Wild Barberry ID, Uses/Benefits, Harvesting, Processing, and Preparation.

Matthew Hunter describes how to use the desert barberry bush(Berberis haematocarpa) for medicine. The inner yellow bark and root bark of this plant have many medicinal uses and benefits. The alkaloid berberine, found in the roots and bark of barberry gives it its yellow color, which is anti inflammatory, hepatic, and antimicrobial against a wide array of pathogenic fungi, bateria, and viruses. Japanese barberry(Berberis vulgaris and Berberis thunbergii) are cousins to this plant, and are the most common species used in herbal medicine. Oregon grape(Mahonia aquifolium), a similar species, grows in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest, and is also used medicinally. Oregon grape is a small, low growing subshrub. Many species of barberry also have edible berries.

Barberry is an excellent cure for PCOS and is as effective as Metformin in lowering blood sugar for diabetics. It also has hypotensive properties and can lower LDL cholesterol levels. If that's not enough, it is also highly effective for helping people with insulin resistance shed those difficult to lose pounds. It's such an incredibly useful medicinal plant that it's sad that from 1918 until the late 1970's, millions of Barberry plants (B. vulgaris but undoubtedly many other varieties as well since identification is often difficult) were intentionally destroyed due to the fact that the plant is a host for wheat stem rust which was devastating wheat and barley crops. This eradication campaign was carried out primarily in the mid-western wheat and barley producing states as far north as Minnesota. For this reason, growing certain varieties of Barberry in these states is still banned. So if you decide to plant Barberry in your yard, just make sure to plant an approved variety which is not a host to wheat stem rust. Also some states ban Barberry since they consider it invasive (Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania).

Great content. Thank you! You mentioned you’re “not the dosage man”? Can you overdose doing this method? Can you share something about dosage with me? I’m curious because I just learned about the benefits of Japanese barberry, which grows on my property in abundance and this would be some thing I would like to add to my apothecary.

Add about 2 teaspoons of bark or wood to a quart of water. Japanese barberry has berberine in the wood itself, so you can use that too. I just let taste be my guide. It gets pretty bitter the stronger you make it.

begin at a low dosage and get to know the plant directly. your body and the plant will guide you to an appropriate dosage if given the opportunity to do so. you only need to slow down enough to hear the guidance.
