  • In the final episode, the team find out how the combination of increased leisure time and affordable rail transport brought a new kind of freedom for working-class Victorians. Ruth travels along the beautiful south Devon coast before enjoying a Victorian shopping spree in the capital while Peter finds out what it was like to work on the excursion trains and the impact tourism had on the area.

    I started watching all these series' that Ruth is in because she's a wealth of knowledge on British and English history. I'm American and never learned anything on the English ages, but I don't think I would have wanted to learn anything on them from anyone but Ruth. I really wish she would put together a learning channel herself about each age of things she finds important or fascinating so that she can teach people from other cultures things about European history that she thinks is important in the scope of World History.
    Honestly I kind of wish we could find people from all scopes of World history that love their countries histories that could do that. I'd rather learn something from someone that genuinely adores their subjects than from someone that just wants to get through the day.

    • @HarryP457
      @HarryP457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Wholeheartedly agree. A person with true passion for their subject matter makes a much more engaging teacher than one who is just reciting text. Ruth is extremely knowledgeable, passionate and very much hands on and that makes her segments all the more engaging and entertaining.

      @prepperjonpnw6482 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree 100%! I was fortunate enough to have a history teacher that didn’t just through dates and names at us. He dove into the where, what, why etc of each era and period of history to the point of being completely engulfed in the subject at hand. The entire class would be steeped in interest to the point of discussing it for days afterwards. I wish all of my teachers had been as enthusiastic as “Mad Anthony” was lol. Mr Anthony always had a wooden metre stick with red circles on it and the phrase “Mad Anthony’s Stick” painted one red lol. He would use it to point at things like the world map or something he had written on the chalkboard. It was my favourite class and most of my classmates would say the same.

      It is a shame that US teachers get all their passion drained out by the administration and classes that are to large. Too often ends up that good teachers leave the field and the ones that don't care stay. Too many of the history teachers I had were frustrated want to be sports coaches.

    • @WyattRyeSway
      @WyattRyeSway 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Linda Tisue ....well, after they get tenure, you just can’t get rid of them. It’s nigh impossible in the US to get rid of a teacher on tenure.

    In the US, railroads actually created towns. Whistle Stops were about 5 to 10 miles apart. Early steam engines made frequent stops for water. On the Newport News to Richmond line*, you visit Lee Hall, Williamsburg, Lightfoot, Norge and Toano. Diascund was a hunting lodge for those waiting for their steam ships sailing from Old Point Comfort.
    Before the railroad, Roanoke, VA was called Big Lick ( a popular hunting area). The railroad built a resort hotel to enjoy the mountain air. A city quickly grew. Even now, the major industry is railroads.
    My favorite railroad town story is Disputana. The Norfolk to Petersburg line needed a station name. The nearby residents argued for some time. A daughter of the railroad president told her Dad, Disputana. That became the name.
    * The easternmost end of Huntington’s cross country railroad. He created Newport News Shipyard.
    Note: Norge is indeed Norwegian for Norway. At the time, there was a large amount of timber. You are unlikely to find any Norwegians today.

      When I was in 8th grade a friend would bring leftover pizza wrapped in foil and put it on a radiator in class. By 11 am we all were about to steal it, it smelled so good! But she could only do it when the weather was cold. You could do it all the time. Did you have a place for a coffee/tea pot that was on boil all the time?

I hold multiple doctorates, but feel like a total dummy when these three demonstrate the incredible knowledge which our forbears had to have, and had to pass down to others, just to survive. Ruth, I am sixty seven but consider you to be my video mother! I swear there is nothing you dont know how to cultivate, clean, cook, cauterize, cure , can, or create from scratch.... usually involving ash of some sort! Thanks to all of you for teaching us so much, and amazing your devoted audience with what it DIDNT know before. Keep up the great work.

    would anyone else love if we brought them to the US to do similar series but not necessarily over a whole year. just as a comparison of american railways/farms and just see how we developed differently and why? Like in edwardian and victorian farms they state several times important farm equipment was invented in the US. could be interesting to see their reactions to the reasons why we came up with those ideas and why they seemed so overkill for the British farms though still helpful. (reason being the size of our farms tend to be much larger so labor saving devices were not a luxury but a necessity.) Plus going through prohibition era I would love to see Peter and Alex start a moonshining and speakeasy business. I could so easily see those two getting into that hard. Plus would be great to see if Ruth would go full flapper or at least as much as anyone her age might have dared for the era.

      It’s been proven that eating soft foods will make your teeth more crooked. Eating harder and more fibrous foods that require a load of chewing will keep them straighter, but will wear them out. It happens so quickly that in a few short generations, the grandchildren will inherit their crooked teeth and will continue to have crooked teeth as long as they keep eating soft foods.

    I'm so jealous that even though this is their job to present this program they get to experience a little bet of what life was like when humanity first began to reaped the benefits of technology. We can never really know the thrill of someone's first train ride going fast than humans had ever gone before.

    We Americans always have to do everything bass ackwards. I no longer have any interest in merry-go-rounds, but I have fond memories from when I was young.

    It seems that Peter likes getting himself dirty... He looks cool though.
    I absolutely enjoyed these documentaries these 3 are in.

    Did the hand cart race from the opening of each episode ever actually happen? I don't remember seeing it.

    Hello Friends,
    Where can I purchase a petite outfit like the one Ruth has on? Or, is there a pattern for this? I love the colors!
    Thank you
