I love this movie. It is in my top 10 favorite movies. I remember watching the moon walk on TV in 1969 and the thing that always brings tears to my eyes is the montage of people around the world watching the Monn walk and hearing Neil Armstrong's words "That's one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind". So many people, nations across the globe all watching and hoping for the same result...a safe and successful landing on the moon and watching those astronauts successfully walking on it. It is one of the few times in recorded history when we the people of Earth were all in sync and experiencing the wonder and humbling thought of what humans can accomplish, especially when we work together rather than against each other. Whether person to person or nation to nation we are better when we work and support each other.

I have watched it many times, always makes me proud. Love the 70's music as I grew up as a teen then. I get teary eyed whenever NASA does something great like it did today. The helicopter on Mars...

This is one of my favorite films. I've recommended it to so many people. I've seen representations of the moon landing countless times, but only this film caused me to tear up watching it. It absolutely captures the landing as a great human achievement that ennobles all of us and points to what we can accomplish if we work together.

One of the best parts of the movies is when the band thinks the theme to "Hawaii 5-0" is the American national anthem -- because it should be!

It's definitely worth getting the dvd guys. This gem has a huge Special Features section about the making of the film, the Dish, footage of the events leading to the landing - including JFKs speeches (we choose to go to the moon... -) - and the landing itself plus lots of bac kground info. It is why I still buy dvds, to learn even a little of why and how the movie got made. You don't get any of this in the cinema, sadly, and this tendency to include less and less is accelerating. Why? So, buy the dvd and enjoy the whole lot, including All the Special Features. You know it makes sense. You'll have something to treasure that you'll return to again and again...

As an Australian, I thank you for such a brilliant and honest review of a movie that had a huge impact on me when I first saw it on the big screen here in Australia in 2000. Really glad to hear this little movie had such a positive effect on you after 9/11. Although I never got to the see the footage of the actual moon landing in 1969 (was born the following year), it still gives me an emotional response every time. If you like a good Aussie movie, I recommend also 'Charlie And Boots' starring Paul Hogan and Shane Jacobsen, you'll have a good laugh and it's as Aussie as you can possibly get.As we say here in Australia..thanks mate!!

Very nice heartfelt review of a very nice heartfelt movie. Glad it bought you some some light at a very dark time. Just watched it again after many years and certainly appreciated it a lot more now that I'm a bit older. Great little gem to watch with friends and family. :)

It is a testimony to this film, which I only saw recently, that I now feel a sort of affinity with Parkes, and of course the old girl herself.
A real 'feel good' film if ever there was one.

this is one of the greatest american appreciation films i've come across and deservedly so . america lead the charge here and all the rest helped as we were able . i'd even go so far as to say ,everytime the american government fucks up and pisses every body off ,to get back in everybody's good graces ,they should buy this movie and share it around ,[they'd save them heaps of money on spin gurus ] so we can feel all recapture the awe, respect ,admiration warm and fuzzy feeling that we all have for the states but too often gets buried.

Maybe I'm biased being Australian, but awesome movie. Just wish that Rob Sitch didn't change things from the Australian releases of his films to cater to the American market

I saw it right when it came out in a theatre in Brisbane, Australia, November 2000, with Lisa Pownall, a girl I met on a chatroom a couple of years earlier, she in Australia, me in Virginia, and it was totally fucking awesome. Repeat Houston, totally fucking awesome.

The Australian posters were far more cool than the American ones. I can see why many people skipped it if that’s what they saw.

It’s fiction but it is not ‘highly fictionised’. The key points are essentially true.
