The day before the 2023 Tony nominations were announced, the cast, band and composer of the musical Kimberly Akimbo climbed out of their bus and shuffled behind the Tiny Desk. That's no easy feat for nine cast members, four bandmates and a composer wielding a glockenspiel.
Kimberly Akimbo (with title character played by Broadway star Victoria Clark) is a coming-of-age story about a 16-year-old girl with a rare genetic disease, which causes her to age four times faster than normal. The show is funny, sad and uplifting all at once. It's a family affair with songs sung by Kimberly's aunt, parents, love interest and friends.
For the transfer to the Tiny Desk, composer Jeanine Tesori led the audience through a playlist of four standout musical numbers, making sure to shout out her collaborator, playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. After opening with Bonnie Milligan's Tony-nominated performance of "Better," Tesori asked her cast and band to introduce themselves. Justin Cooley, who plays Kimberly's first crush, could not make it to the Desk. The composer-turned-emcee used the opportunity to thank all understudies who work tirelessly to ensure that the show must go on - even at a desk in a Washington, D.C. office.

I read a recent interview with Victoria Clark where she said she retired from singing, prior to Kimberly Akimbo, because she thought age had destroyed her voice. OMFG: Her voice is just gorgeous. I saw this on Broadway, and was blown away by her performance (and everyone else's). And most definitely her voice is still just beautiful.
oh my god musicals are a living nightmare!!!!!
One of the all-time greats
Is the same cast on tour?
Saw this two nights ago and was absolutely floored at how stunning it was. Went in blind and so happy I had a chance to witness this. Run and see it!
If you guys don't start releasing all of these concerts in hi-res audio, I swear I'm gonna make a strongly worded inner monologue that won't end up anywhere. Be warned, NPR!
best comment...put a smile on my face, thanks
You Sir, need to “Donna Summers in the phone book” before you…don’t say something that no one knows you regret! ✌️
😂I know a guy
😂agreed, count me in
how dare you besmirch the audio engineering team at NPR/tiny desk!
Jeanine Tesori is a musical chameleon! Her "style" changes drastically depending on the show. I can't wrap my head around the fact that the same person wrote the music for Shrek, Fun Home, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Kimberly Akimbo. She's amazing!!
And Caroline, or Change!!
And Violet!!!
I am LIVING for this arrangement of Father Time!!!!!!!
Saw it on Broadway a couple weeks ago. Absolutely WONDERFUL. This young man singing with Victoria is the understudy for the role, and he is just delightful (as was the actor I saw). I absolutely LOVE the optimism of this show in a story line that could easily have not had such optimism. I think THAT is what makes it so distinctive.
This is amazing. The best performance ever! Bonnie Milligan is great.
Thank you. She's my niece. We're very proud of her ❤️
Wow Father Time made me tear me up, that was a gorgeous version of it
My girlfriend and I went to NYC at the beginning of April. She gave me the choice of seeing the Michael Jackson musical, the Neil Diamond musical, or Kimberly Akimbo, which I had not heard of. I was *so* right to choose Kimberly Akimbo. It was stunningly good, but I have to say I'm addicted to this version of "Father Time" with the Gospel-choir-like backing vocals. Another note - when hearing "Anagram" for the first time at the Booth Theater, I said to my girlfriend that I really like the song because I could identify with being the nerd who cracks a joke that no one else will get. :-) I like to believe that I think outside of the box and that I'm a bit unorthodox. And I like Kimberly Akimbo. Thanks for hosting this performance.
If you haven't seen this show, RUN to see it. It's just an amazing piece of theatre.
I saw it yesterday as a surprise from Broadway Roulette. It was so campy, surprisingly dark, and very funny.
@@supervivo7069 what’s Broadway Roulette?
@@kacichristian It's a service that chooses a random ticket for you! You get a whole list of shows, are allowed to cross off a few you've already seen, and then the rest is random. You don't get the ticket until the day of the show.
If you get a chance, definitely see this show. Funny, heartbreaking, phenomenally acted, and gorgeous music; everything you could want in a show plus ice skating!
I really, really love when y'all host musicals like this! This was so cute and fun and beautiful
Such a warm group and love the respect thrown to covers
I appreciate what Tiny Desk has exposed me to :)
I saw Justin Cooley and I’m so glad to hear his standby! That was so amazing!! To me this is my favorite show I’ve seen!! I keep begging my mom to bring me again haha! You guys are so amazing!!
This was pure serotonin. I love this show and these people.
This show has so much heart, so much love, and such great singing and acting - highly highly recommend.
For anyone who has ever misunderstood - unheard - unseen - this show answers your calling. Brilliant, funny, heart wrenching, spot on and realizing what life is all about - I have seen it three times and me not a musical person - just loved every minute! Thank you! Xx
This is an incredible show which I saw a few months ago. Go see it! You will not regret it. Tony Award for Best Musical.
I saw this show on Broadway recently with my family. It is an amazing show - very funny, very sad. It's beautifully written and performed. Costumes, staging, lighting, everything is great. Great cast! This concert was nice, but these songs really hit differently in context of the show.
CONGRATS YOU TONY WINNERS !!!
I won the lottery the day of the bway flea.....went in pretty blind and ended up loving it so much, I cried like crazy lol. Ended up getting a full cast signed poster after which I was very excited about too!
I'd heard some of the other songs from this show, but "Great Adventure" is just perfect. Makes me wish I was in town so, so bad.
Coming from another part of the world..haven’t seen the show or any broadway live but fell in love with this NPR performance. Feeling lucky got to experience this.
Amazing beautiful n swinging ..Gimme more. All of you are beautiful people ❤. Gimme more of this NPR ..Bob n team..
Saw the show last night and LOVED IT! Miguel Gil was playing Seth, and he was great. We actually had three understudy/standby performers for the show, and they were all excellent.
Thank you for having Kimberly Akimbo on Tiny Desk! I love the stripped down arrangements used for the songs.
Great performance overall! I'm enjoying this "Tiny Desk" episode immensely and I thank you for showcasing this great cast's artistry. And Ms. Jeanine Tesori? That talented composer is my inspiration right here because her energy and playfulness here help make "Kimberly Akimbo" come alive at full force. And relevant.
Just returned from NYC and the HIGHLIGHT of my trip was seeing the BRILLIANT musical. I can't recommend it more hightly. I laughed, I cried, I clapped until my hands hurt. I wish I could see it again but this Tiny Desk Concert was a perfect lift to my day. Thank you NPR and genius cast of Kimberly Akimbo
I cried just like I did when I saw you all live! Just beautiful! And bravo to my cousin, Olivia Hardy! 🎉🎊
HI!!!

