NewRetroWave Drive jumpstarted the scene. Blood Dragon and Hotline Miami kept it alive. Kung Fury appears to be taking it viral. Things are going to get interesting from here on in. Oh, and yeah, the movie looks like a "must-see" as well.

Yeah, it's hard to see where it could go from here. It IS very niche. I'm predicting it won't go Top 40, but will continue to be a "thing" (just as jazz and metal now exist in perpetuity) and be an influence on the next generation of musicians. Then, in 5 years time we'll have some new artists who will bring some crappy hybrid of it to the mainstream and other artists who will bring some awesome hybrid of it into cooler circles. Music is always mutating...
As for the scene already being huge, there certainly are a lot of releases (my hard drives are full of them), but it's still a relatively obscure genre.

The best part of the movie and music video is the completely 80s look of it. And by that I mean the saturation of the colors that bleed at the borders of everything on the screen.

DarthSinistris Yup. If it didn't have that 80's look, this whole thing would have been pointless. Pretty necessary part of the puzzle. One way to get this look beyond using After Effects is to run the video through a VCR and back into the computer a few times using a convertor. I've done it plenty of times and it's very effective. Without fail you get the glitches, slight chromatic aberrations and that unique saturation.

Well, I don't speak for everyone from that generation, but my parents find his arrogance and overrated status as an 80s star a little distasteful (my mom in general considers the 80s distasteful, but my dad liked the decade well enough).
