  • Buying a complete BMX bike can be a real hassle. If you are in the market for a new bike watch this video where we break down the main differences in BMX bikes and why they are different.
    If you have any Questions please leave a comment
    BMX has taken a technological boost in the last decade towards providing better quality materials which has kind of changed the market of hi tensile bmx bikes. At one time, bikes with a similar "low" side description were good but other materials and manufacture processes have affordably taken hold.
    This has also made hi tensile bikes even more cheaper, since those cheaper materials are not widely used as much, you can no longer trust the quality of them. There isn't any demand for quality with those types of bikes so they don't have it anymore.

    my first bmx was high tensile steel and I learned 180, 360, barspins, grind tricks, and lots of other tricks worked fine for me

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +LinkzTV That's what they are there for but it also depends on your style... Some people bail a lot as beginners and slam their bike down into grinds before they really learn them. I couldn't ride hi tensile when I was learning because I would bend frames like candy I was so rough. For me it was more beneficial to buy one chromoly bike that would last a couple years as opposed to going through 2 & 3 hi tensile frames a year.

      My first bmx that i seriously rode was a wethepeople arcade 2014. It saw 540 s, barspins, gaps and sets too. After 5 years it only needed a rear rim replacement. Still i eventually upgraded with a better bmx aftermarket but still i ll keep the arcade for the sake of memories of what i started out woth

I have a custom kink curb. I would be happy with my bike just losing two pounds from that. Anything lower than that, I'm not going to waste the effort. The frame I am looking at is cult hawk.

      +Magfed Saint Honestly it's kind of outdated. Since you come from motocross you probably want a more study bike with sealed bearing and some chromoly in the frame material. Hi-tensile steel is not as strong as chromoly.

    I think the late 90s was the best time for BMX. BMX was thought of as just fad of the 80s and it seemed that way since it was nearly dead by 1989. but after 1995 there was a BMX renaissance. This could have been due to the rapid technological development of the mountain bike during the 90s which brought attention to all bikes in general. This along with the X Games brought on a resurging popularity of BMX. The point I was trying to make is that it seems that today you don't really have BMX bikes in the mid range that are all that great. You just have high end or cheap stuff now. Back in the late 90s a mid quality bike would have a full cromoly or aluminum alloy frame but have a one piece crank and three piece cranks were on higher end bikes. You are better off putting a one piece crank on a better quality frame than a cheap frame with a three piece just to make it look good.

    I know a shit ton more now than I used to know. The only thing you left out was the different styles of spokes and if it matters for strength? Are the plastic pedals as good as the aluminum ones? Do those metal discs that protect the hub and spokes, does that come as part of the frame?

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shaun Kelly All though you & I know what that stuff is, they are not "common" things you see in sale descriptions. I left little stuff like that out to try and not confuse parents or beginners. We plan to have more videos soon that should help...Thank you so much for your feedback!
      - To answer your questions:
      Types of spokes are not a big deal. The backbone of any strong BMX wheel is a quality rim and proper truing regardless of what spokes you have..
      With pedals it's more of a preference. I personally ride plastic after riding metal for a long time and they are similar in reliability. If you grind a lot a plastic pedal can wear down really quick though.. Metal is heavier and can knock your shins harder so it really preference...
      Those disks that protect hubs are called grind guards. They are not part of frames but they are sold and installed for hubs.. They slide over the axle or install onto the hub. We have a video that can give you a general idea of a plastic grind guard called "Merritt Tension BMX Hub Guard".

    Well hi-ten steel is pretty strong and can handle just as much as chromolly but is very heavy so when you get a light bike made of hi-ten steel it's weak so combining the two is a pretty good idea because you can use thinner chromolly tubes and thicker steel tubes for about the same weight and full chromolly is the best there is because it's durable and lightweight

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ricky spanish Very educated comment. I've been trying explain to people that Hi tensile steel can be just as strong but not when made into a lighter weight bike such as chromoly. One thing I have noticed over the years is the weld combining both metals in a partial chromoly frame crack a lot soon than you should expect.

