he plugged in everything under the radical into his calculator and took the square root in the end to get the 0.5. (√11.5^2-4x33=1/2)

Not a good tactic to decimalize the quadratic coefficients at the start.
Using a slightly unconventional method for solving the quadratic.
L^2-23/2*L+33 = 0.
m=23/4 d = sqrt( m^2 - 33) -> d = 1/4
and the roots are :
m-d and m+d -> 23/4 -1/4 and 23/4 + 1/4 -> (11/2 , 6 ) -> L

Follow the steps in the video to solve as follows:
w = 16 - L
Area = 60 = L(16 - L)
Solving we get 10 and 6 as the answer.

33 will become negative when youre goin to transpose
