      I drive a very expensive and very powerful Audi. I pride myself on being a competant driver who is very considerate to other drivers.
      I guess you do not drive a very expensive and powerful car, but just choose to project your own failings onto others.
      Of course I am just an Audi driver so my opinion does not matter.

      Stopping in the slip road is fatal accident waiting to happen. If you do as instructed here 99% of the time you will enter lane 1 safely and those seeing you will appreciate the confident approach as they are not left guessing and start to change speeds or direction and cause safety issues. The 1% it doesn’t fall that way keep the speed up into the hard shoulder and into a suitable gap asap. Stopping is fatal

    An important system that’s executed so poorly by so many people. I think people would benefit from an extended version of this video. Along the lines of:
    Mirror, near side mirror, signal, deep right shoulder check, identify gap, speed correct, gear correct, mirror, offside mirror and into lane 1.
    I feel a lot of people race down the slip and hope there’s a gap!

  • @HarmonicaMustang
    @HarmonicaMustang ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Also don't focus on your speedo. Look for gaps as soon as you can (if crossing the motorway via a bridge before joining the sliproad, you can take a glance over the railings to judge traffic levels).
    I was nervous about that HGV for a while. I would have slowed down somewhat and joined behind him. A few seconds lost, but it saves you the stress and likely speeding to get ahead of them. Remember: HGVs will not stop quickly, so you should help them by leaving them a 2 second gap behind you (in dry conditions. Double it in wet). If you join right in front a HGV, and all of a sudden you need to brake hard because you were focusing on your speedo instead of what's on the road, you have not given that HGV the space he needs, putting yourself in danger. Give yourself options, join in behind the HGV, assess the situation, and then go for the overtake.

  • @DrRusty5
    @DrRusty5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would add, make the decision to join ahead or behind an approaching vehicle (especially slower ones) in lane 1 and then stick to that decision. If in the video above the lorry was just a little further ahead it might have been necessary to adjust the speed to join a safe distance behind it rather than end up racing up to the end of the slip road and pulling out in front of it or forcing it to move out to lane 2. If you time it right and traffic is clear you will be able to overtake the lorry safely with little to no delay.

    It's remarkable how many people go side by side with HGVs that are on the main carriageway and wonder what's going to happen next.
    I had someone in front of me, where there's a very long extended sliproad going from the M65 to the M61 North, brake hard to join between two slow lorries when he had plenty of opportunities to get safely ahead of both lorries and join.

    Speed adjustment to pace and join this is correct but also remember the slip road is a minor road with the broken line at the end being a junction to the carriage way or main road. The high code states a main road has priority over a minor road, so if you can not join you stop until you can or as someone has mentioned utilise the hard shoulder until you can.

    We have a couple of slip roads locally that are very short indeed, one's on a bend and one's on the brow of a hill, it's crazy to get your speed up before you know if there's a gap to accelerate into. Likewise if I'm approaching these sliproads on the duel carriageway I make sure I'm in the outside lane just in case a vehicle tries to force his way onto lane one doing a silly slow speed. It can feel quite daunting joining a motorway for the first time, but so long as you match the speed of the traffic in good time, i can guarantee you will be able to find a gap without any of the main traffic having to move for you.

    Bad advice! There is no need to join at that speed and so close to the slip road end. Joining at the end leaves you with no alternatives. I would have joined behind the lorry. Speed matched but much safer. You should have added that the dashed line of the slip road means "give way" and you should be prepared to come to a complete halt on the slip road if it not safe to join. Difficult to do at that excessive speed. YOU have to give way to traffic already on the motorway!

    For most cars it's a lot easier to brake than accelerate. Go fast and tap brakes gently to slip into a space instead of trying to accelerate into it.

    Tjis is why having a quicker car is safer. A quick car can get you out of situations in a safer manner.

    I nearly hit the back of a car on the slip road that stopped while I was looking at approaching cars. He then waited for a long gap and set off quite slowly onto the motorway.

      The worst offenders for inappropriate middle lane hugging are, in my observations, middle aged.

    What happened to the acceleration lane that follows the slip road?

    Nothing worse than being stuck behind a slow driver on a motorway slip road, so so dangerous. I had so many near misses in my first car, Fiat Punto, it didn't have the power to speed up after getting out of the way of the slow drivers. Not a problem now with my S4, people often ask why I'd want such a powerful car, well I can tell you, it makes situations like those a lot easier to handle!

    LOL Do Italy! Now slow to 40kph to join the 90-110kph traffic on the motorway.

    What if there's no suitable gap and you're at speed and the slip road is ending?

    Remember if you are in a very busy lane 1 and there is a good amount of traffic coming down the slip road. Move over to lane 2 if its safe. Helps keep the flow of traffic 😊

    And that's how to merge from a slip road on a motorway correctly, it's a pity too many drivers do it wrong, and make the merge dangerous by forcing other vehicles to either brake or change lanes suddenly to avoid a collision.
