Merry Christmas 2020 A.D., from the GB&W Live Steamers Union!! Walt,s backyard live steamer is a 4-4-0 American built in 1873 in the Sacremento Shops of the Central Pacific RR. It is built to 1:8th scale at 1&1/2" inches equals=1' foot, with 7&1/2" guage track. Walt had his backyard railroad built into the side of the hill, with a lower level. And a upper level with tunnels and bridges. But then a rain storm and landslide destroyedost of it. The loco is Number 173, and named "Lilly Belle" to honor his wife. He built the wheels in the Studio machine shop lathe with Mr. Brodie helping him, and Bob Harpur. The loco and some cars are preserved by the Los Angeles Live Steamers Club in Griffith Park, close by to the Travel town RR Museum. Also zoo and Observatory. Even more next time, Walt knows about English live steamers because his photo is holding 1860era 2-2-2 with open footplate and shiny brass dome, plus, 1950 era photo shows him in England and running 1:16th scale loco for 3/4" to 1' with 3&1/2" guage track on raised up platform. So he might know about early Thomas stories.
Great history and Merry Christmas! There was also Walt's model for Carolwood of King George V, so it's possible he did know about the Reverend's stories!
Thank you, much appreciated! This is a dear hobby of mine and now I get to enjoy, and share with you the audience, a brief catalog of the trains in Walt's cartoons
I whole-heartedly agree with you. I used the word "train" in the general sense since most are unfamiliar with the differentiation of railroad terminology between "train" and "locomotive," but thank you for noticing!
@@WaltsNephew I think, personally, its because every automobile has a single pronounced word it except the locomotive i.e car plane boat But railway machines? Lo-co

Walt Disney would be proud and amazed at what he did he deserves a lot of credit way to go appreciate your style and time at disneyworld take care best wishes to everyone. Joe
Quite right! In my "re-releases" of this compilation, I have ensured Bongo's streamlined locomotive was included as well as the other films I neglected to notice a train
I would suggest making a video about Walt's passion for boats in all he did. Steamboat Willie to start with...and think of ALL those rides at Disneyland that feature riders in a boat!
An interesting proposition! Although Mickey's boat was not Walt's first animated vessel; that honor belongs to one of the Alice Comedies. I might just take you up on that notion (as long as I can find time away from my schooling hahaha)
Mickey's choo choo gave me nightmares as a kid, I remember getting scared and waking up my parents at like, 1 AM. In fact it still disturbs me and I still try to avoid it, but here we are..
Oh my, I'm dreadfully sorry to hear that! I'll admit the first time I ever watched the cartoon I thought the engine looked mad while he was shunting in the yards, but then he started to eat his luncheon and he seemed friendlier from then on
I'm sorry, I meant no offense. Just remember that this is ink and paint on celluloid. And, most of all, don't forget that this is Mickey; he by no means wants to bring any trouble or bad tidings to any person
That's becoming one of the questions for the ages haha Frankly, it seemed unlikely, but I predict if Season 25 bombs with audiences Mattel will have no choice but to look for a buyer
Yes indeed! Albeit a little different, the animators wanted to have a little fun with Walt's new Carolwood Pacific by making it the focus for a cartoon
I think there is great potential for Pixar to do a Trains film and a chance for them to distinguish themselves from sounding too familiar to a Thomas-type storyline
Ooooo good choice! Personally, my favorite Disney film is Mary Poppins. But in relation to Hercules, my favorite scene is when they're in the town and the weird fellow comes up to them and goes, "Hey, you wanna buy a sundial?"
I do however doubt that Walt Disney himself had ever heard of Thomas the Tank Engine, at least I grew up with Thomas as well as those Disney movies. But might there come a day when his company might buy copyright to Thomas (the Tank Engine) and Friends?
Very tempting! A while back someone suggested I make a compilation about the boats and now we've got one for automobiles. Honestly, I think the one for cars may be more doable since they seem a bit more easier to find hahaha Maybe I'll work on it this summer!
I gotta admit, I've never thoroughly watched Chuggington, but I think Disney would've tackled Thomas better than HIT or the CGI era (ESPECIALLY Season 25). Regardless, Casey is a fantastic character!
What about the trains featured in live action Disney films such as _So Dear to my Heart, Pollyanna,_ or most notably _The Great Locomotive Chase?_ Or did you mainly want to focus on animated trains?
The latter is true haha This is a compilation of the trains Walt personally oversaw in his animated pictures. BUT you bring up a very good point and it is something I plan on working on: showcasing Walt's live-action trains
18:31 sorry to nitpick this but with that weight between the engine and a cowboy, he probably would be dead by now, but hey it's animation after all, everything is possible
@@baumcollcsame7871 Hahaha And that's the 2 different styles of animation that people argue about: the Easter style (rubber housing and making anything out to be possible) and the Wester style (realism to the highest degree)

