I have a mobile repair and service company in Oregon that I just started but I have been a mechanic for 45 years. A rock driller for a rock quarry I worked on had them on every bolt and nut on the whole machine and I was really impressed once they lock they aren't moving . I am glad you made this video because now I know where to find them. Thanks

Did use a M14 Nord-lock enlarged version (NL14sp) for my variator fan nut CVT transmission scooter, seems the only way not getting loose nut on this high vibration and heat cycling location.
Ordered directly (4 pairs in blister pack) from the factory in Sweden Nord-lock webshop.
$10+20 UPS sending worldwide to me in Bali, Indonesia.

I've always loved the simplicity of that idea. As long as you tighten the bolt correctly (using torque wrench) when installing and use two washers if it's nut&bolt... they will NEVER come loose.
Bolts always come loose because it's more preferable for them to do so. It's very VERY unlikely that bolt with tighten ON IT'S OWN so they will ALWAYS come loose eventually... unless you use locking wires, or these...

I specified Nord-Lock washers to be used with the fasteners to install custom intake and exhaust transition ducting I designed after the OE turbo chargers were upgraded on a huge marine diesel engine. I was concerned about the fasteners loosening due to vibration and thermal cycling and chose the Nord-Lock. Spring lock washers are a joke. I watched a video of them failing in a vibration test. Stop nuts are fine except the locking elements can only handle so much heat and certain application require they not be reused if removed. The other methods of locking such as lock wire or castellated nuts with cotter pins are a PITA and time consuming.

The contractor I worked for when building the LA Rams/ Chargers football stadium used this type lock washer. There were applications where it was critical that fasteners remained tightened to proper torque for a lifetime. Such as retractable roof sections weighing many tons.

I make my lock washers and none inlocked in my life..one day i ahd to lock a direction,, if it loose we could kill all of us, and used a method that will work for life, its my secret, it will not get out of there never.i call it counter tight, the more one unlock the more you lock the other so,, impossible mechanical unlock.. :) ancient machinist

its true, i used a split lock washer on the race head on the rear hub drive side of my bicycle.
Over weeks of riding the rear wheel play loosened until riding it felt like a massage machine on my arse and the tire would randomly brush the frame tail struts on both sides randomly and the axle bent because of the instability.
Then i went and did it propper with lock nuts which are serrated just like these washers

I am using these on the Airmaster 3 Blade Propeller on the aircraft I am building. Appear to work great (avoid having to safety wire the prop bolts) , but Airmaster says you can only reuse these once? The install manual says "The Nord-Lock® washers may only reused once. If reusing the washers, separate the washer pairs, and lubricate the cam surfaces with a film of grease before re-assembly."

I'm thinking to use Nord-lock washers for a project of new Ball Joints for a car 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. Original Ball Joints were attached with rivets, which I removed following the instructions from Haynes Manual for that car. The new Ball Joints came with bolts and Prevailing Torque Nuts for attaching them to the Control Arm, but there was no instruction sheet for the torque specs for those nuts. I started to do a research on that question, contacted the seller and so forth, but meanwhile came across this new product, which seems very appealing to me due to its high reliability. May I know your opinion on the torque specifications if I use these washers and Prevailing Torque Nuts or even more interesting situation if to use Nord-lock washers and Nylon Nuts? As far as I understand you apply very small torques on those Nylon Nuts (about 10-14 Ft-lbs) due to their specific locking mechanism with that nylon inside of the nut. But the wedged washers require about 60-70 Ft-lbs (the bolts are M12-1.25, Class 10.9). I wrote to Nord-lock about your great film. Very informative film, thank you.

Finally the comment or info Ive been looking for, thank you. I'm currently rebuilding my rear suspension on a vw passat 02, and well the bolts are discontinued as they'd rather you buy the new one. I don't like new cars so i bought a junker to restore. the rear subframe i have is brand new with all attachments and bolts being upgraded to grade 10.9 and 12.9 where i can find them. the issue is the locating bolt and my fear of it coming apart when i am driving. tons of videos and forums later I see this comment. thank you you and this video have solidified my choice on these washers. I will also use Aerotight locking nuts. I need fail-proof, my Mum will be in the passenger seat at times.

@@cephasgunn1993 The Nord-lock washers are doing a great job till now. I'm glad I installed them on that project w/new removable Ball-Joints. I don't know if it makes much sense, bcs I've read that the Control Arms wear as well, maybe that is why rivets were there, but for right now it works well, no nasty worn ball joints there anymore. I bought new spare Control Arms as well for the future though. But I'm afraid it will be much more difficult to replace them.

they work on a mechanical princip. Until the steel softens up they stay in the range of relaiable. When the steel softens the workload that holds the washers in place changes what in results in failure.

Do they come in smaller household sizes? I have a firewand that hold a soapstone ball at end of metal rod. You light it on fire then put it in fireplace ..hold near kindling to start the fire. But the spin on it will overtime...unwind it and the nut falls into fireplace and then useless until replaced. :/ but they are no where near that size!
