It's crazy how Dracovish is so broken for having Fishous Rend, yet Arctovish cannot match even a fraction of its power. Truly a tragedy of the highest order.
It got banned BECAUSE it was the only legal user of the move not in spite of it. There wasn't anyone else who could use the move so it was judged as a while rather than just one broken aspect of it.

In due time, maybe the move itself would have been banned even if Basculegion didn’t get it, but before then it was just easier to judge Houndstone as a whole rather than just a single move it had

In NatDex MonoType Water Teams it has a surprisingly alright Niche as the only Fishious Rend User (since Dracovish is banned), with Chilly Reception Slowking to set up Snow and activate Slush Rush on it. For it's other Moves besides Rend I tend to run a Loaded Dice Set with Icicle Spear, Rock Blast and whatever fits the 4th Slot which is usually Psychic Fangs since Screens/Aurora Veil are extremely common. Also completely unrelated but Arctovish has a really special Place in my Heart since it was an Inside Joke between me and one of my Friends for a while for absolutely no Reason besides it looking so stoically chill if you saw the Pattern on it's Head as it's Mouth lol.

It's more likely Ferrothorn will barely hang on, but the fact that even an absolute max defense Grass type with some of the best defense ever can be one-shot at all is absolute madness.

I absolutely love the little freaks that are the gen 8 fossil pokemon, their lore is fun and the look of just straight up being incorrectly made is really charming to me
Fun story: back when SwSh came out, I tried to shiny hunt the fossils, with Arctovish being the first one I wanted. A week went by of all day shiny hunting, got nothing. A friend tried to shiny hunt it for me, got it in about 30-40 mins of attempts, and was gonna trade it to me. He ended up trading it to someone else by complete accident because of the stupid way trades are set up in the games. . . To this day, I have not attempted any of these fossils since. Thanks Gamefreak for your garbage online system :') and to that random person who got a random shiny Arctovish in like 2019/early 2020, I hope that at least you're enjoying it ❤
I remember how back before crown tundra came out arctozolt was actually in pu around the mid ranks. However, the moment crown tundra came out and it got slush rush, it got almost instantly banned from UU and got a decent niche in ou hail teams! Do wonder what that guy could do with modern snow's defense boost...
my guess is arctozolt could do quite a bit with snow giving it that 50% def boost to let take more physical hits on top of the speed boost. but as for arctovish...yeah gonna be honest i doubt it would help much
I think Arctovish can get better now that snow replaced hail. It's bulk would get even better and with Ice Body would also use the snow to heal itself. It could be a neat tank or a slow bulky attacker!
The day we get a snow warning mon with a good suicide move, Arctovish will be, not an OU staple but important enough to force consideration on ladder, where fast wins are encouraged
I've used Arctovish in draft league a few times and it's been great since it's always super cheap there. Tera fisheous rend is amazing, but that is only in natdex formats since it's not in Gen 9
He's definitely the least Evishient of the 4 frankenfossils, what 55 speed does to an Ice type. Even it's decent bulk becomes bad because of Ice being so bad defensively. It needing weather or trick room to function properly on offense also really hurts. It's not good enough to build around and not fast enough to feature without building around. It might be a little better in doubles/VGC because of the meta game being so much less entry hazard focused and more weather-centric, but it didn't get across the Paldean border so even that's not happening.
It's so perfectly on-brand for gamefreak to make a move that relies on moving first, then giving it to a slow ice type that's slow for arbitrary reasons.
Furthermore, it is also on brand to also make one Ice-type just good enough to fight in OU despite basically having the same attributes and game plan. I swear, Paldea’s lands are so hostile all the Paldean-native Ice types are great.

I used to play a ton of hail in gen 8 VGC due to all the weather teams going around. 4x resists glacial lance, and can outspeed timid 252 Calyrex Shadow in hail and OHKOs with life orb too. Had a really hard time with Kyogre teams but that’s just what happens when you use smth that off meta lol. Lurantis will always be my ride or die but I miss my silly affront to god very much :(
So sad the fossils have an interesting concept on paper but can’t not look ugly and most people hate their designs. That aside though, it is interesting how upside down head doesn’t do as well as the other 3 especially with hail.
If only it had Swift Swim instead of Slush Rush... Rain-boosted Fishious Rend plus the Speed boost from Swift Swim would put it on par with the other fossils
It’s saying something when Fishious Rend, one of the most busted moves in the history of Pokémon can’t make you good. Imagine if mega sharpedo or drednaw got it. I know turtles don’t have gills, but the synergy would be stupid. Maybe arctovish would have been better with snow mechanics.
They should even every gen 8 fossil speed to 65 and nerf their signature moves to 1.5 boost. And now Dracofush is not that busted while Arctofish would find a niche. Idk about Zolt guys
Arctovish Fun TCG Facts: there have been two different Arctovish cards in the hustory of the card game, both of which received an alternate higher-rarity print. However, both cards are completely garbage from a competitive standpoint, so it has never seen play, even in the most casual of formats. Maybe someday this freaky little dude will get its place in the spotlight (doubtful, though, since it usually takes some kind of weird mechanic to get Fossil pokemon into play, so almost all good Fossil cards have a way to cheat themselves out)

Pokerogue saves arctovish by giving it strong jaw as a passive, which really hits with slush rush and fishious red/ice jaw
