I think John Cazale gave his greatest performance in "The Godfather: Part II" (1974). He should have been given an Oscar nomination for that film in my opinion.

I believe they were roommates when they were both young struggling actors in NYC. That was so touching.
Pacino is to old and jaded to tear up, which makes his show of emotion even more poignant

In real life John Cazale and Meryl Streep were dating when they made The Deer Hunter. He died while they were a couple, if he lived they probably would of been married.
Haven't seen The Conversation, but I've seen the other four movies he was in. Criminally underrated actor, and apparently to this day has the best resume in Hollywood history (100% of his films getting nominated for Best Picture).
I strongly recommend you watch The Conversation.

I think a lot of men can relate to Fredo's character. Overlooked , looked down on and not favoured by their father. Cazale did it so well.
Yes, Fredo felt despised but maybe he shouldn't, Michael was just trying to protect him.

Yeah, he was especially great in that scene when he's banging cocktail waitresses, two at the time, while players can't get a drink at the table.

John Cazale was so good as an actor he actually transformed himself in to a "prop". Like a table or lamp or picture on the wall. Most props are hard to remember because they should just be there. He was amazing. Once when I re-watched the Godfather series many many years ago I suddenly realized I didn't know who played Fredo and what became of that actor... When I looked it up I realized who he was, I had seen him in those three other movies but never made the connection. I mean, one should have made the connection by his face but no. What an actor.
1:57 I've always loved just how brilliantly that chair completely undercuts the character in that scene. Demanding respect he won't receive while the audience can't even take him fully seriously as he bounces up and down. I'd never really thought of how actively involved in a scene "background" props could be before that
It's a brilliant moment. Apparently, that chair just happened to be on set, and Cazale realized how perfectly suited to his character it's low back and bounciness were
This is one of my all-time favorite acting moments ... I was literally just now lying in bed after a night of insomnia, thinking about this scene. I remember being blown away the first time I saw it. Every actor I've known would have been up, pacing, aggressive, chewing the scenery. He was so brilliant.

Even in Godfather III, you don’t see Fredo, but his presence is felt, and mourned. Vito? Tom? Sonny? Not so much. But Fredo WAS STILL THERE. That is a great on-screen tactician.

I have watched The Godfather Parts I and II 4 times. Each time I had an entirely different perspective on each of the characters and the movie as a whole. The first was when I was about 16 years old. I identified mostly with Michael and thought of him as a heroic protagonist in a dramatic Mafia film. I thought of Fredo as a jealous, weak, cowardly brother who had betrayed his family. The most recent time was a few months ago with my wife (it was her first time). Watching it with her completely changed my views on Michael and Fredo. She viewed Michael with disdain at the man that he had become (similar to Kate). Near the end of part II when he had sent Fredo to his death she said "your Father would be disappointed with you." That's the visceral effect that John Cazale's Fredo had on her. Michael had betrayed Fredo and the family; Fredo paid for it in blood but Michael would be haunted by it for the rest of his life. Powerful performances by stalwart actors.
If memory serves me correctly, Fredo betrayed Michael to Johnny Ola and Roth for some undisclosed reward. That's why he received the kiss of death from Michael after he drunkenly slipped out that he met Roth, inadvertently admitting that he lied to Michael's face when Fredo told him that he hadn't. Less sympathy for Fredo there, personally. Despite Fredo's betrayal, Michael's hands will never be clean. He still has to deal with the fact that he killed one of his own brothers. It's difficult to say whether or not their father really wouldn't have "dealt" with a family traitor in the same way that Michael did.
I watched both so many tomes I forgot to count and John Cazal was a damn good actor. Damn good

John Cazale was one of the greatest actors ever. He should get more respect. His characters got more recognition simply because he was such a great actor, period!
It haunts me where he could've gone creatively. John Cazale's artistic depth was the ocean, and all the mysteries that lived in it.

John Cazale is an actor for all the ages to remember. A master at his craft.
I've been preaching the Gospel of Cazale for over 40 years. But with just 5 supporting film roles in the 1970s, he was fated to be just a footnote. Cazale's filmography is the property of those who really cherished his work, especially his co-workers. May we all have such a legacy.