How about them apples! This is a first for me; one of my guests actually watching the things I mentioned to them haha Glad you found my little research project! Come find me again the next time you come by Walt's Park!
You're right, that is a sad moment. But you see, the main reason why I could not include that sequence from "Fox and the Hound" in this compilation is because that was 1981, so Walt had no direct affiliation with that picture. But I will say the engine in there, be it a 4-4-0, Mogul or Ten-Wheeler definitely needed more on-screen time!
@@WaltsNephew wheel arrangement is a good question, I would probably think it's a 4-4-0, because of the diamond smoke stack, and it resembles one from "Lady and the Tramp" in the yard.
1:26 I wouldn’t consider a trolley to in the trains category. I mean isn’t there a big difference between them? I know they do run on tracks and everything but I not so sure about this.
GREAT engines. I think in both instances Milt Kahl was responsible for their animation (although Mary Blair created the inspiration art for the Baia train in "Three Caballeros")
Fact: Walt's animations were amazing but he didn't pay his employees fairly I felt sorry for them and in about the 1940's they went on strike refusing to work for Walt until he pays them the amount of money they wholeheartedly deserve. I actually think Walt was half good and half bad because of that.
That's more of a half fact. His viewpoint of payment rested on the amount of work and talent that went into the animation. If you were a lead doing the rough creation from your own references, you were paid well. If you were an inbetweener, inker, painter or cleanup, your animation was less because you have less strenuous work to do in your drawings. Also, if you came up with a good gag or idea for the animation, you'd get a bonus
Infact, Thomas will finally copy what Disney’s Own Sentient Locomotives did with The All Engines Go Reboot as they both did wacky stuff and Have wheels as hands and Feet.
Ooooo I like your thinking there. I think that since John Lasseter is such an admirer of Disney animation, he might've gotten the base idea for anthropomorphic automobiles from Susie!
The next major project for Walt's trains will come by the end of March (so hold on tight!)! If you'd like to see Walt's backyard railroad, check out my video on "The Carolwood Pacific," I think you'll like it
I'm thinking I will! But since there are so many films and shorts to go through I may not do it right now. However, I am currently working on a project that does include the Italian engine from Luca!
Hahaha It's true! At that time up until maybe the mid to early '30s, the style of animation was called "rubber hose" where characters and objects could have spaghetti arms that could stretch and do as many things as you wished! Then later on down the road realism was the more desired style and that is quite evident towards the middle-or-so of this compilation
Excellent question! Look up the "Virginia and Truckee Railroad" on the internet. A small but very significant railway in Nevada (mostly) and California
I must confess, I've never thought about finding all the houses in Walt's cartoons hahaha I have several projects in mind at the moment for future release so stay tuned for some good entertainment (if I do say so myself)

