    My mom and oldest son decided to get chickens in the spring. They stopped doing anything for them. But I bonded with them big time. In turn they have bonded huge with me. I've always loved animals. Rescued them of all types. They are my girls and I love them. Not for their eggs cuz I don't really like eggs. But they are awesome to be around!

      They really are! I don’t think that’s one of the first things people think about when thinking about chickens.. but they really are so awesome! Not just for eggs!

    If you have a neighbor that's not happy with your chickens, just give them a dozen of eggs. That's real currency these days

    Chickens are so worth it to me, but maybe not for everyone. I like knowing what I'm feeding my girls so I also know what's in my eggs. Grow/raise your own groceries! You'll be healthier and happier! Plus they are so freaking cute ❤️

    What does your wife feed the crows?.. we’ve had an unfortunate hawk attack , which killed one of our hens.
    I’ve also seen some crows dive bomb the hawk when it came back!
    I’d love to make friends with the crows🤞

      It took quite a long time, but she started out with some cat treats, hot dogs, things like that. That got expensive so now it’s dry cat food and then some treats here and there. Once they actually realized she was leaving food for them they started to come back every single day waiting. If she doesn’t bring the food out when they think she’s supposed to they will caw like crazy outside our front door 😂.
      When you leave the food, make eye contact with them and talk to them. We do a lot of “hey birds! Come eat! Heeeey birds!” And even if they aren’t outside when we go out there they will come when they hear that!

    I was surprised that it doesn't appear to be a limit on how many chickens we can have or rules on the structure except it must be enclosed. And no roosters. Which is great for me because I'm getting 15. I honestly don't want that many because I want to keep cost down. I'm thinking about selling some of them when they come.

    Exceptional video my friend! I needed to watch this soooo badly 😂. I need to make the calls that you were referencing to see if it’s even legal first. I have a small backyard garden/orchard and would LOVE to have at least (4) chickens but my homework needs to be done first. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and stay blessed. Crows are great, we feed them peanuts in the morning. We have the same going on with a hawk in our yard
    I want peeps right now. I am currently doing my research, I love birds. We have always kept our animals for a long time!

  • @TMZDDZ

    This was a very informative video! We are considering chickens, so that's why I watched. A few questions: 1. Are your chickens always within an enclosure, or do they freely run around the yard? And would it affect their health negatively if they weren't running around in the grass? I ask because we do have hawks in the area, and I wouldn't want to have to watch them constantly.
    2. Does it matter what their house is made out of? Resin, I think they are, like you have, sheds are expensive! We bought a metal shed last year for garden tools and it was more affordable. Would metal work? We "could" make one out of wood, but that would be time consuming to build. I have also seen people use "hoop tunnels", kind of like green houses, for their chickens.
    3. How do you kill a chicken when it's life is over? That would be the most difficult part. :(

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good questions!
      We do let them out to roam around, but they primarily stay within the run. If we are outside hanging out we let them out but if we aren’t there to be with them we keep them inside.
      You’ll notice some really awesome orange yolks if they are let out to free range and eat bugs and whatever else they can find, but they do just fine if they aren’t out. A lot of people keep chickens within a run at all times!
      As for coop material.. metal may be really hard to keep cool in the summers and warm in the winters but that’s about the only consideration you’ll need to look at. Whatever you build it out of just make sure you can keep the temperature relatively regulated inside of the coop!
      We have never killed any of ours. Once they get older they will die naturally. What we normally do is once they do die we take them and bury them under the garden!

      @TMZDDZ ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WhitepepperFarmshomestead this is really GREAT advice, and I appreciate you taking time out of your day to help! I did not consider the "temperature" of a metal coop. I want to take really good care of my animals, once I get them. I'm going to take things slow and not get any chickens until I have everything set up as it should be. Thank you!

    I feed mine every day in smaller feeders as to not tempt the rodents but my neighbor has a 5" pipe with a j on the end that stands about 4 foot tall that he fills with feed for his chickens. Lasts a week or more.

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! Does that pipe keep the rodents out?? I’ve seen people using those before.
      Luckily we don’t have too big of an issue here with mice. We have a couple here and there but between the cats and the chickens they do a pretty good job taking care of them. Our next door neighbors were a goat dairy farm and when they were in business it was worse. Since they shut down we have noticed a pretty big drop in the mice around!

    • @vamountainman2512
      @vamountainman2512 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhitepepperFarmshomestead nope, the pipe feeds the rats the same as the chickens unfortunately but I suppose if one were to cap it off before bed, it could resolve such an issue.