I never got extremely into the Godfather movies(but love Goodfellas), but I can tell you Cazale's performance in Dog Day Afternoon demonstrates his acting skills. It's almost surreal how good his performance is. Like what was said, you cant even tell he's acting!
Thank you for the great video. I am 34 now. unbeknownst to me i have seen all of his movies already when i was 16 or 17. So after seing so many movies since then i always wondered why i never saw him in anything else. I knew that he died shortly after "Deer Hunter" but i thought that such a great actor should've been in way more movies. He wasn't and that baffles me. On the bright side i always knew that he was John Cazale, i knews his name, since i was a big movie buff even in my teens. He was great and as you've said: You see the characters and not him.
As a kid in the ‘70s, I was always very aware of his amazing credits.

The most underrated actor of out time. Al and John clicked when they starred in the movie together. Same with Bob in the Deer Hunter. His acting abilities were natural. He needed no directions.
Cazal is the ultimate acting legend in a way. Was never in a bad movie.

My god this is tragic and so unbelievably sad. I had no idea who this masterful actor was. I always knew him only as Fredo like most of us. Only 5 films and then just gone forever. In honor of John Cazale I will make it my business to track down the other 4 movies and enjoy every minute of his brilliant performances. Thank you so much for this content. I think the best compliment an actor can get is to be called a Chameleon.
All 5 films he acted in were arguably 5/5 - A perfect filmography, albeit brief. If he had lived another 30 years he would be up there with there with the best.

Why would he ever need to star in any more than five masterpieces even if he had he lived longer. Starring in one masterpiece is an astounding achievement but no less than 5 is simply ace.

I was 13 when The Godfather Part I came out, and I knew everyone's name but Cazale's. After Part II, I knew who he was, and after Dog Day, he became someone I expected to see in the top films of the time. But after the Deer Hunter, I could never forget him, his performances, or his name. He was without doubt, one of our greatest actors.
He was great in both Godfather movies, but you are so right about Dog Day. His ability to not be 'just' Fredo was amazing.

He was an incredible character actor that we all miss and feel cheated not knowing what he would become.
I am from England & I always had seen john Cazale in what were at the time referred to as great movies. I really liked him & I think the British audience did to. Even if we honestly didn't know who his name was apart from the characters he so skilfully played. I think that in itself is a testament to his wonderful, subtle acting & what must have been to those who knew him, an endearing personality that will permeate throughout their lives & ours forever - thank you John & God bless!
Seeing Pacino have to compose himself when speaking of John is so sad. You can see as he begins to remember the dreams he decides it is just for him and John. You can see he had a true friendship and admiration of John. And by all means ask any of us here and we will all know that is a picture of John Cazale one of the most brilliant actors ever. And as others have said. We all missed out on amazing performances. Yet we still have 5 amazing examples of his amazing abilities.
I gave my ex wife five examples of me in the form of kids and they all turned out to be duds. I was firing the BS then. By firing I mean I should have wiped those off my knuckles and gave another specimen that was a lot better
I remember my mom and dad talking about this actor and I remember instantly liking him when I'd see him on screen. Later on when I REALLY got into filmmaking around 11 I started doing as much research on the guy as possible. Wonderful play actor. He came from theater. And hearing how he passed broke my heart. I love Meryl Streep for threatening the production of deer hunter shed quit if they fired John, which they wanted to do because the cancer was literally taking him and he was sick.

