I still have a few of these but the ones I remember most from when I was a kid was the Simon's Quest, Double Dragon, and Mega Man 2 handhelds. They seemed so cool at the time, I think it was more so the design and the images on the actual handheld that made them so appealing more so than the actual games on them.
I grew up surrounded by video games but I still rather enjoyed the novelty of games like this every so often. Tiger as a brand wasn't so big here in the UK, I don't think, but there were certainly lots of Asian knock-off LCD games, many of which were reskins of the exact same game! I recall a game called "Invader II" and a Formula One-style racing game playing exactly the same -- dodge stuff coming towards you on the road/in the trench, grab a thing from the left-hand side of the screen and carry it to the right. I think those handhelds were my first ever exposure to "Engrish" too. Fond memories of my father trying to decipher the instruction sheets, with all it's talk of "carrying to the right-hand safty side" [sic]. Are you guys familiar with Nintendo's Game & Watches at all? They used the same method of LCD display, but tended to have much better game design. (If I remember correctly, they were also the first place we ever saw Nintendo's distinctive D-Pad design that was later used on the NES, Game Boy and SNES.) I was particularly fond of the ones for Super Mario Bros, Mario's Cement Factory and Oil Panic growing up. They're worth a fair bit these days, too -- perhaps something to look out for on the next trip to a flea market that hasn't thrown you out yet!
I had about 20 of these I collected as a kid. Double dragon was actually pretty fun. It would add moves as you progressed and the enemies got harder. Had an ending too which was pretty cool for an LCD game.
Had Mega Man 2 and Street Fighter 2... both were fun for a. few days... maybe weeks. then I opened them up to see how they worked and couldn't put them back together right.... In the end, I had more fun opening them up and putting them back together! I had this baseball one though that was super fun! I was so good I could play it with my eyes closed and still beat the heck outta the computer.
Since my parents couldn't afford a Gameboy for me these were all I had in terms of handheld gaming. I only enjoyed them because they were better than nothing. Even under these circumstances, I seen them more as an addition to my collections of merchandise.
I picked up a bunch of these cheap at the Portland retro gaming festival a few years ago. Growing up I had the Double Dragon one. Never could beat it though
I had a ton of these, my favorite was American Gladiators. I really enjoy these vids that you do on stuff we grew up on, 34 going on 35 here, totally relate. Thanks for the Awesome vids.
I had the American Gladiators and Mortal Kombat ones. I remember always just being confused at how to play them; sometimes they would work and sometimes not.
I had a Black Jack one. Not sure if it was made by Tiger though. I really don't remember. But that was the only one I enjoyed more than 5 minutes compared to others.
Yup 5 or 10 minutes of fun, then you put it away for a few days or weeks, then take it back out for 5 or 10 more minutes of fun! They were lame but still were enjoyable and I have a lot of nostalgia for them. Plus they are cool to collect if anything!
Talkboy! pumped some nostalgia right into my eyes there Jay, I had that in the UK, not sure if it was the same company exporting there but the design was exactly the same. I love how I used to use that kind of stuff and imagine I was James Bond or in Mission Impossible, trying to make my own portable "coms-system" from cardboard and rubbish... now every kid has a smart phone and everything I dreamed of as a child is lame in comparison... but who's the childhood winner?
i used to have an old ninja turtle hand held game my uncle gave me back in the day, while yes there not great but i remember having a lot of fun with that one. great vid
I had a racing one that wasn't bad. Certainly wasn't a Game Boy but for something so cheap it held my interest for 10-15 minutes every now and then if I was bored in the car.
Same, and my mother always made sure there was at least one or 2 in the car in case I forgot my GameGear as she knew it would shut me up for at least a few minutes.
I still remember these things. My cousin used to let me play his when I went over to his house. they were shit compared to my Game Boy at the time. they're a fucking nostalgia trip though. Good times. very informative video, Jay! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
ladynikkie As did I. Also Double Dragon. I was 8 or so at the time and I remember liking them to a degree. Of course Gameboy was better, but these felt like an extension to well known franchises I came to love via the NES.
I actually really loved those things I think the experience was different for us I was born in 82 and I can tell you to this day john Elway was the Shyt Bro!!
avgn painted them in a more bad light highlighting the suck factor this highlights the good side of these either way these things were a big part of childhood till i got a gameboy
They were cross promoting the IP's. A bunch of R-zone games were Saturn titles (Daytona, Panzer Dragoon, Nights, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter). So they showed their Saturn counterparts footage to draw some hype between the two even though they were obviously complete different.
Yeah back when I found portable entertainment with a solar calculator spelling boobs and hell these were fun :) The one I remember the most was Karate Champ the one Okchief got in suns out guns out (Game Chasers)
I remember these, I had # of them from my grandmother mainly the Radio Shack ones at first because they where cheaper, and I would get them as random gifts from her, or my grandfather, then later on the Konami ones as they where cheaper then the Tigers ones, and the TMNT, Contra, and Top Gun games where at least playable, however I remember that Sonic 2 game being a big POS, along with most of the other Tiger LCD games, and please for the love of GOD don't get me started on how bad the R-Zone was, I got that for Christmas the year it came out from my step mother at the time, and I was so pissed off at how shitty it was.
Dude reads the script like they're waiting for him in the car outside. But yeah one of my friends had what I think was an Area 51 LCD game that came with a little gun for you to shoot the aliens.
I still have a few of these but the ones I remember most from when I was a kid was the Simon's Quest, Double Dragon, and Mega Man 2 handhelds. I really don't see why Game Sack doesn't have like 3 videos dedicated to these yet.
I'm loving all this new content on your channel jay.
Every Christmas, got a new Tiger Electronics handheld. Man, I wish I kept more of them.
I grew up surrounded by video games but I still rather enjoyed the novelty of games like this every so often. I remember getting Sonic 1 Sonic 3 and Dragon Ball Z tiger electronics. To sum it up simply, it was all we had.
Since my parents couldn't afford a Gameboy for me these were all I had in terms of handheld gaming. I only enjoyed them because they were better than nothing. Even under these circumstances, I seen them more as an addition to my collections of merchandise.

