I’m building my home from scratch with very little experience on 18 acres of raw land that I’ve worked to develop for the last two years!
This week I needed a bit of a break from the house and felled a dead tree, bucked and split wood and answered some BIG questions!
    Thanks for being here!

As a tractor owner I must say the pto is a great advantage. A rotor tiller, chipper and snowblower save me time. For digging through a tractor doesn’t cut it. Adding a backhoe with a thumb will round out your equipment.
Burning the brush in your burner make sense why waste it in brush piles. I burn a lot of my small branches in my wood stove. And yes you are correct about wood in the house, the dirt, bugs and wood chips makes for lots of sweeping and vacuuming plus the ask and smoke.

You should buy a 15+ year old Kubota. They are amazing and bullet proof. I owned one for years when I built our house. They are easy to repair by anyone if you have issue, but honestly don’t really ever fail if maintained. Get one with a front loader and then you can buy a used snow blower. I live local to you and would be happy to help you with the search as I’m a diesel mechanic and know what to look for.

Just a little trick to split by hand with an axe: if it doesn't split on first hit instead of trying to remove your axe and hit again just lift up both axe and log up (if not too heavy) and at the high point rotate the handle so that log is upward and hit the axe upper part on another log. The log gets split by its own weight falling onto the axe. It works very well.

I’m sorry that people feel the need to make negative and hateful comments .I am so impressed and think you are an inspiration. My thought would be to get a four wheel drive tractor with a bucket. You can get forks on the front for scooping brush . What I do is drag the cut trees to where I stack them then cut them up and that way I won’t have to load and unload them. The bigger trees I cut in half before I drag because I have a smaller tractor. I enjoy watching every week.

Most of us use pickup truck's to move stuff like that around. I would not go through life without a pickup truck. If possible move a splitter to your big rounds so you won't have to move them very far. Roll them on there sides to the splitter. Then load the split wood on your pickup to move the wood to where you need it.

I have a small compack tractor (25hp) with a frontloader bucket, pallet fork on the back. It also runs my woodchipper as well as the tiller. It pulls, lifts things i can never by hand, it moves 3 wheelbarrow loads at one time. The frontloader can have a snowplow. We do not get enough snow for that so no experience here. But the tree you just cut down i would have cut in 7ft sections and moved with the front forks.

Then i got a trailer style splitter with a bad motor. Pulled the locked up engine off it and now it runs off of the auxiliary on the skid steer. I can haul everything in the bucket and tow the splitter around.

Definitely invest in a sub compactor tractor with a loader. Living the way you live you need one. You just need one. You will be physically exhausted and done ina few years. You work too hard for that. Get a towable log splitter, tow to where you are splitting then load the split wood into your front bucket. Or get a small trailer and tow back, then come back for your splitter. You can get a snow blower attachment or front blade to push snow for a sub compact.

Then the cutting and splitting might be easier. Keep moving the winch as needed. Good luck to you. Thank you, and keep working.

(Gardening, saw milling, landscaping etc) This will help you in your considerations for attachments as well. My biggest advice is DO NOT make the mistake of getting an underpowered tractor the first time. 40 h.p. Is a good sweet spot for small to light duty all the way up to medium duty projects especially if you plan on lifting or dragging logs. 4x4 (MFWD) is a must along with a loader. Hope this helps! Cheers from Minnesota🇺🇸🇨🇦

Nice video, I agree, a couple is just that, and each have to share the family life and work. Good for you if you like the outside work. For the machine, I suggest a small Kabota tractor with a front bucket (to carry items) and a wood splitter pto attachement on the back. You could also purchase the snowblower attachement for winter. One do all machine. Keep up the good work.

You don't HAVE to answer anything. You are you. You share, what you are comfortable sharing.
I heard some wise words from you; "One step at a time" and "It is such a nice day today". Keep remembering those small things, and you will succeed. You get there.
Thank you for sharing you super interesting journey 👍🌞👍. Congrats on your new maul. Have a nice wood splitting party 🌞🌞🍰🎈💪💪💪.

You're doing a great job in this stage of the work. FWIW I've been burning firewood for over 20 yrs lol. My #1 machine is my Polaris 4wd ATV (2005 bought new). Plows snow, pulls small trailers and skids logs out of the woods. I use that machine 12mos. A logsplitter that tilts vertical will make rolling those big gooner logs easier. I bought a used splitter and works great for that. I have woodstove so I split smaller, but you can leave bigger cuz that boiler will burn longer with bigger pieces. Chainsaw: never should the chain touch anything but the logs. Not even snow. I cut thru maybe 80% or so, then roll the log over with a "cant bar". Then cut the remaining 20% thru off the ground. The really big base logs I tow the splitter out, tilt vertical, and split those in the woods and haul back later. Firewood work is 12mos, never stops.

