d standard is a whole step lower and gives the guitar more resonance (reverb) and allows the strings to rattle a bit more. If you're not sure, try both and see what sound you prefer (:
I learned guitar modelling Elliott Smith, so now I stay in D. I use D'adarrios, the extra thicc ones for extra tension in lower tunings, so it's not all wobbly.
Hey me too dude! I used to play in C because of bands like kyuss and sleep, but after hearing Elliott, I didn't want to play anything else. Been playing for almost everyday for 10 years and I am still playing and mastering his songs in D standard everyday!
As a solo acoustic performer, I started utilising d standard tuning after seeing Ed Sheeran in the early days with his martins in D.. it sounds so much better and also gives you more variety when playing pub songs.. who knows you might be feeling a bit sick and need to sing a step down or something it’s great
Thanks for this ! this is very helpful ! Cause i am a begginer I put the capo on the 10th fret to get the tuning correct which gives me the D standard tuning in the key of D major of D G C F A D tuning and this tuning allows me to play the cool grunge song called "Lithium" by Nirvana ! :)

Okay, I think something is wrong with my guitar and I'm too broke to take it to a store to see about getting it fixed... I hadn't played the last six years or so because I was too busy drinking myself to death. I finally quit drinking back in late July an started playing guitar again shortly after. My guitar has been in its case sitting in my closet the entire time, damn thing was still in tune. I've been playing the last few months and decided I wanted to go back down to D tuning because that's where I played mostly the last few years I was still playing with people, we were in D flat actually. I used size 11 strings for that back then. The last time I changed my strings was to go to standard tuning so I could go play with a couple guys, so I put 9's on and adjusted my tremolo to make them work. Something I had done many times over the years. A couple days ago I changed my strings from 9's to 10's an dropped from standard to D. My guitar was playing fine until I changed my strings, now my A an D strings are in tune but they sound out of tune when playing a power chord on them. I guess they're my G & C strings now but you understand. If I'm picking individual notes like playing a scale or something they sound good but playing chords isn't working now.... Ever heard of that before? I haven't it seems weird to me....
Yeah I'm hear to finally get around to learning Death riffs on my 17 year old Epiphone Les Paul studio lol that I got when I was 17.... Better late than never...

thank you for not putting an ad to slow this down for us. if you put an ad on here your video will get voted down for someone who will let us tune without BS!
I came here 10 years ago once because i found out if you have a lower register its easier to sing in D-Standard, and have been writing all my music while always deferring to this over getting a tuner because im a cheap ass.
Used by bands/artists such as Mötley Crüe, Nightwish, Pantera (425 Hz), Fu Manchu, P.O.D., Sepultura, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Insomnium, Watain, In Solitude, Agalloch, Inquisition, Drive-By Truckers, Soulfly, Holocaust, Children of Bodom (Since 1999), Symphony X, Oceansize, Death, Decrepit Birth, Dream Theater, All That Remains, Baroness, Napalm Death, Volbeat, Seether on "Country Song", Exodus, Gojira, Hammerfall (from 2009 - today), John Prine (on "Grandpa Was a Carpenter" and some other songs from 1998 to 2020), Shadows Fall, Mastodon, Ghost, Lordi, Killswitch Engage, and Kreator. Used in a vast majority of songs by musician Elliott Smith, and also in some songs by Johnny Cash (including "Ring of Fire" and his covers of "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" and "Cat's in the Cradle"). Also used in Nirvana's songs "Come as You Are", "Lithium" and "Drain You", Metallica in their songs "Sad but True", "Devil's Dance", "Sabbra Cadabra", "It's Electric", and "Whiskey in the Jar", as well some of their covers on The $5.98 E.P. - Garage Days Re-Revisited ("The Small Hours" and "Crash Course in Brain Surgery"), "Dream No More", "The Thing That Should Not Be" and in live performances of "Jump in the Fire", "The God That Failed", and "Seek & Destroy", John Lennon on "Working Class Hero", Bullet for My Valentine on several songs on Scream Aim Fire, Bob Dylan in live performances of "All Along the Watchtower" in the style of Jimi Hendrix, the Damned (on their cover of "White Rabbit"), Blink-182 in "Adam's Song", in Doug Anthony All Stars live performances, Diamond Head (on their 2020 re-recording of "It's Electric"), John Fogerty, Firehouse (on re-recorded acoustic version of "Love of a Lifetime" from 1996 album Good Acoustics and live performances since 2010), Stryper (on the album The Final Battle and live performances since 2021), Extreme (on live performances of the song "More Than Words"), Chevelle on most of Point #1 (excluding "Mia" and "Anticipation"). Megadeth used this tuning for 'Prince of Darkness' (Risk, 1999) and would switch to this tuning from E standard during concerts featuring this song in 1999 & 2000. They have also used it for all concerts since circa Fall 2012 (during the Countdown to Extinction 20th Anniversary tour) and would go on to record all new albums since 2013's Super Collider using this tuning.
Kickstart my wildside so I can shout at the devil and call Dr feelgood cuz I'm too young to fall in love because it always the same old situation ...4 girls (3 at ft Lauderdale and 1 going away mad) a rattlesnake shake, 2 slices of pie, but here I sit at home sweet home wishin I could live wire the looks that kill...so it can take to the top...and yes there is many more songs too
I’m not good with different tunings and shit, so sorry that I’m about to sound really dumb, but, I held my guitar tuner up to the speaker while each note played, and then I knew where to tune the string to just by getting the tuner to that same note, but for the 1st string, my tuner brings that up as the same D that normally the 4th string would be in for standard tuning. so it’s not as high as the note should sound. why does it do that? and what’s an easy way to tune that last string lol
Does your guitar tuner have a setting to show what Octave your notes are hitting? It sounds to me like it's registering the D note from your 1st string as D3, which is a D note but played at 3rd Octave. Your 6th should register as D2, which is at 2nd Octave down. It's just another D, except lower. Standard tuning 3rd string is tuned to D3. You need your high to be exactly one Octave higher, or 12 steps (frets) higher than D3 to D4. So I don't wanna say don't trust trust tuners at all, but it's actually more helpful to learn how to tune by ear. It's an innate ability everyone can become proficient at. If you hold down the 5th fret of the 2nd string, which should be tuned to A3 for reference, and pluck it, you can use that note as a reference point to tune your 1st string, which should again be D4 specifically. ^you can actually do this for all of the strings though. If you have a 6th tuned to D2, if you press down upon the 5th fret of the 6th string (and you are certain that it is correctly tuned), you can use that note to tune the next string down. The only exception to this rule is when you get to the 2nd string, you press down the 4th fret of the 3rd string and use THAT to tune the 2nd string, but the other strings can all be tuned by comparing its open plucked sound with the plucked sound of the plucked 5th fret of string directly beneath it. I'm not a professional, I taught myself how to play 10 years ago. Asking questions isn't dumb. We all had to ask questions at one point or another.
Behold, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. He's coming in the clouds with a double edge sword. Receive the lamb who's blood was shed for you. Your wages are death,Liars thieves adulterers blasphemeres can become new creations through the Holy Ghost. He paid the price, it is finished.