I played a couple of these back in my day. they're fun for what they are but only for a few minutes at a time.
I'm sure they are fun to collect now.
I had a ton of these, my favorite was American Gladiators. I really enjoy these vids that you do on stuff we grew up on, 34 going on 35 here, totally relate. Thanks for the Awesome vids.

I remember back in grade school my principle had a desk drawer full of those tiger handheld games.
Man, I had the 2-XL, loved that robot
Outrun was not too bad. I enjoyed it
I remember having one for DuckTales.... it just wasn't as good as the real deal.
And let's not ever forget about the GAME COM system as well!
I never had better growing up so I loved these things! Street Fighter II was probably the best I had.
I still remember these things. My cousin used to let me play his when I went over to his house. they were shit compared to my Game Boy at the time. they're a fucking nostalgia trip though. Good times. very informative video, Jay! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I had a Tiger handheld as a kid it was around Christmas of 1992 I had the Ninja Gaiden one.
ladynikkie As did I. Also Double Dragon. I was 8 or so at the time and I remember liking them to a degree. Of course Gameboy was better, but these felt like an extension to well known franchises I came to love via the NES.
blues713317 yep. and I went through a lot of batteries on these lol
My first system bought with Christmas money was gba. Fondest memories were with the gb pocket
I had a Sonic the Hedgehog one that I loved because I didn't have a Genesis at the time. I'm a SNES fanboy.
I actually really loved those things I think the experience was different for us I was born in 82 and I can tell you to this day john Elway was the Shyt Bro!!

shadowtheoblivious theese things are horrible plastic waisted just because you grew up with them doesn't meen they're good
I had the R Zone, only thing I remember about it is that it was an instant migraine.
I'm confused.... Why is it that in the R-Zone commercial they're showing Sega Saturn footage?
They were cross promoting the IP's. A bunch of R-zone games were Saturn titles (Daytona, Panzer Dragoon, Nights, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter). So they showed their Saturn counterparts footage to draw some hype between the two even though they were obviously complete different.
So many memories of Lion King tiger electronic
That beat was 🔥🔥🔥
Till today i never heard of these Tiger Electronics LCD games
They are very interesting i must say (for retro-gamers of course)
I remember beating the Mega Man 2 one!!!!!!! It's one of my crowning achievements as a kid.
Draken Dear Lord how many times did the game make you start from beginning all over again.
I had Karnov game and thought it decent but not as good as NES also had DK JR Game and Watch and those were frickin awesome plz do a vid on em.
W0W dude , what a classic
I had a bunch of those pieces of shit, lol! Can't believe they were actually a form of entertainment!
Shame on you, Tiger, for ruining video games
Saved us on the bus rides.
Kuronji HBK 👍
For sure, and they where much easier to fit into a pocket then my GameGear lol!
The Terminator handheld was a decent one.
Yeah back when I found portable entertainment with a solar calculator spelling boobs and hell these were fun :)
The one I remember the most was Karate Champ the one Okchief got in suns out guns out (Game Chasers)

There was a mother fucking Marble Madness one? To eBay!
Dude reads the script like they're waiting for him in the car outside.
But yeah one of my friends had what I think was an Area 51 LCD game that came with a little gun for you to shoot the aliens.
I wanted the nintendo donkey kong one that u could flip and close it i was in elementary school when it came out or maybe it was out already
I had Double Dragon.
Gauntlet was pretty decent
Chode
I think it has a lot a do with imagination as well the deeper you can zone out the better those cheesy graphics become
I hated those Tiger LCD hand held games, they were such junk. Pretty much every one was the same with a different LCD image.
These things are fuck. I had several in my childhood, but once the Gameboy came along, I never touched them again.
OMG I REMEMBER THE R ZONE HAHA
The Shady Gay Show
I grew up with them but I never enjoyed playing them to boring
I feel you are spitting out information a little too fast. You should slow down a little.
I hated these, good nostalgia tho. I had the double dragon ones and a turtles one.
Tiger handhelds were trash. I have those bleep noises seared into my brain
I had more fun playing with sticks and rocks than these abominations. But the licensing is what sold them to kids.
i am fan of them i have lots
I never knew they had a G.I.Joe one. I'm going to have to track it down and add it to my collection.
I had a mortal kombat version. Yeah pretty terrible.
:(
Oh yeah, the tiger electronics games were just as shite in the UK. Couldn't stand anywhere near the game boy
tiger electronic handhelds sucked
