve done all the channels settings on cubase le and ZEDi10fx but no signal come from 3 or channel 4, help please. im not using Mac
As for the USB output options, I see mostly the mic inputs, can stereo 1 or stereo 2 be one of the usb output as well?
I think the outs are all mic channels or 1, 2 and FX and Aux or 1, 2 L, R
@@RayOrtega Thank you. So none of the stereo inputs (non-mixed) can be set as a usb output.
Cool, let me know if it works!
I meant Zedi-10FX, not 1010. Sorry!
Hi. My zedi 10fx is electric grounded or shock what is the possible cause?
Have a question
When I use the 4 mono channels for the audio interface. and edit the tracks in the DAW individually with internal DWA effects. Do I still have a channel where everything goes back to the mixer?
What would you recommend with this as the minimum functionality but with slide type faders instead of knobs? Great video and info as always Ray! Thanks
Hi, Carlos. Do you mean in a multichannel mixer or any mixer?
Hi Ray, I meant a multichannel mixer and Thanks again!
Can you use more effects at the same time?
This mixer beats several times more expensive proposals.
Hey Ray, thanks for the review, great video. Have you tried the mixer with ZOOM?
Thanks Ray
It could be a setting on your computer but not sure with Windows. You should try another piece of software to see if you can get it to work so you'll know more about where the problem is. I think you can download and try Reaper for free and if you try it and it works you probably won't go back;)
As for the ATR, all dynamic mics need lots of gain. You have to be really close and you need to give them most of the gain the mixer has but make sure you watch my gain staging video and instructions for podcasters thepodcastersstudio.com/gainstaging
Thanks Ray. I will give that a shoot.
Thank you Ray, nice video. What about recording the 2 stereo channels on 4 channels? Is this routing possible on the fly?
"4 in, 4 out 24bit/96khz USB 2.0 with true multichannel output to your DAW including bi-directional audio (audio in and out). This means you can connect up to four XLR microphones and input those mics into audio recording software such as Audition or Audacity with each channel of audio onto its own track. This allows you to edit each channel of audio, each microphone, independently in post production."
This is description but is it works this way? I heard USB mixer can record only stereo signal so only 2 channels... Anyone can advise?
Tnx for this great video, So it can do Multitrack recording over 4 channels. Question, will aux and FX also send out on these 4 channels? Or will fx and aux only be outputted in the main outs. So can this mixer do multitrack recording with fx..? Im not used to mixers so hope its not a stupid question.
Hi, just want to chime in. You can select to send channels 1-4 or or 1,2,aux,fx on USB via a button near the mixer's USB port.
Nice. Thanks for posting this.
👍
Thanks!
Awesome review.Thank you
Is it still?
Can the USB audio interface help me with latency when I use my USB MIDI Keyboard connected to my PC?
At 7:43.did that first source select button pop up on its own?
What would be an affordable mixer if you didn't need a multi-channel but did want to hear audio in and out in your headphones? would the Behringer XENYX X1222USB allow this?
Yes, you will be able to do this. I've used the smaller Xenyx USB mixers and they do that pretty well.
