I ended up getting 1013 lives with this method. Then I got bored of grinding and moved on with the game. Who knows what the limit is... Note: My save file did mention I had 1013 lives, but when I opened up the life counter in-game, it only showed the last two digits. You can still tell it's a 4 digit number because of a big gap between Crash's face and the life counter. If I actually had just 13 lives, the number would be right next to Crash's face. Another clue is the 3rd digit. If you only have, for example, 2 lives, the counter will say "2", but if you have 1002 (or presumably 1102, 1202 etc) the counter will say "02". The counter starting with zero shows that you're dealing with a 4 digit number. When I lost 12 of these lives, it said I had 01, then it said 00 and when I lost yet another life it said 999, which is what I had then. But whatever, the real counter may be hidden but they still work. It's not like you'll even be worrying about remaining lives enough at that point to pay attention to the in-game countet, and again, you can see the real counter on your save file, if you're truly curious. EDIT: I got up to 1106. It still only shows the last two digits. When I go from 1101 to 1099, the in-game counter says 01, then 00, then 99. The gap between Crash's face and the number is the same length as before, not that there was any reason for that to be different. I assume the "only the last two digits appear on-screen with a gap between the number and Crash's face" rule applies to any number between 1000 and 9999. So, for example, if your counter says 00 you could be anywhere from 1000 to 9900. Now I wonder if you can get up to 10,000 lives, but I'd rather not grind for that. Like I mentioned earlier, this is what I noticed in the in-game counter; the save file states the number accurately.
Just to clear it up, the description says the maximum number that can be represented with two bits is 255, this is, however, incorrect. The maximum number would be binary 11 which is decimal 3.
This was shortly after the release of the game on PS4. I'm sure if you play on PS5 or PC the load times will be much faster. The game is really well made and I strongly encourage you give it a chance.
justin ripley still works I'm up to 133 it takes a couple times for the counter to start going past 99 I saved in another slot and then it started working for me.
I believe this is the largest collection of lives in the trilogy, I'm unaware of any places in the other games like this. However, you are very unlikely to use all of these lives, it is mostly for fun.

It's nice since you can try and fail as many times as you need or as many times as you want... But where's the Fun and sense of risk in that? It's a bigger challenge when you have limited tries... The game becomes less challenging if you know that you can fail as many times as you want, sure i would like that for the Bridge levels but other than that i'll pass

Make sure to pause right as you get the last life or even before. If you wait just 2 seconds it wont count
