My favourite sword ever. I have a sharp, and a blunt for HEMA It’s my primary practice sword. I only made a few mods… - Made a different handle that’s more like a knife/messer for better edge alignment feedback. Bent the thumb ring up slightly so it aligned with my thumb joint. Cold blued the entire thing. I’ll eventually change the edge angle on the sharp for the reasons you mentioned.
As someone who edits, I really liked the editing and cuts you've made in this one - the memey bits flow in really nicely and the timing is great. Also, a pet peeve of mine is audio normalisation and the video sounds great. Awesome work!
a well done town guard style sidesword imo is king of single hands. cutty, thrusty, safe hands, all kinds of grip options, solid reach, they look fucking badass and elegant.
Ditto. Cut-and-thrust arming sword style blade with a swept or pappenheimer hilt is classy AF *and* functional AF. Hard to beat that combo. I’ve seen a few variants on the “swept-hilt sidesword” theme with longer hand-and-a-half length hilts, which could give even more functionality and usage options, at the cost of being somewhat more cumbersome to wear or potentially increasing mass and reducing the control/leverage the pommel gives for single-hand use.
Yeaaaah, me and my club were some of the unfortunate recipients of that bad steel batch. We had gotten the sparring safe dussacks and they all broke within 4 weeks
I would be super interested to see what that serpent sword could do if it were re-profiled. It's such a unique blade shape, and it would also be an awesome before and after video demonstrating your point on blade geometry.
I really liked the editing in this video, a lot of the jokes really landed well. I can't put my finger on exactly what's different but it gave me a similar feeling to a few other channels. More of this could potentially help with your algorithm woes.
Oh boy I can't wait for the Skaltana? The Skian? The Skao? The Skalhander???? The Skaber? THE SKALSACK?!!! 😂😂😂😂 As always, I genuinely love your breakdowns and analysis. Your content is great
I love this design. There was this book about swords and other weapons that we used when playing RPG, and my bard would use a sword like this that was depicted.
Beginner fencing... I lunged & slid forward, instead of rearranging continuous footing; I slid forward in earnest with every lunge: this maneuver piqued Maestros attention. He wanted a piece of the action, but I could beat his foil such that my tip scorpion-whipped his knuckles before straightening into his chest. Rounds later this maneuver cost him three scores, & he lost his shit; started stabbing, like he'd recoup his points as a teacher: he was out-of-his-mind amidst witnessing just two special-moves. man's not ready for this
Very nice intro, I had a lot of fun watching it! It's a small thing, but it adds a lot to the video, for me: basically, it makes me get into the meat of the video with an upbeat attitude.
7:54 "I'm a professional idiot, and not to be imitated." It's that energy that makes your videos so enjoyable. I always learn something and it is always interesting, but your delivery is superb. I understand that each weapon is designed for certain roles, opponents, countermeasures, etc. Can a dussack, or other false-edged sabre-like weapons, realistically stab hard enough to penetrate the armors of its time? By that I mean in the heat of combat. DO you really have to wind up to get a tip of this size to penetrate gambeson and is there time to do so? I know nothing at all about this but am curious.
Great vid! Magnificent blade! Long, skinny falchion! Sphincter clench? Nah. Lower back clench, from imagining the abrupt stop of the upper body twist, yes. OOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! LOL!
I vaguely remember in boilermaking we were made to file down pretty much every sharp edge at every stage of the process unless a part required a very well defined edge.
2:52 saying you 'can't really' do a certain cut while demonstrating the ability to do so lol i know there's caviats to all of this but i just found it somewhat funny. love your content bro
Omg that serpent sword looks so interesting. Are you gonna do a full video on it soon? Like are there any historical swords like that? Ceremonial or whatever, or actually used in real fighting...?
I think the 3 "teeth", which can be found in several places on the sword hilt, are mostly decorative. This is because the knuckle guard doesn't connect to the pommell, which would make it stronger and hence more functional, but instead ends in the teeth. Also, I feel the teeth could be better shaped to catch and hold an opponent's blade, if that was indeed their purpose.
Ditto. And ever since I first saw the Elmslie typology, I've wanted to know what the function of that … sort of … cutout thing on the back is. But I don't even know what to call it to try to Google up an answer.
@@billberg1264 I'd guess the thicker portion near the tip is to increase follow through near the sweet spot without thickening the blade edgewise. While the other may be there to bring the point of balance closer to the hilt for handling. We see other types of this blade category can have one or the other, so they are probably functional. I'd guess the gap in this type may be the result of not making it too heavy, or filling the gap may negate the effect of the thicken portion near the hilt.
Question about those upturned quillions: why don’t swords with knuckle bows usually have another quillion on the knuckle side? I understand that it’s not necessary to protect the hand, but isn’t there a worry about the blade skating past the knuckle bow and hitting something important? Or at a minimum, wouldn’t it allow you to better bind up your opponent’s blade?
Man, I have had my eye on this piece for a minute and I'm so glad Skall did a review before I had the money saved up and pulled the trigger 😮 I love everything about this sword, the designs, the lines, the sharpened false edge..But the Edge grind being non-functional for a blade of this type is total deal killer.. This is a blade profile that should be capable of disemboweling a man and still mortally wounding one wearing an arming doublet or gambeson most likely.. Lanskinect -please- make a more functional version of this beautiful weapon! Stiffen the blade a bit, and start that grind closer to the spine in a much more gradual taper down to the edge, maybe even hollow grind it. It will cut like a -Beast-
I am a pure theoretic. Museum pieces are usually shorter. In my oppinion the Dussak ( Dusägge) is between Langem/ Großen Messer and later Hirschfänger.
Edge grind...had a similar issue with one of those zombie killer APOC katanas..."sharp" but the edge grind was 45 degrees (per side!). I couldn't believe it. A sharp steel box would have the same edge. Tried to cut a water bottle and it was like a line drive to 2nd base. It was cheap, so I re-profiled the edge with a file and it cuts now.
That blade shape is much more characteristic of a Pala or Kilij. Dussak like that are rare. Maybe you say that though, I'm just halfway through the video haha
i have drawings of almost exactly that from back when i was in highschool. slight curve to the main cutting edge, only the top quarter of the back edge is sharp with an s curved guard. made a model out of pine once too
I feel like a lot of Cheaper/less professional blades have this second bevel profile, just because it's easier to do grind that with a machine or jig. I'e bought a Sax blade once with pretty much the same grind, and that was definitely ground with a wheel. Saw that when grinding a proper bevel on a flat stone, it was definitely concave ground.
Interestingly enough, in Polish we use the same term ( _tasak_ ) for this type of bladed weapon as well as an ordinary... meat cleaver, which you can see butchers use. It also sounds strangely familiar... dusack/tasak.
"is it a nice sword? potentially. is it a nice mace? surprisingly..."
Good way to spend a day snowed in. Watching one of my favorite sword TH-camrs talking about an interesting weapon I never heard of before
"Not gonna show my naked leg"
Why are we still here? Just to suffer?
"I'm in grey [sweatpants] so you can see better."
👀
Feels like an intermediate between a basket hilt and a more common handguard
Sort of, yeah. Almost a half basket.
"You see it doesn't-"
*hard cut to Skall who is now very short*
"Guys I fucked up"
3:38 And then there's Matt who's practically turned it into an art form.

