I've had two shoulder surgeries.. (Fun fact: the singer of Sha Na Na was my surgeon) You MUST faithfully do your home exercise when they start you on physically therapy.. Best.
Get well soon Scott. I gave up bass when I was twenty something. But i decided to pick it up when I was 44, while stuck in bed healing my wounds after a motorbike accident. I made this decision after watching one of the bass related TH-cam videos, and guess what? It was one of your videos. I’ve been rocking the bass for 6 years now, starting the learning process almost from the scratch. And I couldn’t be more happy, not only because where I am now with my playing, but also because I know where I’m going. All thanks to you Sir. I owe you big time!!
54 year old SBL beginners course level 1 student from rural Queensland, Australia here. Wishing you the best. I'm stoked to hear about more TH-cam content and interviews. As someone with multiple disabilities and health issues, my ability to practice is more often than not severely limited. It's TH-cam Bass videos that keep me excited and motivated. You, IMA, and Sharon have terrific energy that is infectious. Again, wishing you the best.
I hope you recover fast Scott! Take it slow bro, don't rush it. I had a huge neck surgery 20 years ago and it still sucks having a bass on my shoulder for a whole gig. You'll learn to live with it and make the right adjustments so you can play again. Life is long so stay strong for your family first and then the SBL family second. Much love bro!
I have left shoulder pain when playing bass - why? I can play/practice only twice a day, each time for 10 minutes. Wait a tic! I injured it pulling out a tree stump 8 yrs ago in my 50s. Sucks to be old(er).
My grandmother had a full shoulder replacement under local anesthesia - she was too afraid to go under general anesthesia. She was awake for the whole thing. She went on to continue crocheting. You'll get through.
Hi Scott. I had an accident a 5 13:26 years ago. I have 11 nails and a plate on my left shoulder, product of that accident. I have been playing bass for over 50 years-I’m 75- years- old. It took some work for the rehab. I know exactly what you went through and what you’ll be going through. But as a fellow musician and a follower of yours , let me tell you you’ll recover fully. I didn’t play for around 4 months and as time went by and my rehab continued (at home) I eventually started on my 4 string electrics. A month after that, I could handle my 5 strings and a short while afterwards my upright bass which was invaluable to me for exercising my arm stretching. I wish you the best. You’ll be fine
Not being on instagram I had no clue till seeing this video. Of course you have my best wishes for healing and getting back to your life. And getting back with a renewed fervor for the bass and other aspects of your life.
Hi Scott! it’s Char from the Technique course. So glad you’re on the mend. So grateful for all that you do! And so grateful for all that is SBL. I’m loving the academy and the live classes. And very excited for the interviews to come! Please don’t rush your recovery. Yes, it does take 6 months to a year to fully heal . Yes, that sling is a pain…I slept with it for 6 weeks! Please make sure to do the follow-up exercises at home. Sending healing your way!🙏🏻
SBL Jazz Lab student here, Scott, wishing you a speedy recovery. I was super pleased when you and Simon came out with the Devine King project. More of that, please! It really is great fusion and I listen to it very regularly, still.
A friend had a similar surgery. He bought a Taylor GS Mini acoustic bass so he could keep gigging while in the sling. Take rehab seriously and you'll be back in the game in no time!
As someone who broke their clavicle in March, 6 months is about right. Wishing you a speedy recovery - keep doing the physio exercises! Future you will be forever grateful!
Had a dislocated shoulder about 20 years ago with a partial rupture of the tendon. Still get a bit of pain but nothing I can’t live with. Hasn’t stopped me playing bass though. Hope you recover fully and the pain subsides soon
Hi Scott! I had a similar surgery a year and a half ago. I am in a contemporary worship band and the only bassist. I HATED to not play, so before my surgery I bought a bass synthesizer and worked on my key board skills. I played that in our band until I recovered enough to get back to my instrument. I'm now 100% healed and feel better than I have in years. You'll be fine too, I'm sure!
I had a similar thing. Thought i'd never get back to my old self after a couple of years of misery beofre and after my surgery. Now 3 years later I forget about that injury that caused so much grief. The body is amazing and you'll heal and forget the pain. Good luck to you.
I had right shoulder recronstructive surgery in 2019 with good results. But then in 2022 I crushed my left hand and have had 4 surgeries since. (Almost lost my hand!) Needless to say, I can't play jazz guitar anymore. I did pick up a bass and can play a little with my middle two fingers. Hope you recover well!
