    Thank you for making this Dr. Bonevac. What book would you recommend me to read to understand Philo's philosophical thoughts?

    • @PhiloofAlexandria
      @PhiloofAlexandria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s a good article on Philo at plato.stanford.edu/entries/philo/
      You can find his works here: www.earlyjewishwritings.com/philo.html
      I especially recommend: On the Creation; Concerning Noah’s Work as a Planter; and, for his presentation of skeptical arguments, On Drunkenness.

    Thank you Dr. Bonevac, I really appreciate the quality material.
    May I ask, will you ever look at and make a video on Islamic philosophy, on personalities like ibn arabi, mulla sadra, etc etc?

      That’s a great idea. I have edited volumes that include Islamic philosophers, and would love to do it!

    Very interesting. I'm convinced though that all the concepts of Plato's forms and ideals are beginning to be explained by current understanding of cognitive neuroscience, i.e. the computational brain. Probably no need to invoke the supernatural.

    Seems pretty close to Spinoza's thought regarding world and mind.

    History reveals that Philo's ideas influenced certain people from the second century to the 16th century. He was treated as a brother in Christ, and even a bishop in the church until certain scholars argued (17th century) that Philo was a Platonist and never a Christian.

    Can’t say I’ve read any Philo. His ideas don’t seem too different from Berkeley’s idealism. Are they basically the same or significantly different?

    • @PhiloofAlexandria
      @PhiloofAlexandria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Philo isn’t an idealist; for him, to be is not merely to be perceived.

    • @enfomy
      @enfomy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhiloofAlexandria but they do both believe we exist in the mind of god, it seems. I wouldn’t even say the how is different. I’m assuming Philo does believe god perceives everything. I suppose they’re just talking about different aspects of god or different parts of its creation process?

    Philo philosophy is not Christian faith. The logos he mentioned was a different stratum than God. Emanations.

    This is the problem with left brain thinking. You are never going to understand God through your small mind. Even your "trying" blocks your path. You are better off meditating.

    How could anyone be a skeptic and also believe in Noah's ark? It is littered with scientific claims that do not comport with reality.

    • @PhiloofAlexandria
      @PhiloofAlexandria  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Philo interprets most stories of that kind allegorically, as symbolic rather than literal truths.

    • @mileskeller5244
      @mileskeller5244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhiloofAlexandria thank you for the clarification. While I agree the bible is full of symbolism and allegories, I don't see how one could seriously take Noah's ark as either of those.
