    8 bit home micro coder (Z80 based micros) John Mullins, never saw any of the coin op assets from Sega, everything was done from scratch, with coin op used as a reference.
    ZX Spectrum was lead version., the Amstrad CPC with MSX as an afterthought.
    Once Spectrum version was finished, CPC version 85% complete and MSX version around 100% complete as it was just a case of linking in different libraries and replacing misc graphics and sound assets.

    Just been playing this on the Turbo Grafx Express using an Everdrive, Aside from the Dreamcast Saturn and 3ds I'd say this is the best port, Now if this was 1990 I would have been blown away playing this on a handheld back then, Some lucky kids would have been happy!

      @@RetroCore That's typical Sega, Never does what the fans ask for, Until recently at least. 2 games I would have liked to have seen that were long rumoured, Power Drift on Megadrive or Mega CD (Pref CD) and Daytona USA on 32X! Oh and also Destruction Derby 2 on the Saturn would have been sweet

      Also try PC Engine versions of Afterburner and Out Run. They were the best home conversions on hardware contemporaneous with the arcade original, plus they're both HuCards so could work in the Turbo Express!

    That axis-tilting is why Power Drift is one of the _very_ few driving games that made me a little bit motion-sick, and I _loved_ it! The axis-tilting is fookin' _essential._ If it doesn't have axis tilt, *_it's just not Power Drift!_*
    And the greatest sin of the Spectrum/Sinclair ZX _and_ MSX versions? All the drivers and all the cars look the _same._ If I'm making some other driver eat my dust, I like to know who that driver is! Is it Harry? Is it Lucy, or Michael, or Jason, or Jeronnimo? _I can't frickin' tell!_ I only know that it's not Emily because I _always_ played Emily. Emily is the sweetness! If they ever remaster Power Drift, Emily should be its mascot. ^_^

      Retro Core Yes. I completely missed arcade era and videos like yours, help to discover old gems.
      Considering that I nearly lost my jaw after seeing special effects in Contra 3, I'd say I would have been completely paralyzed for several minutes from awesomeness of this game. Seriously, it's really cool. And your videos are very cool as well.
      Also, I was surprised at the quality of the Commodore 64 port. I always thought of C64 as a lowly machine that is capable of only some really primitive stuff and all of sudden, a some ports of arcade games look really nice and even playable.
      At the same time, I am puzzled by the quality of Amiga ports - I had an impression that Amiga was a very powerful machine which was capable of awesome graphics and music and suddenly most of the arcade ports are outright bad. It's like complete reverse of stuff that I knew. It's nice.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In general the C64 is reasonable at arcade ports but in the case of the Amiga they are awful 90%of the time.

    The arcade version was brutal hard clearly designed to get them coins. I had (still have ) the C64 version which is a great game. Actually, i have both for emulators but prefer the C64 for gameplay and nostalgia.

    No, no, trying to play it with the Joystick on ST and Amiga does not make it more controllable at all! Time ago, the italian version of the review magazine C+VG asked the programmer ZZKJ why the 16 bit versions of Power Drift were so slow and uncontrollable. ZZKJ answered:"When I told Activision that porting all that graphics would have created slowdowns and confusion, they answered me that it was not important, and that I had to put on the screen as many cars as possible at the same time. I accomplished the orders..."

      Yakumo1975 I have a genuine copy of this game from the PowerHits Sports compilation CD so I can confirm this game runs correctly on Windows 8.
      First, get this custom build of DOSBox from here: ykhwong.x-y.net/
      There's a reason for this that I will get to last.
      Second, use a fixed cycle of 3000.
      Third, run PDCONFIG.EXE in the game's directory so the sound and video settings are as good as they can be.
      Fourth and optional for awesome music from this game. Acquire the MT32_CONTROL.ROM and MT32_PCM.ROM files somewhere. These are the program ROM and the sound ROM needed for Roland MT-32 emulation in the custom build of DOSBox. Put these files in the same directory as the custom build of DOSBox. Select "MT-32" as your MIDI device in DOSBox under Sound. Run PDCONFIG.EXE and select "ROLAND MT-32/LAPC-1" as your audio device.
      Then be blown away by how good it sounds. Try this on other game games (e.g. Sierra and Westwood games) that support Roland MT-32 music and you'll never go back to Adlib/Sound Blaster FM music again.
      There is also MUNT, an MT-32 emulator, if you prefer to use the official DOSBox build. You will need to set that up individually and manually connect DOSBox to MUNT yourself, but you do get a cool simulated LED display of the Roland MT-32 module that sometimes shows custom messages from the game.

  • @wishusknight3009
    @wishusknight3009 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ZX Spectrum uses upto about 40% of its cpu cycles to generate sound. And can completely consume it when multiple voices are being synthesized. As for the dos port. If you are using DosBox, for some games the performance settings can give the game a false sense of clock based instruction counters. It would be interesting to try on real PC hardware to see if it is any different. Most programmers learned by 1991 to not program to a specific cpu level, but use actual real time counters. Maybe this game doesn't do that. Wing commander 1 and 2 are other examples that are too fast on anything more than a 386 dx25.

  • @Robciomixxnfs
    @Robciomixxnfs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, the MSDOS appears to be running way too fast, just look at the timer
    And I have a strong impression as if C64 and MSDOS versions were made by the same people, they are extremely similar to each other

    So if I get the Japanese Saturn version of this game which I’m highly considering, is it close enough to being arcade perfect to where you would have to take a magnifying glass to your CRT TV to see the differences ?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. The way the track moves isn't Arcade perfect. The Dreamcast version is though. But if you couldn't tell the difference from this video, then what does it matter? As long as you are happy then that's important.

      Retro Core I have one more question retro, I’ve been currently playing Neo Geo battle coliseum for my Japanese PS2, and I’ve been searching all over the net for an answer to this question but can’t find any
      In the settings menu of Neo geo battle coliseum you can change the screen to normal or soft, what’s the difference between the two, Someone said the soft option makes the TV screen look identical to the Sammy atomous wave arcade version screen

    What would be your choice between the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast versions?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, probably the Dreamcast since that is basically they arcade version running in a higher resolution. The Saturn version is really nice however the graphics aren't quite as sharp as the DC version plus it sort of cheats when it comes to the tilting axis. The whole screen tilts rather than the actual track.

    Uk press strikes again 🙄
    C. C. I, joint C64/Amiga review, no issues with C64 one, but the Amiga review...
    Points out jerky frame rate, making it nigh on impossible to see what's going on at times, so you have to often guess which direction to go, it's way too easy, doesn't make full use of Amiga capabilities, plays worse than the C64 version.
    So pretty ropey, yet pulls in a 72% score.
