Down the Cellar 135 - Tom Thumb

  • Well collectors, here we are again... and not direct from a freshly opened grave in the main chapel of the Holy Trinity Church at Tattershall, Lincolnshire!
Tom welcomes his trusty boxman back down the cellar, and regales him with a harrowing tale of a pants related situation gone horribly awry. And then they open parcels for your amusement.
    BOILERPLA... ER, GENERAL INFO:
I'd like to thank each and every one of you who take the time to watch DtC, and am very grateful to everyone who takes even more time out of their day to comment.
In a perfect world Tom or Ob would be able to engage with everyone in the comment section, but alas the world is far from perfect. Tom doesn't know how (and refuses to learn) and Ob is a major Luddite. He's convinced his phone is spying on him.
    FAQ & A:
Q: I have a burning question about something in the video! What should I do?!
A: An email sent directly to Tom is the best way to get your question answered, because while he most definitely reads each and every one of your comments, he hasn't quite gotten the hang of replying to them in the comment section, and is not likely to in the foreseeable future. Or ever. Seriously, he still calls TH-cam "the U-TOOBZ". Just email him, srsly.
    Tom's personal email is: herrwittmann@gmail.com
You can also call him if you prefer (856-866-8733) between the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM, EST. This may be slightly more difficult because he's forever running around away from his desk, but it's worth a shot.
Q: I have an amusing anecdote, scathing criticism, or heartfelt compliment that I deeply need to express and I require / demand / long for a personalized response! What should I do?
    A: See "A" above.
    Again, Tom's email is: herrwittmann@gmail.com

Gents. The two framed pictures goring and AH are great. I have two of them as well. They could be purchased in national socialist book shops across Germany. These come from a berlin distributor. Mine as well. I have only seen these in goring and AH with a silvered layer over aluminum as well as a porcelain plate in the same frame.

The RAD Standarte was rolled around a pole for flag bearer with gorget. You can see them at the rallies in use by RAD. There was a pinning device to hold it and no tunnel hoist. Went with streamers and pole top. I had a full set once. Not a table or wall banner.

The piece at 1:07:49 appears to be a bronze insert for a fireplace mantel. I've seen it before but its been a long time. This piece wouldve gone beneath the mantel shelf, and above the firebox itself possibly plastered to the brick surround. (Scratch the blackening it should smell sooty) Although at first glance it appears to be SA, and it could be, without color or specific patches on uniforms it could just as easily be a representation of early SS from the coffee can kepi era. Regardless, it would've been over someone important's fireplace, (think: Otto Wagener, Viktor Lutze, or Ernst Röhm, himself) or perhaps at a Reichfuhrerschule, or SS / SA retreat like Wewelsburg. Nice piece!

Johnny, if you're reading this, it would be nice if you spoke more German on the unboxing. Ya know every so often say some things in German. I think it would add to the atmosphere of the German militaria theme.

The Saar is a river and a region which was taken from Germany after WW1 via the Treaty of Versailles. It rejoined in 1935. Its flag and coat of arms were blue and white - maybe the reason for the uniform color looking bright blue versus dark blue common to State Railway Workers? Or is that the correct blue? I’m just pulling stuff off the internet - I have no clue about this subject. Anyway…
…As for the city of Saarbrucken (Saar Bridges) - from Wikipedia: “The modern city of Saarbrücken was created in 1909 by the merger of the three cities of Saarbrücken…Saarbrücken became capital of the Saar territory established in 1920. Under the Treaty of Versailles (1919), the Saar coal mines were made the exclusive property of France for a period of 15 years as compensation for the destruction of French mines during the First World War. The treaty also provided for a plebiscite, at the end of the 15-year period, to determine the territory's future status, and in 1935 more than 90% of the electorate voted for reunification with Germany, while only 0.8% voted for unification with France.”
Unsurprisingly, the Allies bombed this place to pieces during WW2.
