Great work as always Sammo , good to see your working ethics have stood you well with released prisoners . As you say respect earns respect & those officers who are corrupt bullies will do well to pack it in , no one is untouchable I hope they realise that . A

I was in buckley hall, 2011-2014, running the groundwork/brickwork courses, sounds crazy but i loved my time there, just missed the kids and wife.
The point is this, there is a lot to be said for learning those lads a skill they could carry forward and gain useful employment through.

That area is historic. Agecroft colliery used to employ a few thousand men in its heyday. There are tunnels underneath forrest bank about two thousand feet deep. These old mining tunnels meander all over the area, in fact some go near strangeways

Hello Sam and Keith, this was a really fascinating journey not only round the perimeter of HMP Forest Bank but a journey into both your experiences of this establishment and of HM Prison Service generally. Please could you do more "walk and talks" as they are so educational and thought provoking. Keith's comment about thinking what current prisoners at HMP Forest Bank were going through was a really thought provoking an reflective comment. All the best to you both and to every guest past, present and future (copyright infringement) as they all make this channel uniquely special. All the best and keep up the good work everyone!

How do lads!! I’m 100% behind treat people like you’d want to be treated. I did 18 yrs in the police and I’m proud to say that if I’d locked someone up and I was working when they were released from custody, on release every single person I’d dealt with was polite, if they’d been a bit of a prick the night before they’d apologise before they left and believe it or not most people’s parting words were “thank you”. Being civil costs nothing. There are two types of “prisoner”, they’ll either be a “frequent flyer” and you know you’ll be locking them up again within the next fortnight in which case why be an arse with them and make next time you deal with them a nightmare or they’ll be a person where being locked up will be the worst day of their lives in which case do you really need to make their experience even worse by being an arse and acting like the big I am with them? I don’t think so.
Another cracking interview, thanks both! ps Keith I like the hat 👍🏻😁 Kathy

that one stretch i did back in the nineties...
i'd already gone straight which did not please gmp so that was me a straight goer with a five stretch up me arse.
one of my biggest hang ups was thinking if i keep a straight goer the system will claim they rehabilitated me which of course they actually attempted the opposite.
i was only twenty one at the time and one helluva angry young man and as You know full well not everyone in uniform is worth giving the time of day to.
i lost over twelve moons in my first nine it was an irish 'terrorist' who pulled me to one side in full sutton that caused i to calm down and i will be forever grateful to him for that, pretty sure it was only a matter of time before i was back in the dock but more importantly having stood down on my personal war with the screws i learned there really is good and bad in every barrel, even some few wearing crowns on their uniforms.
but point being, rehabilitation? yh right lmao...
shame there aren't more like You Brother.
anyway be well and be lucky, shout out to Kieth of course all the best to youse both, cheers 😊.

I was asked to provide a reference for my friends son to work as a prison officer in a private Nottinghamshire establishment. He had passed the first round of interviews with the recruiting agency and was being put forward. I refused to provide the reference because the lad was unable to count money, had special educational needs, had been unable to pass a test on a moped on the road, could not read and write properly and had been spoken to in the past for approaching young people after he’d finished his work as a doorman, wearing a high viz and impersonating a police officer.
And yet this boy had passed the first round of interviews.

I was in brickwork for a good part of my working life. The amount of lads I've had on my gangs that got their tickets in prison and sorted their lives out thanks to courses they went on whilst inside was many.
If it weren't for those courses they'd never have got on the trowel, on a decent wage and on a better path in life.
If they've done away with those courses, then prison is 100% not about rehabilitation.
