2023 Update: What's The Latest With The Boeing 777X?

  • Over three years after its first flight, and first delivery target, the Boeing 777X still finds itself in the certification process. Boeing's latest widebody has been hit with delays due to COVID but it hasn’t stopped there. Engine troubles and extra regulator scrutiny have also been factors in pushing back the first delivery by roughly five years. However, the planemaker has been busy in recent months, restarting tests and even booking new customers. Here's the latest on the 777X in 2023.

I think the fact that the FAA are being so strict on certain aspects of the 777X development means that Boeing have to get it right. This could lead it to being a long-term long haul wide body work horse for decades to come, like the 737 has been for short to medium haul narrow bodies for the last few decades. There is an honesty about the CEO not receiving a bonus. Irish bankers got bonuses they didn't deserve at the height of austerity after the financial crisis a decade and a half ago.

If Boeing hasn't provided enough information to the FAA to demonstrate the safety of their jet, it raises doubts about whether other countries' aviation regulators would want this aircraft in their skies.

Boeing is behind with the 777X. Fact not a feeling. Can't change that.
By the time first deliveries start (tentatively in 2025), those GE engines you love to emphasize in the video are at least half a technology generation behind, depending on how fast Rolls-Royce works. Boeing would do better pressing newer engine technology to power this overly heavy structure NOW (as compared to A350-1k or the A350neo already being discussed) also perhaps investing into bringing down structural weight NOW instead of later in its production life. Prices for every new technology item are going to rise. By not having brought the X out on its original timeline I suspect you'll have the MD-11 debacle all over with countless "Performance Improvement Packages" still not leading to all the hopes the manufacturer and Airlines are placing into it. (For crying out loud you took over soooo many McDonnell-Douglas Team members!!! - you should know better!)
Engine technology advances and structural basic wight vs. payload weight efficiency killed prospective late customers for the A380 down to very few specialized applications (ANA's 3 turtles!) and EK's pleading the 380neo leads in the wrong direction... The World, not just EK will need more like an A380NG-neo by 2030... Thanks Mr. Clark for continuing to pursue the issue! Otherwise the 777X is just the "biggest we have"... and not the "quantum leap" suggested to the public...
Airports will become much more slot constrained by the end of the 2020s and it doesn't look like there is a "new Heathrow" even in discussion anywhere in Europe, much less in the USA. All NIMBY - "not in my back yard". Yet we all want (need) state of the art airport infrastructure - is having countless specialized airports (LHR/LGW/LCY/STN/LTN etc. or JFK/LGA/EWR/TEB/FRG/ISP/HVN et al conducive to NIMBY - I bet not!) DWC is prob the largest future-oriented capacity airport in the foreseeable future. I wonder if it will replace DXB or just "enhance"... Sad to consider ATL falling behind on a worldwide scale in that they are still not considering joining an A380 grade infrastructure.
It is symptomatic of our time (the "Zeitgeist") that every individual has to work harder than in the 1960s/1970s "boom times" yet everything else is moving slower (little road construction, crumbling infrastructure, speed limits, little wage growth despite ongoing productivity gains!) and we "trip over the pennies to miss the dollars" - it's a cultural thing - work 'til you drop out of frustration or for health issues. "Socialism" being the hate word in North America. Little health insurance (what you can buy misses the mark completely) and no personal time (vacation) - in Europe things are a little different.
Cost control is not the only gauge for progress. Real innovation thrives when cost control is temporarily a second consideration - you tweak for efficiency as something new matures once it's on line.
There are too few visionaries in the current era (maybe Elon Musk?) - Boeing certainly isn't by re-hashing "proven designs" simply for "shareholder value". You also cannot create "excitement" without defining a new Goal - maybe on a national level. White House leaders failed here.
Industries need to re-think their approach to "continuous growth aka planned obsolescence" and tolerance to competition. Competition exposes "the right way" and bribing Governments just makes this realization take longer.

    • @rafaelwilks
      @rafaelwilks 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, depending on how fast RR works. Considering GE's been delivering various upgrades to the GEnx over the years, it won't be surprising in the least if they deliver further upgrades to the GE9X. RR, meanwhile, hasn't yet managed to find any solid application of their latest technology, and they'll probably end up having to play catch-up with GE's advances.

For it hit EIS in 2025 is completely unacceptable. The core of Boeing has been carved out, they can clearly no longer execute. The old planes, pre 787 were not delayed anything like this. It really does not matter though, because right now there is just the Boeing-Airbus duopoly. Without competition to set things straight, things will continue to stagnate.

The 777-8 is a waste of time. Airlines either want capacity for thick routes or they want range for long and thin ones. Generally they don't need both except for a few routes that aren't worth a dedicated variant.
    --
Instead, Boeing should revise the 787-8 that nobody's buying anymore and give it another 1500nm of range for a total of 8800nm. This can be done by upping maximum takeoff weight 27 tons to equal that of the 787-9 and -10 using the same wing box, tail and gear as these variants instead of the -8's less optimal, earlier, design. 1500nm is about right with 27 tons of extra fuel.

Boeing is paying its CEO millions of dollars, but when it comes to union workers' pay, they make a U turn. If a worker joins boeing and stays in the same grade job, he/she gets top pay after 6 years (12 progressions) , and if that worker moves to a higher grade job within first 6 years, their progression starts all over again which is 0. That's how they make the workers suffer, and yet Dave Calhoun and Stanley Deal make millions.

Thanks for sharing this exciting news indeed. One can think about Kirchhoff's law in terms of energy conservation. A body that is absorbing energy and yet remains in thermal equilibrium must be releasing that equivalent energy.
A solar panel is already "breaking" the law since the panel is able to absorb the energy, remain in thermal equilibrium and yet emit less radiation as the missing energy is flowing out as electrons.
This research is similar to other concept of layering solar panels with photoelectric materials that work at different wavelengths of light, enabling more energy conversion.

I count engineering friends that were born and trained in Japan, UK, Italy, Germany, Scotland, Turkey, China, Spain, Israel, Cote d'Ivoire, Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Mozambique, Haiti, Iraq, Iran, Australia, and New Zealand, and I'm probably missing a few here. And I really have seen no difference between men and women engineers that I have worked side-by-side with, have worked for me, or who I have reported to. Boeing's problems are 100% tied to poor executive decisions like an unworkable 787 schedule, abysmal supplier management, playing politics with safety, and a bit of bad luck.

The incoming B777 is already a commercial failure. Small amount of forward sales compared to the cost of development. And the reason for the delays are outright scary: structural failures, engine failures: you name it. The A350 is walking away with orders and the B777 will be almost a generation older by the time it eventually comes out, Airbus already having moved on.

    • @lorenjackson8961

"The incoming B777 is already a commercial failure?" You don't know what the total number built will be for the life of this aircraft. Now...if you really want to talk about commercial failures....take a look at the Airbus A380. Airbus said the absolute break-even point for profits on that aircraft was 420 aircraft. They never came close to that number building only 251 aircraft before shutting down.
