My uncle served 2 tours in this unit during this exact time late 1966 thru early 1968 as a platoon commander and he went on many missions across the fence into Laos and all along the Ho Chi Men trail and was exposed to constant spraying of Agent Orange which eventually killed him of multiple cancers many years later.

I would never want to disrespect the actual combat troops of the Vietnam war, but the general staff are a different matter, Westmorland being, from everything I have seen and read, was living life as though he was at home, with his private compound a specially built swimming pool, only venturing out for photo opportunity’s and social activities, leaving a lot of the war to his staff. Now, of course I could be wrong, but between LBJ, McNamara and Westmorland you had a perfect recipe for failure, not letting the boots fight as boots do best, the AirPower used in a totally ineffective and wasteful way, on again, off again bombing campaigns, prohibited target areas and rules of engagement that made fighter superiority impossible to gain, and the cost 50,000 men and women who tried to do it the right way, but led with ineptitude. From the top down the USA was betrayed, especially the boots. RIP all those who paid the ultimate price for that betrayal, Lest We Forget.