Great job with your explanation on your personal choices and maintaining the relationship aspects separate from your vlog. Your husband is very important to you and your family therefore if he appears in the content, you both have fun working together, he works hard and long hours but so do you. Congratulations on pushing this message that your relationship is based on working “together to achieve your goals “.
Keep up the great content and communication

I look so forward to your videos. Thank you.
As many people have already commented, it would be nice to find something that is more than one use, a tractor would be awesome. I also thought maybe a side by side you can hook a trailer to either one for hauling wood. A tractor might be more useful with all the attachments. Maybe pick up a old four wheeler that you could hook a trailer to.
By the way, you have mentioned several times that your husband works a full-time job. Maybe people do not always pay attention. just keep doing what you’re doing and thank you again

Tractor with 4 wheel drive front bucket and 3 point hitch so you can buy impliments like rotitiler, plow, wood splitter etc. You are doing a wonderful job building a beautiful home. A bob cat would be ideally the best (with tracks) because you can do so much more with it. You got this and i ❤ watching your progress.

You can also make a block about 4 to 6 inches high and roll your log onto it. For the difficult ones you can get a splitting wedge you hammer it in and it slowly cracks the log. Take care!

I have a boiler. 80 acres of land. I decided to go with a, Can-Am outlander with a track kit and plow for winter. I skid all my logs out in winter. Here in Wis. US.
I garden, tap trees, hunt, fish, etc, etc. The Can-Am does it all.
Best wishes to you and the family

consider looking for a small 4 wheel drive tractor, with a 4 in one front bucket and a splitter with a lift on the side to raise logs for splitting. Also consider building a table at your wood furnace at "door height" make it easier to load!!!

I usually refrain from commenting especially on a women’s channel! Much respect splitting wood.
I tell ya tho, a wood stove inside is amazing. We installed mini splits big ones 2 36k btu units, and it doesn’t come close to heating as good as a wood burning stove.
You mentioned having a room to keep wood inside. I keep mine in a detached garage or a covered outside, and grab what I need for the day. Look forward to the next video!

so most log splitters have a hitch and an axle with wheels so you can bring it to the tree and split wood where ever you would like but yes you would need something to tow it to the tree say even a riding lawn mower would work but maybe not so much if you are trying to do it in the winter months
awesome work btw!! your killing it :)

When you have property definitely a pick up truck is the ideal vehicle 4 x 4, with a plough on the front for your driveway and to be able to haul all the wood that you need to haul but if you're looking for something a little bit more compact a side-by-side or UT is great. It has the towing capacity to move your wood and you can also put a snowblower or a plough on the front.

A compact tractor with a bucket and forks would be a big help and good in all seasons. Instead of a snowmobile I suggest getting a UTV - again useable all seasons. With a winch it can help pull trees out and a trailer attached for moving logs. A plow for moving snow is terrific. Get one with a cab so you are protected. Kubota RTV's are perfect for your application. Plowing wet or deep snow is no problem - I maintain about two miles of dirt road with some good hills and never have had a problem. The high capacity dump body makes moving logs, gravel, stone, etc. easy. Good luck.

I'm 70 years ol and split about 6 cords per year. Two suggestions to make your life easier. By the way, you are doing great at splitting wood. Roll the logs next to your sled, where they need to be. This allows you to. immediately keep the area clear and step sideways to split the halve logs. Get a Hookeroon so you don't have to bend over and grab the logs. It will save your back and energy. I have a custom made AXEROON, a splitting axe with a hook on the back. I never bend over to move logs and lift only small split logs. Keep it uo, you are doing great and right on the learning curve.

If anyone did a little research on the past in rural areas (pre-electricity), the women did most of the wood splitting for the home fires. The men were doing their job and the woman were taking care of the home, so there is nothing odd, historically, about what you are doing. You're right about it helping the back, as long as you stay within your limits like you seem to be doing. Impressive work and thought process.

I have a Kioti tractor, Bobcat tractors are made by Kioti. Kioti tractors are real work horses and are less money. Get as much tractor (HP) that you can afford. If you get a tractor with mid-PTO, you can put a snowblower on the front. Get it with the loader. Tractors are very versatile! Don’t get a backhoe, rent an excavator when you need to. We don’t need to know every detail about your lives, I don’t talk about mine on my TH-cam channel! People just need to be supportive! Have a great week!

