My Girlfriend is blind and this could be a very freaking nice option to let her play VR. We did try skyrim VR and half life alyx because the directional sounds works pretty good but it requier alot of "me" involve to explain the surrounding. With haptics feedbacks (as much as possible), she could ultimatly go trough a game with me only text to speech quests and such. now, lot of you might be well.. could be useless anyway since she cant see the 3d effect of the googles. Hmmm yeah but still, she autonomously games at some games, she just finished her master at university and she is now working. oh and of course, she won 2nd place in 2019 at the world championship of blind fencing. After all that, what i meant is that she is not about to give up on having a descent VR experience and YOU SIR, you are on your way to make this possible so much faster then we ever expected. thanks alot! im following this closely and oh yeah!, happy new year! ;)

I bet it wouldn't even be too hard to get text to speech to work for the menus, if you haven't already got that figured out. There is also a mod already out there that uses text to speech to voice the player, and it even has voice recognition so you could speak for the dialogue instead of trying to figure out which one is the one you want to use.

This needs to happen. If this actually works, which it seems like it does, then I hope you get the attention of Valve or something so that they can fund development on this, get the best parts possible for reliability, performance quality, and shrink it down a bit, and then bring this to market as a consumer device.
I'm not sure if you've innovated beyond what some of the big companies have played around with in their labs, but if you've managed to develop a working prototype that is most importantly very low cost with honestly a great start on the size of it too, then this has massive potential for actually becoming a legit consumer device at a consumer price point.
Maybe not $60 if you team up with some company, but even if it were $300 by the end of it with their help and ability to source the right components and materials and R&D the crap out of it, for high quality consumer haptic gloves, the index controllers cost that much. It's entirely possible and you would be the cause for what changes VR forever.
Keep doing what you're doing man and make these the best haptic gloves at the lowest price point possible.
Just please try to get Valve's attention, or any company that has the ability to take make the most out of it and bring this to consumers! (preferably Valve because...it's Valve, and they literally own steamvr lol). It would be a dream to see this become reality in a consumer device..

This is awesome! The only thing holding me back is how cumbersome it looks, and how it seems like it might be a pain to get off and on, as well as durability. Prototype 5 should totally be optimizing and streamlining the glove, maybe giving it a shell to hide all the electronics and hold them in place better, making it so the glove can be slipped on and off without worry of breaking anything, and making it more compact, etc. Most of all, wireless would be a HUGE added perk. Having a big usb b cable is pretty clunky. To me, this project looks like it is ready to move out of prototype and ready to move onto a more user friendly development scheme. This isn't me saying you should do it this way or that way, it is just my suggestions and ideas. It is your project fully and you are free to do whatever you want with it. This is such an awesome project and I am very much looking forward to the future of it!

As someone who has been intrigued in the world of virtual reality, Brooke turning into their personas to be recorded and live streamed in the internet, and worlds where u use literal physical movements, I would love to see gloves work so well and become affordable to look like they are holding and taking drinks of something, or my idea of using a “hand cam” with a controller to show my hand movements onto a virtual controller.

You're going to see a lot of comments like this, but I'm leaving it anyway. Awesome work! I saw the LTT video and immediately came over and subbed! I've got a suggestion that I think will be extremely simple to integrate, but you might have heard it before. Vibration motors. There are flat disk shaped vibration motors and I think it would give just enough feedback to the player when they shoot a gun, or better yet, when they pull the trigger and they're out of ammo, the lack of a vibration would be a really nice touch. Just a thought. Awesome work! I really want to make these and I don't even have a VR headset 😅

    1. Holy crap these look like irl Russels
    2. We definitely need more entry-level tech in the VR space, and doubly so for stuff that isn't Facebook-monopolised
    3. My main question with these is how they work with guns, can it be configured so that a simulated gun can stop each finger at a precise point around its virtual grip, and can the trigger be simulated with resistance and possibly a break?
    4. Pronouns would be nice as you have a really neutral presentation and I wanna make sure I respect that if its what youre going for

VR haptic gloves (to feel VR items), with precise finger tracking (even when cameras can't see them) & the ability to simulate 8 buttons by touching finger tips to thumb, would take VR to the next level with universal appeal. I have a top of the range RTX4090 PC but I hate game controllers, with visual finger tracking being too unreliable, so I won't buy VR gear until gloves like that are available.i really hope you can help these gloves become a reality, and if so, sign me up for some. :)