@@barry4649 I was different. I was making movie shorts as a kid, trying to write scripts for my friends so at 11 I was breaking down characters and plots and stuff. They figured it was better letting me watch these films than going out and joining gangs or something. Of course they were also just lazy crappy parents so.... Lazy crappy parents? As a kid of the seventies, we weren't watched over like hawks, ran around the town and country before 11 and watched whatever we felt like....movies would play on the tv and we would get engrossed until realizing it was The Exorcist or Carrie...or Star Wars. ..into the 80s. We would be horrified and not sleep for weeks or just laugh it off as not real. Parents would get upset but it would be too late. On Thanksgiving each year the network would play DELIVERANCE on our main station. The first time we all thought it was a Thanksgiving movie...."Deliverance from evil...etc." And then the rape scene went by and none of us knew what it meant. Parents would say, "Don't worry it's not real. It's just a movie."
Parental guidance back then for all of us was, "Don't worry, it's just a movie. It's not real." That was the extent of the parental guidance. We survived. Mostly. Lots of nightmares. And then more education came about with ratings and such. Many people just don't know the effects of tv other than it may scare you or give you bad dreams. Sadly.
Tvs would just be in the basement or be used to babysit us and we would just watch whatever. Our tvs were still black and white and mostly fuzzy. So we could barely tell what was happening. We had to hold the antenna to get better reception. Our tvs were not high definition. I think we got colour in the late 70s or so. Anyways, as time went on more education helped.
In fact, Friday night was horror night and parents would give us popcorn, pizza, and pop to watch Squirm or Food of the Gods...etc. It was for fun! Around 11 years old for sure or younger even.

Why are people so soft?
Many people are asking the same questions from all sides.
Acceptance doesn't mean you can't JOKE, have fun, or be less serious. Some people from all sides just want to laugh again and maybe even make fun of each other again in a polite way or even a dark way. Are people ready for comedians or whatever to "cross the line"? I think a lot of people don't care. They just get upset if a specific person in the audience was targeted. And the joke drags out on hurting them directly. The issue is....that's where a lot of comedy gold exists. Lol. We all have a button they can push too far. Lol. Sometimes people find it funny to watch someone get all upset in the audience. But, I think comedians will figure it out and bring back a whole new line of work. It's happening already.
Anyways.
Talking is better than fighting.
People just gotta talk it over. Or they are not meant for comedy halls. Comedy is a special, magical thing to witness. And then you go home and think about why the comedian "got you thinking". They are usually planning quite the intelligent trip. And showing the world what they sound and look like on the daily. Lol.
I remember reading about Cazale and the completion insurance for The Deer Hunter. Meryl Streep was singled out as the prime advocate for him. They knew he was dying but they went to bat for him. A fitting tribute for an amazing actor.
I love John. When he's on the screen with all these major stars, you can't take your eyes off him

My daughter noticed him in Dog Day Afternoon a year ago and liked him even more than Al Pacino. We have only recently become big fans of his. I wish he was still with us, who knows what other great films he would have been cast in.

I remember when they announced John's death here in the UK. At the time I was a young kid and was only vaguely aware of who he was because my aunt loved the Godfather. Only when I was older that I then began to know and appreciate his incredible work. John Cazale we lost you too soon.

If I had to name 1 scene where you forget you are watching acting and it just becomes real, it would be Johns "I want respect " scene in Godfather 2 , the way his voice cracks with emotion at the right moment is genius.

I, personally, have always loved John Cazale's work, but it's funny. I never thought about whether or not he was mad bcuz he didn't even get nominated for an award. I always thought, well, not thought, exactly -- felt -- that he was above such things or something. Bcuz he was such a pure character actor. And after all, he had something much more important -- respect.

That was beautifully done, thank you. I read all about him when I rewatched the godfather at an adult age, he stood out and I didn't know who he was.
Oddly enough, it was his acting in Godfather that gave the realism. Brando was larger than life, Duvall was the explainer. Pacino was the groomed one. But when you look at all of Freddo’s scenes, they felt like reality.

Cool that he's been getting more recognition now, that's an awesome resume from him, and this video pays great tribute to him. Especially loved that moment where Al Pacino recalls his dreams, and John is present with him once again.
I don't know much about his story, but from where I'm standing it seems like he got overlooked because he wasn't handsome enough. His physique didn't tell you that he was a movie star. But if he'd lived on, he would've got more recognition over time.

9:33 its a small moment but a reflex action like that is hard to fake, his reaction to the gun is so genuine. His persona in GF2 was such a transformation from the other roles. He played Freydo perfectly. Great job giving him his due.

Watching Al Pacino break down over John kinda sheds a whole new context to the scene in Godfather III where he confesses to the priest that he had his brother killed and Michael Corleone breaks down during the scene.
The talent on Godfather all stated that Cazale was the best of them. Great video. Had me tearing up. I love John's work.
