this piece was originally supposed to be composed by Hans Zimmer, but he referred Disney to his friend Gavin because he was too busy with other projects. as much as I love Zimmer's work, he simply could not have written this as well as Gavin did. I'm a long time composer, and I agree, this is one of the best orchestral pieces written in modern time
saw the show at Epcot in 2002 with my high school marching band. we marched around the castle, and then did this show along with a couple others back home. it was the most beautiful thing i had ever seen.
Nothing makes fireworks better than immersing the viewer in an atmosphere with music. That's why Epcot has one of the best ever fireworks displays in the country!
This music, specifically the last 55 seconds, were used for a Disney World ad on the Toy Story 2 French VHS. It's been stuck in my head for over 20 years and I'm glad I finally found the full song, it's too damn epic to be wasted on a VHS commercial!
Back in 2000 this music was synchronized to the Millennium Celebration fireworks show at Epcot. The double "crash" sound (drums - then brass) in the beginning was synced to the explosion and report of fireworks. Hands down the best music to sync with fireworks
Probably the most emotional and inspiring piece of music I've ever heard. The composition was used for ABC-TV's marathon millennium coverage on New Year's Eve 1999-2000 and won Greenaway an Emmy. The piece is already out of this world, but from 8:00 to the end, it's knocked into the upper stratosphere...wow.
Everyone could remember the Great American Millennium celebration witnessed by the American Broadcasting Company together with the ARTEAR El Trece Television Network of Argentina, Rede Record and Rede Bandeirantes of Brazil, Canal Once TV of Mexico, RTL Television and ProSieben of Germany, the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation of South Korea, TV Asahi of Japan, and GMA Network of the Philippines
@@scottsimons923 Words cannot express how incredible it was. I gave up my last two years and joined the Navy because that show was the zenith of my drum corps career.
I first heard this piece at disneyworld in 2000 during their daily fireworks routine. The music was written to be easily synchronized to the fireworks. You can hear a "flash" and "report" at points in the music that's similar to the light and sound of a firework explosion.
I hate to pick a favorite piece because so much of musical literature is truly phenomenal. But this piece has always been a favorite if not my all time favorite orchestral work. ever sense I was very very young (4 when the piece premiered in the EPCOT fireworks show) I have loved this piece and as I began to further understand music I began to love it even more. The extremely intricate complexity of the technical passages coupled with the pure emotion exhibited by the sweeping melodies in the strings all leading up to a climax that gives me chills every time I hear it. Here I am 15 years later still loving this piece and still taking time now and then to sit back and enjoy one of modern music's masterpieces. I applaud you Mr. Greenaway. May this piece always be remembered long after it leaves the firework show at EPCOT (which I truly hope will not be for a very long time)
same story here dude. pretty much stole this CD from my mom when it was given to her as a birthday present :D this song never gets boring. too bad it's relatively unpopular. Never met a single person in my life who knows this song, what a shame
I recently saw this 4 times in a row a few weeks ago. This part (along with the show as a whole) was so amazing. The last time I saw got me good as I knew I will never see this show again (I live in Southern California). When the last show happens, I'll be in California listening to the show at the exact time it happens (6 PM EST) and be with it at the very end
Tell your Dad that I think the most genius part of this piece is from 1:52 to 2:04. Not that it isn't all genius, but the decreasing time signature(s), literally going from an 8 meter all the way down to 1, made my inner music geek have a heart attack. Have an awesome day!
We almost did this as our marching show my senior of high school. We decided to do The War of 1812 instead, won grand champions at all three shows that year lol. Still memories
We're playing this as part of a compilation in Wind Ensemble. Tuba part is so much fun. Sure, it's a bunch of whole notes and spontaneous time signature changes but I DON'T CARE IT'S FUN, OKAY?!?!
@CodyL211 We performed back in March. It was a really great experience to march down Main Street USA in Magic Kingdom. And, it was my first time down in Disney World, and it was great. We stayed in the All Star Music Resort, which i thought was pretty cool. My favorite ride would have to be Space Mountain!!! :D Oh and p.s.... Disney World has the BEST French-Fries!!! XD
@CodyL211 I love this song so much. We're playing part of it for marching band, but not the whole thing because our theme is 'Heaven and Earth' and this is just the earth part. But MAN- I WISH we just played this whole piece. I LOVE IT!.
Check out the Drum and Bugle Corps Cadets of Bergen County 2000 Show at the DCI Finals. They Came in first place for Doing the Marching Show. NO ONE can reproduce that on field Masterpiece. It was a shame, because they also tied with the Cavaliers that year for number one Best Show at the finals. I say this to Any marching band who wants to attempt to do this.... Good luck. Because this Show was Awesome. :D
This was my High School's marching show music for the opener. Then shostakovich's ballad, and then toccata by bach. GO MOUNTAIN RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL PRIDE OF THE WEST!
I was able to score the entire Disney Epcot Millennium Celebration CD for only 4 dollars on Amazon a few months ago... best 4 dollars I ever spent... Keep it on my ipod for driving music...
@CodyL211 lucky!!!! i have always thought this piece would make a great marching show...well if you haven't performed yet good luck! disney is the shiz!
@AngelHavenSP I second that. I've seen other drum corps try to reproduce this. I think a div 3 corps tried to do it back in 2004; an indoor percussion group tried to do it as well within that same time period as well, I recall. I don't think I've seen a marching band use it yet though. I think the poorest attempt at it was the CorpsVets in DCA. The Cadets 2000 performance will NEVER be topped, save by this, the original masterpiece.
@deadlyphantom12301 I think mine chose it that year because of the fact we were going to Disney. We did Reflections of Earth, Tapestry of Nations/Chaos, and We Go On. Tapestry was brutal! Fast movements left and right, sprinting across the field. And the sax parts had this one run of notes that were the hardest thing ever. What do you play? Or are you color guard?
Well, tell your dad he's created a classic. Also like the part from 6:00 to 6:35 that seems to foreshadow the explosion that's to come. I could see ABC using this music again if they ever got the US rights to the Olympics back. Much admiration from the Motor City...
Jasmine smith Search "Cadets 2000 Transcription" on youtube. It may be hard to read but the music is pretty close to this music since that show was based on this piece.
@CodyL211 I know-- I almost had to play flute, but at the last minute my band teacher moved me to pit (I can play both the flute and xylo) because we had three people in there. Dx Even though I don't march, it's still tiring, even for me. I mean, besides wearing yourself out physically, it's also mentally draining as well. But I can't help, once we're done learning the songs, falling in love with marching band. :'D
@xXLaceSkyXx Oh and it can get tiering marching to the first part... we had a bunch of quick halts, then very fast marching and playing... theres more to marching band then people think.. lol they think its easy!
THE BEST fireworks show out there and this piece was the reason why. Brings back all the good memories Disney has brought me.