Maybe the motors and bulky electronics could be pulled back to the forearms with a strap and pad so it looks like a power glove, it would also free up space for the controller/vive tracker on the top of your hand, with a raised stand so the strings can pass under. Mounting the servo assembly on the forearm would also let you have an even more rigid platform for haptics

A idea from someone who routinely has half decent ideas. :p
Create a bracer to mount your servos to, as this would give you a lot more real estate for mounting and freeing up space on your hands for other forms of haptics. To make it so you have full wrist movement you could have a relatively low hardness plastic tube and a cable of some sort that can handle compressive forces.
The plastic tube needs only to guide the cable from bracer to glove and resist the compressive force induced by the servo's restricting the movement of fingers. The cable could in theory be string, but could be made into something a bit more rigid in case you wanted some force feed back from the backs of fingers.
The bracer could also be used for force feed back on wrists with 4 more servo's, maybe 3 if the kinematics play nice.
Having adjustable mounts on the bracer (some leeway on the physical mount and maybe multiple mounting locations for the mounts) could also be used to accommodate multiple arm sizes and tuning the kinematics on a per person basis.

    • @OneToastieboy
      @OneToastieboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That might be a more seamless experience, those "slip" treadmills look good for walking but as soon as you run it's hard for it to keep up as you have no inertial movement like on a traditional treadmill
Not too sure he'll got for a traditional one tho as it would go against the idea of keeping it budget friendly and acessiable to lots of people

They still look clunky, but over time I think they will shrink and become more encased as more prototypes are made. It is pretty impressive though, and maybe future iterations will track side to side movement as well as each finger’s digit. I think that high speed servos could reduce the size by measuring the resistance of each string rather than using a springed potentiometer. That would also make force feedback a lot smoother and more directly controlled. It might be possible to take a normal motor and turn it into a servo by using some microcontrollers to measure the resistance which should give you more control in a smaller form factor. The beefier the motors the better. You could definitely benefit from direct control over the fingers by emulating squish physics and fluid resistance. Maybe you could make a whole jacket so that your entire arm feels resistance when you put your hand in water in Skyrim or when you pound against the wall in Boneworks. The whole idea is to make immersion extend beyond just hands so that the subtle movements of something can be detected when you least expect it. Elevating the sense of awareness and presence in a game is vital for suspense and brushing up against a wall in a quiet scene when you’re looking for an enemy would be one way to make someone get on edge. It’s essentially the zone x10. After a couple of hours in Skyrim VR I lose sense of reality, now imagine wearing a force feedback jacket. The games would definitely need mods to work with it, but it would be so worth it. I can’t wait to see where all this takes us, I bet some companies will pop up trying to do the same thing.

Thought 1. Can might be able to move the motors and other mechanical parts back to the upper arm or even back by using a "braking wire" similar to a "Bowden Tube" filement feeder. It would be much lighter and if the cable is inelastic enough, it would work just as well.
Thought 2. You can emulate a soft subject with the servos. But you would need a load sensor to detect the force.

So weird. I actually sketched out plans for something extremely similar to this a few days ago. In mine it used cables though instead of string because it seems like if you're grabbing something like a sword, you might be inclined to squeeze extremely hard and break the string. I had ideas to use though so you could hold a virtual mouse even without a headset on and click mouse buttons that weren't there and get the same sensation. If you haven't already tested it out I also though using two to type on a keyboard would be a cool, practical and legitimate way to test the feel and accuracy of the gloves. This is incredibly cool, you should try and take this to get funded somehow. File patents as well. Variations of This technology will take us up to the point we jack into VR.

I hope this guy's innovation on that doesn't get ripped off by some big company. Would be cool if Valve contacted him to make a premium version with Valve standards and looks

I have an idea for a fingertip pressure haptic. It’s full magnetic and requires 2 analog inputs per fingertip, but it should be possible to tell the difference between wood and metal synthetically. This assumes that you have 20 units installed(2 per finger) and have already built prototype 4. It’s going to take me a year to work out the bugs, but I don’t see them costing $80 for a full set of 20.
