I'm a grills off guy too. I've had my matched pair of 4312s since new in 1983. I still have the original invoice, brochure and packaging. Note my serial numbers are not sequential either. I originally had these in my recording studio, and now use them as part of my home entertainment system. Note these were perfect for mastering sound in a flat studio control room back in the day, but I think there are better speakers for boosting bass in today's media rooms. Or, for the best of both worlds, add a subwoofer as I did. These are gorgeous to look at and still sound wonderful after almost 40 years.
I still have my pair from 1984 when I got them while in the United States Army serving at Fort Sheridan Illinois. I still listen to these and I use them for karaoke and they are awesome. Definitely deeper base than my LS 50s but also twice the size and, somewhere around 80 pounds each. So heavy with so much copper around the whippers. Just an amazing speaker!
I bought my pair of 4312's also while in the US Army, while stationed in West Germany in 85'. My serial numbers are well apart as it appears they just grab a left and a right speaker and ship them. In any case still used as my primary set and still sound great.
I have a pair of these I bought new in 1986. They are in perfect working condition but were moved around a lot while I was in the Navy, so they have a few dings and scratches. A roommate many years ago put a potted plant on top of one of the speakers and it has a water ring on it (#@$% it!). Cosmetics aside, they sound as good today as they did 35 years ago.
I just purchased a set and can’t find the original manual or brochure. I was also wondering about my serial numbers not matching, the wood looks exactly the same. I am trying to get some seat time with them and play around with the tone controls. So far I love them. What years were these produced?
I inherited a pair of these from my father and tragically blew the woofers while trying to hook up to my home theatre. Does anyone have some recommendations for replacement parts?
I like them without the covers on, but I would leave on in the studio as designed and keep dirt and dust off as much as possible. As far as sequential serial numbers....I have a set purchased at the same time, a little older than these even, if fantastic shape (better than these if you can believe it - 37199 & 42602), and as you can see, numbers are not sequential and purchased at the same time! So, you can mix and match any pair as you said, overdesigned and so close, any two will do!!

I have a pair of these in mint condition. I bought them about 20 years ago. I keep the grills on.
Flat wound voice coils..I love mine.. real natural Alnico magnets.push them mine love it..never smoked them ever.
I'm running them with 2 d-76a's strapped mono. Sp14 all audio research. My neighbors hate me

As far as sequential serial numbers....I have a set purchased at the same time, a little older than these even, if fantastic shape (better than these if you can believe it - 37199 & 42602), and as you can see, numbers are not sequential and purchased at the same time! So, you can mix and match any pair as you said, overdesigned and so close, any two will do!!
Grills off, I highly doubt they would handle 120 volts wall current though.
