  • In this interview, author and researcher James Wright discusses the adoption, difficulties with, and use of robots in the Japanese eldercare industry.
As an aging yet technologically rich nation, the case of Japan stands as a forerunner in the study of technology in the eldercare field. Drawing on his ethnographic research in senior living facilities in Japan, Wright dives into the opportunities, challenges, and limitations of care robot use - including (but not limited to) increased cost of robot maintenance, issues in scaling up, and potential loss of human connection.
Will care robots be able to overcome these challenges and revolutionize elder care, or are they simply a passing fad?