Congrats on the Tony's.
Saw the show last week and loved it, taking my 15yo again tomorrow and this was the perfect way to get ready! So SO good, though it seems Allie was holding back? maybe she had something going on with her throat/voice that day. Still beautiful.
I KNOW THAT GUY, michael I am so happy for all you have accomplished, always knew you were gonna do awesome things
I've promised myself I will one day get through hearing "Father Time" without turning into a weepy mess. Today is apparently not that day.
I went to see kimberly akimbo and the cover guy for seth sounded exactly like him. You could not tell he was an understudy, he was so good.
Such a terrific musical and amazing production!
I saw Miguel Gil as Seth on Broadway and he was so good! I'm glad he's in this video!
congrats Michael for how far you’ve come !! I remember watching you at our high school plays and you were and always and have been incredible !!

'Anagram' is the best love song in musical theatre since "Suddenly Seymour"

After Kimberly won the Tony. (Congrats 🎉!) I searched TH-cam and was delighted to find this vid. Geez Louise, NPR! You need to do a better job of advertising this delightful concept! Thank you NPR, and enjoy your Tony's Kimberly, they are well deserved.💕

Net thuis en bij mij deze aanbeveling van Tiny Desk. Een verademing en goede start voor dit weekend. Hopelijk ook hier in NL in een van de theaters. Groeten uit een zonnig Vlissingen.
The percussionist is so cool :)
This was the cast that I saw (including Miguel Gil) when I saw Kimberly Akimbo in late April-so good!
There is so much positive in this short video omg!
Jeanine Tesori is everything in this video
I saw Kimberly Akimbo in January and fell in love with everything about this show!! I love the entire score but I'll be honest... I've listened to How to Wash a Check a couple of hundred times!! Break legs to the entire cast and crew and fingers crossed at the Tonys!!!❤🎉🎶
I love every minute of this video. What a beautiful group of people.
My god, amazing! If i'm sleeping and this girl scream with her highest voice in my ear "WAKE UUUUUP" I can get easily a hearth attack!
That kid has a GREAT FACE!!!
So wholesome! Can't wait for it to come to the UK:)))
If it comes to the UK I will be making my first trip to West End. I so hope you’re right. Amazing show. One of the best I’ve seen in 50 years of going to see shows.
So great!!
Please get the cast of shucked!!
You guys have to do the cast of Sweeney todd!!!
This show is a masterpiece. Please, please see it if you're anywhere New York.

JK BUT IM SEEING IT TOMORROW ACTUALLY FRONT ROWWW
Omg Bonnie !!!!!
I’m playing this song over and over while I’m playing in the World Series of Poker… (especially if I’m down in chips)
For anyone who has seen the show--in "Great Adventure" is does Kimberly put her arm over Seth's shoulder? Or here, is that Vicky Clark putting her arm around Miguel?
I believe that was Victoria, not Kim.
In the show, this song does bring the characters of Kimberly and Seth together. It would be very “ in character” for Kim to put her arm around Seth during this song.
I love Miguel's version in this!
I wish they did Our Disease! My fave
Well this was fun lol
Such a good show
I loved it! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻Please do a CNCO session ! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