My wife had the full shoulder surgery earlier this year. Definitely go get a “Circulating Cold Water Therapy Ice Machine” for ice therapy. You can load it up with ice and water, have someone strap the pad around your shoulder with an Ace (stretchy) wrap, and just sit back and let it do the rest. She even used it in bed early on since she was braced and wedged upright anyway, and it really cut down on the pain meds required! This is also an opportunity to do a few one-handed keyboard bass videos. I’d watch them! Good luck, hope you feel better soon. Don’t skip your PT!
it’s so incredibly inspirational how you turn around such allegedly considered set backs by accepting them and moving on from there! that within itself is a massive life lesson
I am also currently recovering from a shoulder/pec tendon surgery! I'm in a sling too. Hang in there. I heard the same thing about the 6 to 12-month recovery.
Praying for a quick recovery! You should definitely get Abraham Laboriel for an interview. He is a Legend and I haven’t heard you guys yet talk about him that much.
Like many others Scott, I too wish you well and that you will soon fully recover. I know so well what you are dealing with as my wife of 52 years also underwent complete shoulder surgery and I had to assist her with many everyday normal activities. Your full recovery will also depend on your therapy efforts... and you will fare well. Keep up the good work and I will continue applying the practical lessons, instructions, and courses received from you over the years. Get well soon Scott. Ezra
I've had 3 SHOULDER SURGERIES all from Tennis. My physical therapist was a pro wrestler named CROWBAR !!! HE WAS INCREDIBLE!!! BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR REHAB SCOTT
Get well soon Scott! I REALLY know how you feel brother. I had an old spine injury get worse in 2010, which caused me to be disabled. The injury to my spine is right between my shoulder blades, and holding my bass is extremely painful. Out of all the things I "lost" due to my injury, my connection to playing my bass, especially with my band, has been one of the hardest. Get well soon! :)
Oh boy, good luck and health. About 10 years ago I damaged my shoulder in an mountain bike accident and wound up with a frozen shoulder. I did play bass after 1 about 2 months. Full arm range took more than 1 year, cause frozen shoulder is terrible.
I broke my right hand a few months ago and didn't go to the doctor. I'm having trouble playing at the moment, myself. I think we're gonna have to go at the bass like Bill Clements, for awhile. Wishing you a solid recovery, Scott!
I busted my collarbone in a bike collision this summer. It hurt really bad, but not being able to play was maybe the worst thing about the whole thing. God speed your recovery!
I know what it takes to recover from a joint surgery I can feel the pain and mental problems you are going through 😢 My heartiest request to you scott please don't rush .... We all need you 100% recovered and get well soon dear ❤❤❤❤
Blimey 😮 Mister Master Bassman! Rest up and get better soon. We all love and appreciate what you do and give. Had my right collar bone chopped off a bit at the shoulder end to alleviate nasty pain years ago. Went great - still great. Asked the surgeon if I could play violin after the op, no problem he said. Funny, I couldn’t before 😂 (the oldies are the besties) Wishing you all the very best 👍
a few years ago, I was hanging out with my niece at my dad's house and she did a handstand in the backyard. I tried the same and heard a "crunch" in my shoulder right before I fell over in pain. I tried to ignore it until I couldn't. I had actually fractured the ball of my upper left humerus. PT sucks, but you've got to take it seriously. be good. get well. we love you.
Look after yourself and follow the program. Wishing you back to normal asap . Met you at Olympia Bass day show over ten years back and am really inspired to see how you have kept going and building
If you need to get back into playing on a gradient I can highly recommend Players Path on Scott's Bass Lessons. 14 day free trial too. Seriously; really happy to hear of the good recovery. SBL is part of my life.
Speedy recovery, Scott. I’ve been through a surgery like that, and this initial period with the shoulder immobilized and sleeping on your back is quite annoying. Be patient and resist the temptation to rush the process so as not to compromise your recovery. Take care.
Scott hope you get better soon! Glad to hear everything is going smoothly so far! I’ve played bass for 15 years, play professionally now and still don’t regret getting the lifetime membership. I love everyone involved with SBL and there’s so much passion and love for the instrument it’s so contagious! So much priceless information is stored away! Excited for 2025!! You spoil us too much 🫶
Wishing you all the best during your recovery Scott! I'm begging you to get Chris Wolstenholme for an interview, there's criminally little footage of him talking about his approach to bass playing!! x
Just seen about your shoulder. Was genuinely shocked Do! Do take care with your recovery, and don't try to rush it. (You know it makes sense!). All the best and wishing you well. Literally...