FINALLY, I've seen this sword in the backround and have always wanted to see a video on it.
Also, I love dussacks.
Dussacks are pretty awesome. I have a Czech dussack.
It's weird, but a dussack is considered a practice sword. I don't know why, as it is perfect doing the job of ending him rightly.
@@davis.fourohfour ..... what?

You seemed way more yourself this video skal, love seeing you enjoy yourself. Great video as always
Your beard is looking really nice.
Great lighting too, got those eyes shining really nicely
skin's looking good too, great job Skal
Agreed, whatever you’re doing is working Skal!

@@baconsarny-geddon8298 hell yeah bro
Love your review style! The puns are one of the reasons why i love your videos!😁
One of your better videos! The editing, humor, love for the sword and intelligent breakdown of its qualities were all there, man. Really enjoyed this

I like your energy in this video its very positive, gives off good vibes
I've been considering buying this particular blade for a while, thank you for your review skal!
I know Landsknecht Emporium had a real problem with steel suppliers for their dussacks last year.
Yeaaaah, me and my club were some of the unfortunate recipients of that bad steel batch. We had gotten the sparring safe dussacks and they all broke within 4 weeks
3:07 I'll take your word for it, my only experience with doing a squinting cut is when I'm chopping onions
Haha
Heh, I chuckled.
Made me laugh! Thanks Skall I needed that, and now I need a new sword!
What a lovely false edge, im a sucker for single handed swords with flase edges :)
The guard is beautiful too, maybe i just like swords lol...
One of the swords I've wanted to see for ages great video
I would be super interested to see what that serpent sword could do if it were re-profiled. It's such a unique blade shape, and it would also be an awesome before and after video demonstrating your point on blade geometry.
I'd like to see that too. I'm curious to see if the blade shape itself affects the cutting power, especially in comparison with regular wavy blades
I really liked the editing in this video, a lot of the jokes really landed well. I can't put my finger on exactly what's different but it gave me a similar feeling to a few other channels. More of this could potentially help with your algorithm woes.

Great video, fun addition to the discussion on sharpness in the previous
Didn't slash the Boulder in half. Fake swordmaster, Wouldn't recommend.
Hella fake.
Nah, look at the rock. That flat top CLEARLY implies he cut that shit in twain
I was like, "How is he going slash through that boulder? The thumbnail wasn't a katana!"
"KAtanA wOulD HAvE DoNE iT"
What are you talking about? He did. Obviously he was just moving too fast for the naked eye to see.

Great video as always Skall and cheers from across the pond in southern Sweden 🇸🇪🙏
Man, new vibes in this video. Frankly, love it! Happy Skal makes videos I like to watch
Great peace of art. Who ever created this, good job!
Dang, Skall. Hitting us with those baby blues: not that I'm complaining
I can totally see that it's a sharp angle in the thumb ring. That's something I'd want to take a round file to to break the edge.

I always liked dussacks but they were always a little short for my taste, but this, this hits the spot
thanks for the review mate
Great video! I hadn't seen that type of sword before.
That was a fun one, Skall on top of his game 🧐
I prefer the look of those single piece dussacks where the knuckle guard is just an extended tang curved upward.

A very handsome sword. Unfortunate that it doesn’t cut too well. I would think the blunt, sparring blade will work well for its intended purpose.

Love the gloves! Too many videos are sword cutting with no gloves, probably an issue.

I love raised yelmens, but I'm still trying to understand the step at the forte. Is it just for strength or can it act as a schilt?
It might, although it's a bit small for that. Could just be a stylistic touch.
I assume its to keep the blade from rattling around in the scabbard.
it's got a really nice looking yelman, too bad the edge is iffy
overall it doesn't seem terrible though, it just needs work
