Resource guarding is not a "dominance" issue - it's an evolutionarily advantageous behaviour that dogs don't necessarily need anymore, but it is still an instinct. You're right that we shouldn't "allow" it in the home as it is dangerous but punishing it will again only suppress the behaviour and almost guarantee a worse bite with no warning. There are much better ways to deal with it.

Looks more like they don't know who the leader is. It's YOUR bone, you give it to whoever, but it is YOURS. You're supposed to give attention and food to the higher-ranking dog first, and then the lower ranking, or else they have disputes... I knew a lady who had to euthanize a bunch of her dogs because she kept giving attention to the "poor little underdogs" instead of the higher ranking ones. Of course the higher ranking ones are going to beat the crap out of the lower ranking ones...

You're missing the point. It was an analogy. When we punish a dog for growling, we suppress the growl (the warning to a bite). Over time, the dog learns that growling doesn't work, so he jumps straight to the bite. Punishment suppresses behaviours but does not change the emotional reason the dog is reacting. Punishment makes US feel better but doesn't teach the dog much at all.
