    Nigel,
    for the sake of your health,
    wear a mask while handling bonsai soil.
    That dust really hurts your respiratory tract in the long run.
    Holding your breath does not really protect you from breathing dust.

    Got this video recommended a year later, real shame this tree didn't end up making it. Hopefully, you can get another giant tree in your collection. Still it was fun to watch this again. I really do seem to like watching trees get harvested for bonsai, it really gets your imagination going with what you may be able to accomplish and how many years it will take. The first potting of a wild tree is always exciting and hopeful.

      Yes, it was so close to making it, but it just didn't, too much root pruning by me! I'll try again, I have two Yews in the front garden to dig up.

    With such a large heavy tree, I don't mean to sound critical, but you missed possibly the most important aspect of potting up collected material. Securing it tightly to the pot/soil. With such a light substrate that heavy tree will surely move about as it settles in to the pot, right at the same time that it is trying to reestablish new fine roots. It would've been simple to screw some rings into the inside base of that pot and tie the tree down securely, and some more around the top outer edge to hold it tight from above. After growing it for so long in the ground surely you'd want to give that yew every chance to survive?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, it is planted deeply and is kept out of the wind so it shouldn't move at all.

      I rarely use cut paste, only on some trees that dry out very quickly. I have read that for most trees it can promote rotting under the paste and create a good place for insects to live. Here is a discussion on this subject, some like to use paste and others don't.

    hi nigel. iam new to bonsai and find all of this aspect of growing trees in small pots amazing that is the the tree, the pots, the soil mix, training with or with out wire, color of pots, shape of the pots, front or back of the tree which will be seen by many, watering when and when not to, all together amazing. i do agree with a couple of your other comments from followers is please wear the many dust masks that are out there. i have watched your vid on making bonsai soil in your back garden which you used these 2 mixes with 2 others but the same thing...dust was every were. did you cut the back of your hand on this vid could see a bit of blood.

      Thank you Keith, I was very careful not to breath in the dust, but it would be a good idea to wear a good mask.

    Great video and huge tree looks good!
    I got 7 very smal Yew trees about a month ago from the nursery. They were having new growth already so i left them in their nursery containers. I was surprised how soft they feel.
    I want to make a forest of them. What will be the best time to plant them together? And should I bare root them then?
    Thanks for the great video.
    Titus

      I would wait until next spring and re pot just before the new growth comes out. My tree is behind most others because of it's cool dark location.

    Color and lighting looking good Nigel! That new camera is paying off. Edit: Can you not just use a hose to spray off the roots when you have a chunkier clay soil stuck in them?

    • @Nhoj31neirbo47
      @Nhoj31neirbo47 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have also been wondering why Nigel does not use a sharp spray from a hose to remove the old soil from roots. I would think it would make the job easier, quicker and also damage the roots less.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a hose for the outside at this time, Spraying off the soil is a good safe way to clean the roots!

    @NigelSaunders, Do you apply some treatment to the wood before you use it as a container or what kind of wood do you recommend to use for it?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just used the natural wood, it will only last about 4 years before it rots away. I don't recommend using any wood finish, it's best just to use the the wood and as it rots, the roots will grow into it.

    Big tree big work! Wow, that's going to need some big updates! ;) On a side note, I noticed I have the same root rake, or pretty close, as you! It happens to be here at my computer for some odd reason. I showed everyone, my kids, my husband, my pets!!! All I got was blank stares... O.o They just don't get it, I have the SAME root rake! My rat, Dobby, ran over and sniffed it, then shrugged like "That's not food, what ya want from me?" .... sigh.. the root rake.... it's the same... oh well... :P

    I understand you use the clip and grow method for the most part, at what point do you clip, how do you know to just let it grow. Now that it’s warmer out do you go back and check if some need more cutting or not? Thanks sir.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always let the tree grow with vigor before cutting it back, usually this means 6 to 8 pairs of leaves on the branch. With some of the coniferous trees, you can tell the vigor of the tree by the number of new shoots in spring and the strength of the growth. If the tree is vigorous then the tree can be pinched back, if it is not, then I leave the new growth alone until the tree is growing strongly.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My wife uses it, she mixes it into her potting soil, I find it hard to hydrate all by itself. I think the surface tension of water makes it hard to get between the small particles..

    I drill holes in my training boxes to allow for wire to hold the base of the tree... how you manage to get your trees to stand without wire is one of the reasons I watch your videos. Love your natural, no wire, clip and grow methods keep up the great work Nigel the garden is looking good. How is that giant green house you got coming along?

      I do use pine bark if it is available, but it is very hard to get in the right size. Sphagnum moss isn't sold in my area.

    I have a question if you were to clip a large tree like a bonsai slowly and slowly would it start to get smaller and then would you be able to put it inside your house after so long

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be possible, you would have to reduce the root size as well as the top of the tree. You wouldn't be able to make the trunk any smaller in diameter, so it would always be a large tree.

  • @hectordehesa2118

    Mr Nigel, I just purchased 2 junipers from Home Depot, is it too late in the year to pot them in bonsai soil and training pot?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as you don't do any root pruning and are careful with the roots, they should re pot fine. You will have to mist them and keep the trees out of the full sun until they show signs of new growth.

    • @hectordehesa2118
      @hectordehesa2118 5 ปีที่แล้ว
