Varieties intended for home gardens may be better yet, but the long storage of commercial vegetables means that even these can be better than store bought. As you found with broccoli, pests can be a problem. Commercial growers commonly use pesticides for known vulnerabilities. A home grower must be watchful or use home garden grade pest controls.

For reasons of space, I grow only green onions -- a.k.a. scallions. They grow very well in small planters and you can harvest them over and over again. Just cut them three or four centimeters above the ground and they'll grow right back. I have one that is nearly a meter tall. And yes, they are ordinary store-bought green onions. My wife cut them off two centimeters above the roots. I planted them, and now we have more green onions than we can eat -- all in pots on our balcony.
yeah, i was thinking the same... you don´t need that much of an onion to grow it back. i have almost only roots (just 2 to 3 mm attatched to it) in my compost growing back. also, hope he didn´t throw away the leaves since its basically spring onions, so good for soups and stir fry!

And every year, allow some of them to go to seed to grow even more.My lettuces, grown in one liter plastic yogurt containers, are fourth generation -- each year, I allow two to go to seed. I do this with parsley, mizuna, chives and garlic chives as well. Mizuna, which adds a radish-like taste to lettuce, is particularly useful in pots. It grows like crazy and its stems are very crunchy. Its one drawback is that it takes months for the seed pods to mature. Happy Gardening. I hope to start my own channel soon.
@@scottadler seems like you'd been experimenting with couple of pot crops. i recommend you radishes (small varieties, don't know how it's called in English), it grows all year long in almost no soil (if you have a tray 0f 10 cm then you are good) and light speed, sprout super fast too, can be eaten raw (spicy) in salads, fermented in pickles or boiled (sweet) in soups... got super pretty lilac - pink flowers, usually next generations grow without problems as well. i bet you already tried with herbs (my fave is basil since it gives you lots of it in its season), microgreens and sprouts go very well for space limitated gardeners. and totally agree on saving seeds, i started many of my crops as store scraps and many of them grew well (potatoes, pumpkins, garlics, grains, tomatoes, lettuces, etc) and i had been getting better results year after year saving its seeds. good luck with your channel! pic for reference: gardenseedsmarket.com/images/watermarked/5/detailed/60/rzodkiewka-poloneza.jpg

It's actually a hereditary condition in my family. On the other hand, a Cherokee Purple gives me extreme pleasure, as does seeing ideologues hoist on their own petards. So no, I don'[t have any pot or pots on my balcony unless they're designed for containing plants. I do have oregano, however. It used to be used to cut real marijuana. I use it (sparingly) in spaghetti sauce. Cheers.

thanks i liked this. i will share my own: i cut green onions to maybe 3cm 1 inch from the root tip and then replanted them in soil in a small jar. I have been using the same green onions for over 2 years. I leave them in the window and as long as you cut them regularly and water occasionally they will last indefinitely.
