    I just finished scanning my 84 year old father-in-law's 7,000+ slides from the 1950s through the 1990's. Most of the Ektachrome slides had degraded terribly (all slides had been well cared for in metal slide boxes), some were unrecognizable as to what the image had been and some lost all color to the point of having just red. While the Kodachrome slides looked like they hadn't lost any of their vibrant colors. In case you're wondering about the permanency of developed slides. Nowadays we can scan slides as soon as we get them, so maybe it's not an issue for you.

    Good stuff, Benj. I’ll have to limber up my FM2 with the Ektachrome. Used to develop it myself when I was stationed in West Germany. Also shot Agfachtome and, of course, Kodachrome 64. Looks like the good old days are returning just a bit. Enjoyed your work!

    • @teleaddict23
      @teleaddict23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Jennifer M That’s not gonna happen as the developing process is too difficult, many of the chemicals are not available now. It’s possible they could bring back a more vivid Ektachrome which tbh would be just as good.

    • @WeekdayProductions
      @WeekdayProductions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      shame though - kodakchrome was the most chromatically stable film ever made, other slide films fade or colours go a bit wonky over time. ektachrome is just another E6, not much to get excited about over fuji (which was always the more highly regarded E6). You can dev kodachrome in B+W process, the magic is in the re-introduction of the dye into the different layers. Not an insurmountable problem for chemistry, but it would make for a very expensive film. I'm going out on a limb and predicting that like the resurgence of other analogue formats, it will get a revival, but not for a long time!! @@teleaddict23

    @ditto1958 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I never really liked Ektachrome. I guess, tbh it was because it was too real. I loved Kodachrome. It made stuff look better than real life. It was hard to use, and expensive to have processed, but every now and then, you’d nail the exposure, and Kodachrome would give you a treasure, a beautiful, saturated image with an almost 3D look that would become a way to peer back in time. Nothing else in photography like it.
    Oh, and hey- you’re a good photographer. Thank you for videos like this.

    The dark blue shadows brought back some memories of using Ektachrome back in the 70s. Everyone shot (positive) slides back then, or black and white. Color negatives in 35mm were too small to maintain sharpness in the color enlarging process.

    On film days, before I went digital 2005, I always shot Velvia 50. I just loved it, the tones in sunset and small grain, despite it's questionable skin tones, very strong contrast, incredibly deep black and magenta like overcast. I mostly shot landscapes with tripoid with bracketing, but since shooting landscapes was my passion, my freezer was filled with Velvia and since that was the film I bought in bulk, that was the film I used for everything. In hindshight, maybe I should have had 400 to put in to my camera when I handed it to my brother to take photos at my wedding...

    Very interesting. Back in the 1980s I shot a lot in that area using Kodachrome (my favorite), Ektachrome, and Fujichrome. I loved K25 and K64 as well as K400 for moderately low light situations. One thing I liked about the slide films of that era is that they were reasonably tolerant of slight under exposure which usually resulted in a bit deeper color. Typically I would set my Minolta X570 to under expose by 1/3 stop to help prevent accidentally blowing out the highlights. The new Ekta looks pretty nice but I suspect that it will not be as archival as Kodachrome was. I am difinitely going to dust of the Minolta and give it a try though when the opportunity presents itself.

    I shot exactly one roll of slide film - back when it looked like Provia was about to die and I'd never get another chance.
    The scans came back hideously dissapointing because the scanner tried to correct the brightness - it looked awful. Like I'd overexposed and underexposed across the board.
    It's something I'd expected - given slide's reputation.
    The dissapointment lasted until I got an actual, physical, magnified slide viewer. The slides, when properly backlit, look stunning. They glow like miniature stained glass windows.
    I'm pretty sure that 'technically' some of my favourite shots were underexposed, - and a few definitely had too much dynamic range in the scene to come off - but the cooler colours and tones really suited the evening sky and let the oranges of the sunset and post sunset glow. Others, had the exposure nailed right down the line to get everything from the shadow on a rail, to a hint of colour in the blue sky directly beneath the high afternoon sun.
    There's something special about having something that can't be shared digitally. It's something that exists, and only one copy of it exists. And it can only be enjoyed by going to that copy and viewing it

    great review, pretty sure exposure bracketing was almost a requirement for slide film, just in case... although now that it costs $2.50 per shot(excluding development costs), not sure if it is as viable. I have been noticing recently that when you take the "character" out of colour negative film I am not seeing a lot of reason to shoot it, I think that digital has gotten so good now that a good/affordable scan of negative film is not better than a decent digital. However seeing the clarity/detail in the slide film means there might be life in it yet. I love shooting with older cameras, a decent 35mm camera still weighs less than a dslr and especially a full fram dslr. thank you for the great video.