Good evening Biata Your doing a awesome job at building your home and keeping up with the wood, your a smart lady and i am sure you will figure what you need it all takes time and doing the right move is important. in my area we all got quads with trailers to move wood around in winter skidoo and wood slides. some say built a shed what you got is good if you don't want to buy new lumber make it out of pallets there free and wind can blow through it drying the wood. take care and have a great week

Get a 4x4 quad then you can use that as a tow vehicle for splitter and transporting the wood or even dragging smaller trees. You can also buy a trailer to use for moving all kinds of things around the property. you can also attach a plow to it

Skid steer. They have snow thrower attachments. They have log splitter attachments. They can haul a big ass wagon full of your wood. 😉 definitely look in to solar. If you can add a big enough farm, the gov't will give incentives if you allow them to tap in. Also, small wind turbines are gaining popularity. Keep up the great work! Fist bump to the hubster. 😆

I've been watching your videos since YT suggested it 8 months ago. I LOVE how you do things. You have an interesting way of communicating... and the energy!!! Even though I'm 53 yrs. old, I want to be like you when I grow up. My wife frequently walks by when I'm watching and she's like 'Wow' look at her! I LOVED cutting down trees and splitting logs when we had a wood stove. It's one of the best feelings in the world to split a log. It physically feels good AND knowing it's saving $$$ is just icing. I didn't know it was good for the back. You are literally awesome young lady! One of the best things to watch on TH-cam if you ask me. I can't do what you do, but I can tag along while you guys. Thanks for doing this. I always look forward to your uploads!

Hi Biata, I hand split my firewood for many years and stuggled to move logs around using my pickup truck as a skidder. (Very hard on the truck). Finally I was able to afford a tractor. Works GREAT all year round. Buy as large a tractor as you can afford. I bought a Kubota L2501 which works ok, just wish I had gone a size larger. When pulling logs or moving heavy snow the extra weight would be the difference between really working the tractor vs breezing through a job. The bucket is like having a full time hired hand at your disposal. Once you have a tractor you'll find all sorts of things to do with it. I use a push blade on the back for snow. Buy only heavy, high quality implements for it too! Implements are necessary so plan ahead and include into your overall budget. Good luck and best wishes. Steve

JD 1025R would do wonders on such a small scale it would also help clear snow. I strongly recommend a larger tractor with a power down three point hitch and a cab. I also recommend a rear mounted blade, a front bucket, an auger with at least a 12 inch bit, and a rear mounted snow blower just to start. Make sure you have a trailer to move the tractor or other piece of equipment the trailer doubles as a log carrier quite often.

100% a small tractor in my mind... excellent for hauling tree, creating woodchips, attaching logsplitter(if ever), mini-digger(backhoe style), frontloader with pallet forks and SO much more.
Also, your husband is out providing for his family, and you do amazing stuff while he's away for work... what's not to like or even love about that 🙂I sure do !

As you continue with the inside of the house, you can look at the possibility of installation a wood stove with water jacket if you install correctly, you can choose whether you want to burn the wood outdoors or indoors.

You are an amazing woman. Thank you for sharing your videos and time. It is such a joy watching you complete projects and living life. I split wood by hand and I enjoy the exercise and it is such a stress reliever when you only need to worry about hitting that piece of wood. Hope you find piece and can relax soon.
Utv's are a great help around the yard and more simple to work with but a tractor is a great work horse for some of the heavy jobs. If you plan to always work in the woods away from the yard you will probably end up with both over time. 😊

Good afternoon. I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and have watched all of your videos and loved what you have done. The only thing I keep thinking is that you needed a tractor with a front bucket and backhoe to save you from renting equipment. The things that you’re step dad did in the wetlands could not have been done with a tractor but a lot of the other things you could have done. One thing I learned about splitting wood is always try to split from the bottom of the tree as the fibers are meant to hold it together from the top.
That said I can’t wait for your next video. It will be a long week.

Hi biata! for sure a tractor would be versatile enough to take care of various chores around the property, adding the attachment of multiple functions and of course the brand would be from suggestions made. Blessings

My "vote" for next machine investment would be a tractor. It'll help skid the logs out after you fell them, can use it to plow out your driveway and any other trails you want clear, and with so many other attachments available, you can do so many other tasks with it as well. Kubota is my preferred brand. And yes, also a log splitter 😁
