      Honestly, anyone who calls someone a chooch (or any other insult) is likely a snob. In many shops that sell cigars, you can't pull a cigar out of the wrap until after you have purchased it. You can in fact get some of the scent through the cellophane, and it is a good way to get a feel for what a particular cigar will be like. If cellophane was so good at sealing that you wouldn't get a smell, then the cigar would definitely never dry out if in cellophane. This clearly is not the case and a humidor is recommended for any form of long term storage. One thing I respect about Alex is that instead of calling Brian out for what he said he instead explained in detail what a first impression was, and even after Brian called himself a chooch, Alex tried to reassure Brian that what he said has some merit even if it wasn't the proper way to appreciate the cigar. You will notice Jason mentioned Daniel from the Whiskey Tribe. He paraphrased what Daniel says, but most experts will tell you the same thing. What truly matters is that you enjoy it, and that you enjoy it the way you like. Do not let others tell you how to enjoy things. You can take guidance from others, but don't talk down to others for enjoying things differently.

    Alex gives me the same vibes as Chris the wine expert; anyone who tries to tell (read: sell) me the backstory about a product rather than the qualities of the product instantly triggers my charlatan alarm.
    "This cigar was handrolled by a one-eyed witch doctor in a POW camp by moonlight to secretly fund the local freedom fighters. He only ever made exactly 666 of them."
    "Is it an enjoyable smoke?"
    "Oh Hell no, it tastes like shit. That's why I want you to focus on its (fictional) backstory."
    LSS: cigar is worth however much a chooch is willing to pay for it, and it costs as much as the retailer decides to charge. Rarity, quality, and story may influence these numbers, but they're fundamentally unrelated.

    • @MyCigarPack
      @MyCigarPack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Russ, you bring up a great point. Nonetheless, quality and traits in a cigar are subjective. Breaking down the qualities or characteristics of the products/composition itself would be tough for Jason and Brian to gauge because they're foreign to the classification and qualities of the different tobaccos used. Given that the task at hand was for them to guess the price of three different expensive cigars, the back story was what was needed to be used, specially when all three are already using superb tobacco (mind you, of all three we only sell one of them and it's never in stock) through an extensive aging process.
      While I do want to agree with you in terms of the fundamental un-relativeness of rarity, quality, and story in relation to the price, as quality should in theory solely dictate these, the basic concept of supply and demand tyrannizes the consumer's reaction upon the scarcity or rarity of the product, and the like it or not, the story is what allows Gucci to charge $600 for the same shoe that Cole Haan sells for $200, or Gap charge $45 for the same shirt that Brooks Brothers sells for $150.

    Quite surprised gas burners were used to light up, I thought wood matches were preferable to not interfere with the flavour?

    • @MaskMan191
      @MaskMan191 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Matches interfere a lot with flavor due to the sulfur. If you use a match, ideally you light the match, let it burn down into the wood, use that to light a split made of cedar, and use the cedar split to light the cigar.
      Zippo lighters are the worst for lighting a cigar because the lighter fluid taste will impart itself into the first quarter of the cigar. Just don't use zippo style lighters that use lighter fluid.
      Butane lighters (whether they're jet flame or open flame) are the best as butane burns clean with no odor or taste. Funnily enough, if you don't want to buy a lighter just for cigars, go to the gas station and spend a dollar on a BIC.
      Really, though, if you are in need of a light and don't have any options, any flame will do. It's just that some are better than others. However, do not ever use your stove flame to light a cigar.

    Price alone doesn't mean it's a good or bad cigar I've had expensive cigars that were very unpleasant and awful and cheap ones that were fantastic and vice versa

    I wish I liked cigars but they just kinda suck. They never burn well, they rarely taste good, they last too long and relighting them sucks. However pipe tobacco is incredible. I rarely smoke it but when I do its always good.

    I've smoked a lot of cheap cigars in my life and only a handful of more expensive ones and I still can only really tell a slight difference. It's kind of like scotch... I can tell a huge difference between a $15 bottle of blended and a $50 bottle of single malt but I could barely tell you the difference between a $50 and $100+ bottle.

    Rule #1...Always take a cigar out of the wrapper or tube. Rule #2 Always use a good humidor and maintain a 71-72% humidity. Rule #3 Based on Rule #1 and #2 Cigars are like fine wine. They get better with age if cared for. I have 20yr old Cuban cigars that will not disappoint...