I've thought about it! I may do so next summer, but I've got other projects in store. So if my schedule lightens significantly, I'll do the research to find the animated trains through to modern times
Ahhh yes, a very fair point! However, this compilation is to show all the different locomotives Walt had in his cartoon from his time in film from 1923 to '66, so I couldn't do DuckTales from 1990. Sorry about that!
Considering on how Mattel is doing to the franchise, I wish Disney would buy the rights to Thomas & Friends and hopefully can be redeemed by staying true to the original source material. In fact, look at how well Winnie the Pooh is doing.
Good point! I think it would be interesting to see the Disney Co.'s take on the Railway Series. MAYBE Pixar should buy the rights and it could be their version of "Trains"
I think that the animators (most likely Ub Iwerks) found the best way to convey the character and to express a large range of emotion would be to utilize the slats of a cowcatcher as teeth and would, therefore, make sense to use as the mouth for Mickey's Choo-Choo
I mean, engine drivers in Britain almost since the dawn of the railway age have given engines personalities. Sooooo sentient engines belong to the ages hahaha

I was the only guy who didn't have to do a final presentation since I got an A both semesters in APUSH so during the finals week, for fun, I decided to put together a PowerPoint presentation to teach my fellow classmates (and my teacher) how to operate a steam locomotive. Afterwards they went "Wow, you were right. That is a bit easier than driving a car"
We watched a movie in history class. I don't remember the name but i pointed out every tank, plane , and gun we saw
Really miss Walt Disney!
Go to Disneyland, you'll find him ;)
This helped me make two disney train pictures
Wonderful!
It can’t be Disney without trains
Amen to that haha There wouldn't be a Disney without trains
It can't be Thomas without realism #GetThomasBackOnTrack
@@miscellaneoussarnian5282 Well said! Realism and following standard English railway codes are the primary premise of the original Railway Series stories. Without them, there is no sense of believability
the fact that almost all of the trains have 1 big wheel and a small 1 is incredible
Hahaha easier to animate ;)
Mickey’s Choo Choo might be Thomas’ Dad lol
Hahaha! Boy that was rich! Ya know, I think you may have a point there, seeing has how the Railway Series was 1945 and Mickey's Choo-Choo is '29, so you could be right!
A great compilation, well done!
Thank you, much appreciated! This is a dear hobby of mine and now I get to enjoy, and share with you the audience, a brief catalog of the trains in Walt's cartoons

“Mickey’s steamroller” I wouldn’t exactly call that a steam *train*, a steam locomotive yes, but not a train
I whole-heartedly agree with you. I used the word "train" in the general sense since most are unfamiliar with the differentiation of railroad terminology between "train" and "locomotive," but thank you for noticing!

Everyone here does
You can see when the trains start going from first grader looking to being more realistic in the late 1930’s
In a way yes hahaha They went from Eastern, rubber hose style animation to more Western, realism as the primary aesthetic for artistic direction

Man Walt and the Rev awdry would be good friends
I think if Awdry ever took a tour of America and managed to find Walt at the Park, I'm sure the two would've hit it off instantaneously hahaha

Mickey's choo choo gave me nightmares as a kid, I remember getting scared and waking up my parents at like, 1 AM. In fact it still disturbs me and I still try to avoid it, but here we are..
Oh my, I'm dreadfully sorry to hear that! I'll admit the first time I ever watched the cartoon I thought the engine looked mad while he was shunting in the yards, but then he started to eat his luncheon and he seemed friendlier from then on
When he ate his luncheon, it just really triggered me...There's just something about it
I'm sorry, I meant no offense. Just remember that this is ink and paint on celluloid. And, most of all, don't forget that this is Mickey; he by no means wants to bring any trouble or bad tidings to any person
I know, but I mean, we saw the inside of his mouth, and it shape shifts, I guess I just wasn't used to these type of cartoons
Ahhh gotcha
I wonder what will happen if Mattel sold the rights of Thomas to Disney
That's becoming one of the questions for the ages haha Frankly, it seemed unlikely, but I predict if Season 25 bombs with audiences Mattel will have no choice but to look for a buyer

