For me it has always come down to what you plan to do with it, ideally you'd have both but if you can on stretch to one then I'd look at what seasons you plan to fish and whether you plan on being mobile or stationary. Brolly pros: Faster and more convenient to put up/down promoting mobile angling. Will protect you from mild wind and rain. Can be fined down to save weight (leave groundsheet/front panel/storm poles at home if you're just out for the day). Cons: Not particularly stable in big winds Less room inside Bivvy pros: Can tolerate all but the most extreme of weather. Spacious inside Cons: Less convenient to put up/down Heavier/bulkier to transport Personally, as a fairly mobile angler who prefers functionality over comfort on shorter sessions and does the majority of their angling from spring to autumn I lean towards a brolly most of the time but I do also own a pramhood bivvy for winter fishing or if there is a big storm coming in. One thing I'd definitely want on either option would be some kind of mozzy front because those little buggers will drive you mad on summer nights otherwise, fortunately a lot of products are starting to become more modular meaning you can buy the standard brolly and then buy a mozzy front later rather than having to stump up for the whole system in one go just to leave half of the kit gathering dust in the shed.
Got a couple of tracker pram hoods and they are very good but i never use them anymore. Hate having to take excessive gear on trips as im normally only 1 or 2 days at a time. Even for a week you can make a brolly functional if you're willing to compromise on space inside. I've seen myslef piking for a week in - 10°c with a brolly and proper sleeping bag
Is the brolly self supporting without the poles? Or do you have to have all the poles in it? I’ve got a scope brolly that Self supports (no poles needed) and looking for a replacement. Great video guys 👍🏻👍🏻
Good video nice and informative.. I would suggest maybe clearing up exactly what 10.000hh equates to in actual weather . So people are not using ambiguous measurements scales . I'm sure they could Google it but I think it would make a great video for the less informed and new anglers ... you know what is hydrostatic head?... why are there different shanks on hooks and when and why to use them .? .. the difference between fluorocarbon and monofilament.?. the list goes on and on ..shelf life vs freezer baits .. just in terminal tackle you could make tones of videos
Never had a bivvy so maybe I can't really comment. I have never had a problem with my brolly system. I don't get the more robust bit Luke, I treat mine right and I'm five years further along with it zero problems. Been caught in some horrendous weather, hail storms cutting visibility down to near zero for prolonged times, and some stupid wind speeds (had to get the tie down ropes out more than once). The space is fine I don't need acres I use the space I have efficiently. I can carry it in my rod bag along with five rods (3 up 2 down) and landing net poles. My rod bag and baggage all go behind the bed chair too. I would probably get lost in a bivvy lol.
