I wouldn't say they "Lose" money. I mean they have ads, and don't forget about the subscribers that pay for no ads. There would be no spotify if they didn't make money, they just don't make all that much.
The bottom line is the new model pays the artists very little while the tech companies make millions from the artist's work. So basically, it's the same thing as the old days where the label made all the money. Meet the new boss, same as the old.
it's not like any world artist today isn't making money, they lose some and win some. Artists biggest revenue comes from Live concerts nowadays and they are still bathing in money. Free music only helps their cause, because more people hear it and making more potential concert goers