For those who remember, in some VHS, the Walt Disney World advertising was accompanied with the ending of this amazing piece of music !
R.I.P. Illuminations 1999-2019 💔✨💔 You are missed
The Cadets did this show in 2000. Phenomenal show!!!
I marched 2nd Trumpet in that show.
@@TheRailwayDrone I’m sure that was an amazing experience.

This just reminds me of standing in epcot watching the illuminations fireworks display, it always brings back lovely family memories :)

Live from around the world, a celebration of new decade. This is ABC 2020!!!

Our band is marching to this this year!
dexturt we are doing this next year, but I graduated last year:(
I got it this year, but I got a newly published one. So it’s different, but sounds very similar.
Mine is this year ik I'm late but pretty cool what was your bands name?

I'm playing this right now in an orchestra, and by God it's got some strange but awesome rhythms to it!
Wow this brings back memories...
This piece always gives me goosebumps. There are so many great moments within it!
Live from NY and all around the world!! The Celebrate of the new Decade this is NBC 2020!!!!
Our marching band is doing this and it is so inspirational
We played this my sophmore year in marching band! Loved it!
Played this piece in 2000 when I marched Cadets.
Here in Argentina, Continental Radio (AM 590, Buenos Aires) use it as theme song of sports broadcasting.
This music is genius! Love the 7/8 ending!
I've loved this piece for a long time. I want to figure skate to it!
im going to disney in the fall for thanksgiving, i cant wait now!!

You're lying if you say EPCOT's IllumiNations didn't bring you here.
they dont play it anywhere else..... this song was made speciafically for epcot
Gabe Dunn they also, used it on ABC 2000, the program that welcomed the new millenia
+Ltresso12 ABC also use it for their 2000 election night coverage
How about a CD? Of EPCOT's IllumiNations?
my music teacher did
that 3/6 part at 4:41 gives me chills every time. Such great writing. Is there an orchestral score anywhere?
Johnny Weizenecker It'll pop up if you Google "reflections of earth score by gavin greenaway" (or sheet music).

Got to play this song and mesmeriz it

Chris O'Neil I know this was 8 years ago, but my wife taught magic of Orlando who did Chaos in 2006.