      The BNC (Bmx News Channel) true I recently got a 2017 gt performer and the frame is half chromolly half steel it can take a beating but I'm currently looking for a better frame because the rear triangle is already bending also the only good Walmart bike was full chromolly but isn't made anymore the mongoose mode 540 was the best bike for the price but still isn't the best sry it took so long to reply I never got a notification on my phone

      +_HamFam_ Chromoly 4130 a type of steel that is currently being used in bmx for frames, handlebars, & forks.. If a sale description only says Chromoly 4130 that it is mostly likely made from mostly chromoly... The other terms you will come across in cheaper bikes is "hi tensile steel or chromoly triangle".

      +great lil cesar Building a bike is really fun. But can he pricey. Really you should just start by getting a frame. From there you can get other parts to put on it. These are my personal suggestions of what to generally buy together:
      *Frame & Bottom Bracket bearings.
      *Forks, headset bearings.
      *Stem & Handlebars.
      *Crank, Pedals & Chain

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mitya bozhko There are a ton of choices. Between all the high end bikes the ones that are most expensive are kind of gimmicks. Don't get me wrong, they are some of the best bikes out there, but their jacked up prices are because they offer the most popular/expensive parts like custom bikes.. If you don't know exactly what you want in a bike than a $1000 bike is a waste. You can pick a bike like the Kink Whip or Mongoose R120 and have a legitimate high end spec bike but with out the exclusive name brand parts which jack the price up.

    hello, im thinking of buying a bmx for street riding, and i dont know what bike to get (a bike with street riding charicteristics), if you don't mind and you seem to know a lot about bmx, is there any peticular bike you can suggest? or you can tell me what type of frame, forks, etc... are the beat for street riding? thanks

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL
      @BMXNEWSCHANNEL  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I apologize for not replying to this message. there are so many questions flooding in lately that I miss a few of them.
      For street riding you want a solid set up that won't bend or break easy.. some really good street tested brands are:
      Bone Deth
      Shadow Conspiracy
      Odyssey BMX
      S&M Bikes
      FBM Bike co
      Tree Bike co
      To have a solid street set up you need basically everything in the "high" range of this video... freecoaster is optional. When It comes to parts, the best are things like hydroforming, thicker millimeter dropouts, parts with out weight saving cut outs... Kids these days want really light bikes but street set ups are a little heavier.. Most people have aluminium sprockets but I chose solid steel as my sprocket. stronger but heavier.. Message us on Instagram as well @bmxnewschannel

    i'm a 25 year old male wanting to buy a bmx bike for the first time. i'm also 6'1 and ~250 lbs, what type of bmx should i get? i've looked on amazon and other online websites, but it seems as if most of the bmx bikes that are offered are for kids or unusable by me.

      Https://www.danscomp.com
      Https://www.albes.com
      Https://www.chainreactioncycles.com
      I suggest a full Chromoly set up. But the size bike I recommend is at least a 21" Top Tube (TT). I am the same height as you and I ride a 21. The reason why I suggest spending the extra money for a full Chromoly is because non full chromoly set ups are more for teenage beginners.. At 25 fully grown I recommend full chromoly. It will last longer.

    • @BMXNEWSCHANNEL

    So according to this list a Haro Boulevard 2016 would not be a terrible pick for a beginning bike,
    In Medium:
    Integrated Head tube
    3pc Chromoly cranks.
    Sealed Mid BB
    Sealed 9T Cassette Hub
    in Low:
    Hi Tensile Steel Frame
    Single Wall Rims
    From what I've read and seen and heard it's more or less not bad for a starter and with a relatively affordable price (£250) It's not too bad in my opinion.
    Anyone have any thoughts or comments on that? Preferably constructive ones.

    • @barelyillegal9944
      @barelyillegal9944 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haros arent horrible bikes, I started off on one personally. A tensile frame may be an issue, however its not actually a huge deal to replace, and if you can get a bike with some solid pieces (chromoly cranks, decent hub) it will work as a starting point, however if you want to be riding for a long time, its probably a good idea to look a bit more upmarket.

      +Masta Reapa Always answering questions my friend! If you are a brakeless bmx rider the "Kink SXTN Pro" is a good buy for 600 but does not offer brakes. It's basically a full signature model so it will feel like a custom bike. Our other choice would be a "Subrosa Letum Pro".. For $600 you should be able to choose a bike with sale terms similar to our "High Strength" section of the video

      If you want brakes than the "Subrosa Letum" is the better choice. It has just back brakes. 20" bmx bikes are generally harder to commute with because of a single gear and short stance. But you can raise the seat really high and feel pretty comfortable for a few miles.
