Hi Bill, I have recently taken an interest on tropical plants after inheriting a fish pond from previous people which looked all dark and spooky due to inappropriate planting. Anyway, I have replaced the inappropriate stuff with bamboo, yucca and palms and was just looking at buying elephant ears plants. At a visit to the aquatic shop a couple days ago, I saw one in in there which I bought but as I carried it to the checkout, I noticed that one of the stems had broken halfway down. In fact, all three of them have broken and staking it wasn't going to help so I just took them off and will replant and stake it in a pot. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos, they are a great help :D

I, too, enjoy elephant ears. I live in a hot dry area and am not able to grow them now. Your videos always bring a smile. BTW, your hanging basket in the background looks beautiful. The video showing you trimming it back was so helpful. Have a great day, Bill. Your fan in deep south Texas.

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's Great it's good to start slow... get a feel for how things grow in your environment... growing a collection too big too fast can get overwhelming and stressful 😀 the larger elephant ears are a nice starting point. Just keep in mind that if you Grow them inside they are spider mites magnets... its manageable just something to keep a close eye on

It’s tough to keep them looking their best over the winter here in Canada. If the corm/base didn’t rot it will likely start growing again when the light and temps are optimal

Brent Boudreau They tend to be seasonal. I see them in garden centres usually starting late spring and into summer. not sure what garden centres you have in your area but you are a little warmer than me so you should have a decent collection. you can also find the tuber/bulbs in the grocery store. look for Taro root or Eddoe or Dasheen... i hope i spelled those correctly. many types of elephant ears are edible.

Hi there, I have around 20 of these guys in my garden, summer is well on its way and gets really hot here. It sits easily at 47 Degrees Celsius noon time and wondered what these plants do in extreme heat?
Do they tend to go dormant in extreme heat like they do in cold winter months?
    love to know..... Thanks

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

They LOVE the heat... but if you are very dry they would likely go dormant... but if kept watered and shaded from the hot mid day sun they should grow like weeds.

I get leaf burn in summer sometimes but only when a new leaf emerges making it four leaves. I just pull on the soon to die leaves instead of cutting it like peeling an onion. This year my plant is about the same size at the video one with lil baby leaves. YAY lol!

    I have a question:
Do you water your elephant ears or do you wait for the rain?

If the soil is dry water them... if the soil is wet you don't need to water... when mine go outside in the garden for the summer I need to water occasionally when we have an extended dry period.. if they stay in pots outside you will need to water often as the plant gets bigger

Bill great video! I just purchased my first two Alocasia's, Alocasia Californias. I wish I would have watched your video first. I'm new to the plant thing! When I put mine in containers I didn't pull the roots apart and separate them like you did. I just took them out of their smaller container's and repotted them, with the appropriate soil, etc. Should I dig them back out and break up the roots, or do you think they'll be ok?

    • @PlantzNThings

+Steve B Welcome to the wonderful world of Alocasias :) you don't need to dig it up to tease the roots... the plant will find its way. these are fast growers... i'm sure in a month the roots will be exploring their new home.

    • @PlantzNThings

I would love to have my alocasia plants go dormant... but many don't like to go dormant willingly... and some have a hard time waking back up. so the majority of the time I keep them growing over winter... but keep them dry... that being said... i'm starting to experiment more with dormancy as my collection grows

Currently watching this video as I'm wanting some types from an enthusiast . I too get really excited and buy myself a couple every year. Unfortunately there is one greenhouse near me that sells them and had one left. I quickly snatched it up. Seems as though everyone went crazy with planting this year w covid-nothing else to do???
I see you use president choice fertilizer - where are you ? I'm in Ontario zone 4.

Not even sure what it's called but that's probably the most beautiful detangling of roots I've ever seen! Like other people practically shred the roots with a rake, but you just calmly detangle them like a boss.

To keep it from falling over why couldn't you put like a metal pole down through a hole in the bottom of the pot and sink that metal pole into the soil or metal rod like those things they use in concrete to reinforce it and then if that's a plastic part You Oughta be able to drill a couple holes to put the reinforced Concrete in and be able to pound it in the ground till it's level with your pot so it's not sticking up and be hazardous is somebody trips on it and Falls onto your pot just an idea not sure if it'll work

    Next time:
For those who will not plant their ee outside where the loss of the trunk is possible by winter injury.
Remove older leaves to lighten the top load. Removing all but one is best.
place a small plastic file type crate with big holes into the bottom of your new pot and place bricks or stones to lodge it into place.
Do NOT remove the ee from its old flimsy nursery pot**********,
Cut off the bottom of the old pot and shave the roots off that are matted on the bottom taking care to not cut into the bottom of the rhizome.
Set this pot on top of the crate in your new pot
Place 2-3 stake through holes in the crate
They will be looped with pantyhose to the pot, so should be not too long in length
Once everything is firmed up and stable, pour soil in incrementally, and firming it in with water as you go.
You will need add soil again as soil compresses and decomposes over months years, but your rhizome will remain at the top of the pot.
Sand in the bottom section will help to keep it from tipping over in wind. But keep it light enough to move to winter quarters.
The thin nursery pot will be easily ruptured by the rhizome in time , meanwhile it kept the support roots firmly attached to their trunk*************
You can cut the pot off in time.
You can remove the stakes once the plant roots have reasonably filled the pot , and the pot can be moved without the trunk wobble.
    Trunk wobble is BAD. Avoid.

This group of plants will always hold a spot in my heart... in the summer you can't beat their tropical vibe. but in the winter when they come inside is when the hate comes in...lol... the spider mites... OMG...lol... the colocasia and zanthesoma are the best as they easily go dormant and come back into growth on command... do you have a favorite Colocasia?

  • @kathleenmurphy2379

You could have also put some rocks in the bottom to try to make that heavier and help drainage. Also not that kind of plant because it does grow roots deeper than most but if you just have little impatience and uranium is in a big pot you can put the packing styrofoam peanuts in the bottom of the pot because the roots don't grow 18in or 20in into the ground so why waste all that potting soil plus it will keep the pot from getting really heavy but in the case of your alocasia you want the plan to be heavy so it doesn't sail across the garden with those big