I had to have rotator cuff surgery several years ago, which necessitated having my arm immobilized for a looong time. Having said that, I did my rehab excersises religiously, treating them like a workout without overdoing it. As a result, the doctors said I healed faster than all but a handful of people in their 25+ years of experience. I met a few people who went through the same thing and they all complained of continued chronic pain. Hang in there bro! You may be surprised how fast you can get back in the groove!
Wishing you a speedy recovery Scott. I had right shoulder reconstruction some years ago after catastrophic damage. The good news: the time will come that you’ll sleep the night more easily, have range of motion with no nagging aches and pans. The bad news is - and this is from experience - you won’t be able to easily manage and balance the heavier boat anchors. And you know what that means… the dreaded short scale bass. My Guild Starfire is pounds lighter and more manageable than the Fenders. So, breathe, practice radical acceptance, and know that you can live through a few weeks with a short scale. Doctor’s orders.
I had a total left shoulder replacement in early 2022, so I understand your pain. I slept in my recliner for a month then in bed with the contraption for another month. 9 month recovery!
This video is the first I've heard of your shoulder surgery, as soon as I saw the sling I felt it in MY shoulder- I've had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders, all the while being a working bass player. As said by those before me, you MUST do the physical therapy prescribed as faithfully as your bass practicing! The only time my right shoulder barks is if I play with a pick (plectrum, excuse me) for a few songs straight so I stretch the shoulder(s) before playing, just like my thumbs and fingers. I am struck by your humility and positivity in the face of this current plight. You have affirmed to me that life is really wonderful and there are many mountains to seek and climb. I'll take your attitude to heart when I practice your SBL lessons, they've helped this self-taught bass player to heights I have previously only dreamt of. God bless ya mate!
I hope the recovery goes well for you Scott!! I tore my rotator cuff and I was lucky that I didn't get "frozen shoulder" (which I didn't even know was a thing before my injury). I'm glad that you're already feeling like you have decent range of motion! ❤❤
After my motorcycle accident, where I broke my collarbone, I can say from experience: In a month you will already feel more confident to play and do other everyday things. I wish you a speedy recovery buddy.
I had a flat rear tire at 85mph on my Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide. I had the fascinating experience of the bike tumbling over my body. All 880 lbs dry weight broke every rib on my right side. Broken Scapula(shoulder blade). Broken Collar Bone and a couple of years in a living hell of pain. My rotator cuff was torn badly and in surgery the doctor cut the rest of the cuff so he could get my acromium bone back in place. The doctor told me about that and I said “you cut my arm off!?!!” He explained that the arm, my right arm, was held in place by traction but otherwise the arm would have hit the floor. The reason I tell you this is because I am playing better now than before the injury. I’m sure you are going to recover just fine. Play a light weight bass. Don’t overdo it and you’ll be back in the saddle soon enough. I’m just outside of the Los Angeles area and I would love to buy you a beer or at least shake your hand (gently) to say thanks for your massive contribution to the elephant in the room that we call bass. Call or message me if there’s any possibility of meeting you. Be well!
I am sorry to hear about your shoulder problem, I broke my clavicle skiing, and it did impact (for a while) my ability to play bass, surf, etc. Stick to your recovery plan, don't push the envelope too much. Think of it as an investment in your long term recovery and ability to get back to 100%. I really appreciated your discussion about "mastery" of the bass. I love the instrument, but, to be honest, remain an amateur. I am an SBL student, and really appreciate and enjoy your courses as well as everything on the TH-cam channel. Get well soon, I am looking forward to more lessons and other programming. I am wishing a speedy recovery for you, and look forward to future SBL developments!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Weren't you the one who damaged his shoulder in the first place with that catapult of yours, Danny?
@@johnm2012 Couldn’t be Danny, he’s a sharpshooter and only aims below the belt
Totally read that in Danny's voice 😂
Awww, that’s so nice
Some people will do anything to get out of helping the drummer load up their van.

why do I get visions of him going 'bow, bow ba bow bow, bow ba bow bow' as the gas mask is slipped on you?
Yes, I agree, I didn't understand the need for rehab and in hindsight it really slowed down my recovery and longtime mobility.
Really? Which singer? There were several…you wrote ‘the’ singer as though there was only one.
Bowser became a surgeon?
I assume Scott Powell who is an orthopedic surgeon
Behave yourself and be a good patient, we want you 100% well whenever you get there, don't rush it

Do a video of your first time back on bass! It’ll be good to see the pros start back up!

Long time SBL member ,James Farrell NY, sorry to see you are struggling thru surgery and recovery Scott 🙏 get well soon sending best wishes 👍
Prayers for a speedy recovery. Do your rehab!!!!