Disney created the Cars franchise in 2006 and Planes in 2013, now wait for Trains.
I think there is great potential for Pixar to do a Trains film and a chance for them to distinguish themselves from sounding too familiar to a Thomas-type storyline
Trains are not as popular in the USA as there were before. Maybe this is why Disney will never make a Trains movie.
Great Video Buddy And I Love Trains And Disney Movies And My Favorite Disney Movie is Hercules
Ooooo good choice! Personally, my favorite Disney film is Mary Poppins. But in relation to Hercules, my favorite scene is when they're in the town and the weird fellow comes up to them and goes, "Hey, you wanna buy a sundial?"
@@WaltsNephew That's Cool And Also What Does Film Mean? (Just Curious)

@@WaltsNephew Oh Okay
I do however doubt that Walt Disney himself had ever heard of Thomas the Tank Engine, at least I grew up with Thomas as well as those Disney movies.
But might there come a day when his company might buy copyright to Thomas (the Tank Engine) and Friends?
Good question; perhaps if the Company finds the funds to save and rejuvenate the show from where it has come, maybe might breath new life into Thomas
@@WaltsNephew I'm sorry, I have autism, I'm restricted to a low English level because of it, can you simplify that more clearly than that please?

Very tempting! A while back someone suggested I make a compilation about the boats and now we've got one for automobiles. Honestly, I think the one for cars may be more doable since they seem a bit more easier to find hahaha Maybe I'll work on it this summer!
Casey Jr is my favorite train from Disney! He is so much better than the trains on that Chuggington show that they put on Disney Junior.
I gotta admit, I've never thoroughly watched Chuggington, but I think Disney would've tackled Thomas better than HIT or the CGI era (ESPECIALLY Season 25). Regardless, Casey is a fantastic character!

7:39 actually.... I’m better
Hahahahahaha That was excellent
What about the trains featured in live action Disney films such as _So Dear to my Heart, Pollyanna,_ or most notably _The Great Locomotive Chase?_ Or did you mainly want to focus on animated trains?
The latter is true haha This is a compilation of the trains Walt personally oversaw in his animated pictures. BUT you bring up a very good point and it is something I plan on working on: showcasing Walt's live-action trains
I wonder what Disney would think of Thomas the tank engine? He'd probably adore it.
I think so. Nobody seems to specifically know if he was aware of the Railway Series or not, but I think if he did me might have done something with it
Maybe you should do british engines when they appeared in any disney films live action or animation
Ooooo That's a snapping idea! Maybe I'd just do European engines to have a little more variety and substance. I'll let ya know if I decide to do that!

Yeppers! The engine that set the standard for every conventional steam locomotive made after 1829
Well that answer my question
The Fox and the Hound has a train too, but I don't blame you, because of what happened to old Chief when he got Tod on the run.
Quite true! I have the feeling the animators might have paid homage to that very same engine

1:26 I wouldn’t consider a trolley to in the trains category. I mean isn’t there a big difference between them? I know they do run on tracks and everything but I not so sure about this.
It’s a trolley
I liked the trains of the brave engineer and the three caballeros
Cool!
Thank you! I think it is so marvelous to see how large of an impact railroading had on Walt's life and how it showed in his films
@@WaltsNephew yea

Disney animating his first trains:aaahaaa lool ima make it look like it's made from rubber
What was the V & T RR? Was that of any significance? It appeared on the tender of several locomotives

we need to get a crossover with the engines of the island of sodor and all these trains
The only Disney movie is missing is duckTales movie cuz they have trains too
Ahhh yes, a very fair point!

Why is Mickey’s choo choo have its mouth as the cowcatcher
I think that the animators (most likely Ub Iwerks) found the best way to convey the character and to express a large range of emotion would be to utilize the slats of a cowcatcher as teeth and would, therefore, make sense to use as the mouth for Mickey's Choo-Choo