    The shots my Dad took in 1947 with Kodachrome still look perfect. However the ones taken with Ektachrome turned red over the years. How archival is this new Ektachrome?

    david hancock's video about ektachrome found (and showed) that even high end lab scans looked worse than DSLR scans. I find that interesting, also did you try projecting it since that is one of the unique things that can be done with slides?

  • @max-lee
    @max-lee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think i remember seeing that slide when i was in middle school. It got that white frame around it and it use a projector if i remember correctly.

  • @Thereal111t
    @Thereal111t 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah slide film is like shooting digital without the benefit of being able to see the results instantly. The negative films were always designed to have the absolute widest latitude possible. It’s not possible with the reversal process. It boggles my mind that Kodak is still developing film technology. What’s different with this film compared to the older ektachrome?

  • @Sophort

    Really good video. Do you perhaps have any tips for editing the scans? What and how much to do of what? That'd be extremely helpful. I am using an EPSON V700 if that helps ;) Cheers, Thomas

    So whenever you shoot film do you always need a light meter with you? Might seem like a stupid question but I really only shoot digital so dont have need for one. Ive shot some svema 125 but I have no idea what the negatives will look like... In other-words Im too scared to develop them :)

    Good information and glad to see Ektachrome coming into the market. However, I have to agree with an earlier post that I've found Kodachrome to be a superior film. All my Ektachrome slides had badly color shifted within less than 10 years of being developed. I have Kodachromes from the late 1940s that are just as colorful as the day they were exposed.However, I also have Velvia slides taken in the early 1990s which have not color shifted. If this new E100 is as good as the Velvia (same ASA), then perhaps I'll give it a go when it becomes more readily available.

      I shot a roll or two of Ektachrome E100GX from 2003 that still look great today. These newer E6 films are much better when it comes to resistance to fading.

    • @Mario-re2qp
      @Mario-re2qp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      my raw scans of Kodachrome definitely look to have more resolution/sharpness and come out with less of a color cast than the Provia 100F I shoot now. Without any post processing the Kodachrome scans appear as a higher quality image compared to those from Provia 100F.

    Love taking photos with my trusty Nikon FM. Except rather hard to find 35 mm film locally except for 400 ASA print film. For any other type of film have to go to specialty photo stores or mail/online order. Great to see Ektachrome coming back but my favorite was Kodachrome 64.

    About 55 years ago my hobby was photography but I was never very good at it. I often underexposed. Although I enjoyed the technical side of developing and printing b&w photos I didn’t process colour. I couldn’t go back to using film after experiencing digital which is, for me, idiot proof. However I do hope more younger folk try film photography.
    One thing I remember is that professionals wanting clarity always used slide (positive) film as it had little, if any, grain. On the other hand b&w film by its very composition always had grain, even the very finest slow exposure film. They are made in a completely different way.
    Even then I realised that, as you state, Ektachrome was cooler than Kodachrome which was more vibrant and my usual choice.
    Just a little extra note: for b&w I used Kodak Tri-X which was a fast film (400 ASA) and by special developing technique I managed to overrate it to 3200 ASA. Fun days then.

    Thank you for a wonderful video. Really enjoyable and informative. I’ve got a question about your tripod ball head/quick release plate setup: I note that you use a screw knob clamp, and not a lever release clamp. I’m in the process of trying to decide which one to purchase. I can understand some of the advantages of the lever release, but I’m nervous about accidentally catching the lever. Can you share your views/experiences with this, and your reasons for choosing the screw knob clamp, please? Thank you, Trevor Hawkins, New Zealand

      Light leak from the machine(could be temperature's problem which oil was solidified and slow down the release of shutter curtain of his M6) and overexposed the pictures for that leaking area, which just kinda common.@@CraigMansfield
